Kazuki Takahashi (Yu-Gi-Oh creator) passes away at 60

His body equipped with snorkeling gear was found off the coast of Nago, Okinawa.

As a big fan of his work, words can't describe how I feel about this sudden loss.

RIP Mr. Takahashi. May the gods rest your soul like you did to Atem's 💐🙏

I read on other news; by injury in his stomach it suspected to be attack by shark, or other marine animals.

That's unfortunate. RIP Takahashi-sensei.

Yu-Gi-Oh always got special place in my heart.
I'm not sure how to put it, but as time goes I love how it initially started as Phantom Blood bootleg, to various idea of toys, ended with Ancient Egypt children card games lead to epic coming of age finale. That's something you won't be able to find in other manga and you can easily see its influence to every other Japan toys in future. Bakugan's monster world and antagonist, Beyblade history lesson even the meek-protagonist with high-and-mighty rival format in his assistant works that also became one of known card games, Cardfight Vanguard.

It also amazing how this franchise goes for years. Not only the charm is relatively consistent from Yugi/Atem to Judai, Yusei, Yuma, Yuya, Playmaker now Yuga (SEVENS) and Yusa (OCG Structure) but also how the game expand it inner world from stories of Marauding Captain to thick old RPG stories of Albaz, Ecclesia and Tri-Brigade even with minimal supervisor from Takahashi; an achievement on its own league.

Thank you for all your hard works.

Perhaps drowning, and then eaten by sharks after death? More information will come out later, I guess

Horrible news for me since Yugioh manga was really popular during the time I was in elementary school. It practically one among the earliest manga available to me at that time. May his soul rest in peace.

It's extremely unlikely for it's to be a shark attack though, it's definitely more like he as some accidents during snorkeling, and the shark bite him after death, Shark is known to be scavengers as well as predator, but Shark generally avoid attacking animal or fish that is on the bigger size. Their prefered target are smaller school of fishes. Generally even big sharks like great whites attack humans more out of confusion and wariness, the same reason why they attack sea lions, who is actually more on their size and rarely appear before them. If the person was constantly moving, the shark is likely avoiding them unless they are really close. Given that he was snorkeling, it's more likely that the area he was snorkeling in definitely was clear and having warning if sharks is near. So it more like he has some accident in water, and having accidents, even minor one, in the sea is really dangerous, and the shark just bite him way after.

This sucks and 2021-2022 has been a terrible era for untimely manga-ka deaths like what the hell?

Dang. I'm not the biggest Yu-Gi-Oh fan, but I do remember watching it every week on TV when I was younger and liking it a lot. RIP.

No doubt his contribution to anime was pretty huge since the franchise is still on-going.

Yugioh was a good part of my childhood and I remember getting up every Saturday morning to watch it and collecting cards.

RIP Takahashi sensei.

I grew up watching Yu-Gi-Oh and playing the game. It was a big part of my childhood. This is such a tragedy.

Rest in peace.

Takahashi was an outspoken critic of Abe, ironically. It’s vey rare in Japan for celebrities to openly criticize right-wing politicians like Abe - I very much appreciated that Takahashi didn’t give a fuck.

That's really sad to hear

I didn't post here in the first time because I didn't want to believe it. Thank you Mr. Takahashi for everything. He still has "the courage in the kindness" (Atem said that toward Yugi in the last battle against Yugi) in him until the very end

Whoever he helped saving, I hope they get the message he passed and make the best of the gift he left them. And tries to make the world a better place at their scale.

The sad thing is that he didn't actually help anyone though. He tried to, and tragically ended up being the only victim, with the people he attempted to save being rescued by someone else and him being unnoticed by any of them.

This gives very mixed feelings. He did something very brave... and was rewarded with a pointless death. It's so unfair.

It's sad, but that's the brutal truth of drowning incidents like that. If you aren't specifically trained for it, it's best to stay out of it or you could end up becoming another victim.

In hindsight, the changing of studio for YGO anime after Vrains is like a foreshadowing.

That's coz starting from Sevens & its sequel, the YGO anime no-longer has thick Kazuki Takahashi-esque characters. They look more standard like the ones you see from Bakugan, Beyblade or Vanguard. Who knew that Vrains really marked the end of an era, leading up to Sevens & Go-Rush for the next generations without Takahashi.

Anyway, all the facts around his death only stressed that the whole situation is a complete tragedy and we lost a good human being & a great talent.

Yes, this is sadly the real takeaway here. By going into the water in a situation like that an untrained person is much more likely to create another necessary rescue - themselves - than help anyone. The most likely scenario is that a trained rescuer has to endanger their own life to try and save the untrained one.

A lot of places are calling him a hero. If nothing else, it's good PR.

Meanwhile, how's that saying about a fine line between bravery and stupidity go? I feel like this ends up on the stupidity side. I'm not saying it isn't tragic; I'm just saying that he died while accomplishing nothing.
