Spice and Wolf Light Novel Discussion

No, it really isn't hard to define what a spoiler is. If the light novels were a subforum and we could have separate threads for each chapter or volume, it'd be easier to handle.

But you can't assume that everyone who walks into a single threaded discussion has read as far as you. Therefore, all that is needed is a spoiler enclosure titled with something like "only for those who've read past chapter 3" or "volume 4 spoilers". Not hard....

The Spoiler Policy for the forum is pretty easy to transmogrify for light novels and manga -- and it really helps with titles limited to a single thread.

Sorry....my spoiler was really more of a joke on the label, not the content.....^_^

But yeah, I think actually having a novel forum, with sublinks for chapters/volumes would be a great idea....but I do kind of like how we can post everything together under "Translation" and "Discussion." I think it keeps us together a bit more, even if it makes the project a bit more unorganized....But anyway we should at least properly label spoilers. Understood ^_^

Well, that was a moving little speech from Mark, wasn't it? Although I seem to have gotten a bit lost. So, exactly what is Horo to Lawrence again? And what was with that "It'll all depend upon your performance"? I can't decide if that's ominous, or just Mark implying ...er.... something. Or both. Gah, can't we just finish this plot arc?! The lack of Horo is driving me nuts!

well about the the "depends on performance".. The most logical explanation would be that despite how this "race" between Lawrence and Amati ends, whether Horo will continue with Lawrence or not depends on the things Lawrence will say and do..
About what Horo is to Lawrence.. Hope he actually tells her it in person in the last chapter.. then we'll see his performance at least ^_^

This volume is still very interesting with no dissappointments ^_^

The "performance" could be about Lawrence making the price crash. Even with the pyrite he's hastily bought, he may have to use his merchant and acting skills a bit.

well maybe.. but if we consider that they were talking about the relationship between Horo and lawrence (in general terms, but still it was about them), and since Mark pointed that Lawrence has a special relationship to Horo, then his words mostly must have meant that he must think more of what he should do with Horo..

Spoiler for Volume 3, Chapter 4:

Yeah I assumed the performance all had to do with what Lawrence would say to Horo. Stopping the paying of the debt is the big thing, but that's not all that has to be dealt with. Through his mad dash he's been doing Lawrence has really gotten a chance to describe Horo. As an important piece of cargo that he'll take any risk to get back on the cart. Not to mention its become clear how important her presence is in his life. She's changed him and it seems for the better.

A little late, but the good news is he has the answer to what Horo is to him. Can see the reason why he had such trouble with the question. If he lived by the belief that something grat had to be obtained through a difficult process, what is Horo that ended up with him by chance? Sadly not having a firm grasp on what he thought about her helped to cause a major problem here.

Mark really is a great guy. Managed to help Lawrence get some pyrite. Though will really help if Deanna can get him access to some.

Will be nice to see Horo again though. Good luck Lawrence.

Really is going to be one heck of a chapter. Looking forward to it.

well, i think there would some thing like a romantic make up, which will suddenly be interrupted by Horo's sarcastic remarks or teasing or smth in the art, since she is a wise and proud wolf, I doubt she will be sentimental for very long ^_^

Yeah...not too much, but hey, what about that little boy you know?

He has a little bit of wanting to be a knight in him...reminds me a bit of Amati. Does make you wonder though, he seems so dependable and stuff...could someone like that turn out to be the kind of knight that Lawrence first met in Volume 1? Where he was sort of rude, pretending everyone should know him...etc. When Volume 3 specifically says he's not used to people knowing his name...^_^ You think this lad will become a knight? Traveling Merchant? Wheat Vendor, etc?

Some speculation regarding Spice and Wolf's (eventual) end

Does anyone else feel that Spice and Wolf is building up towards a bittersweet parting between Horo and Lawrence?

Spoiler for Contains dramatic developments beyond Vol 3 which you might not want to know:

They both like each another (Lawrence finally admits it at the end of Vol 5, and I think it's strongly implied by Horo in one of the side-stories of Vol 7) ... but seem resigned to the fact that "no journey comes without an end". Horo, despite her flirting, seems fearful of becoming too close to Lawrence (probably because she has been hurt in the past as a result of her extended lifespan ).

Much as I would like them to live happily ever after, I see them "parting with smiles" at the end of the series

Any thoughts on this?

Luckily I only read what happens at the end of Volume 5....but that coupled with your earlier observation....waaaaaaaaaa

Then again....how could a Wolf Diety that can live for ages, and a human, who's life passes by so quickly...ever be together.....the only thing I can hope for is:

1) Lawrence finds a way to become immortal ^_^
2) Horo finds a way to give up her longevity

There is of course the possibility of them being together...who knows....but if so....I can't even begin to imagine the sadness Horo would go through after Lawrence dies of old age...I can't even begin to grasp it....perhaps the best answer is simply that in the end, they will somehow part...Lawrence's story being told for generation upon generation by Horo....

I hate to admit it, but the only way I see the story ending is through their permanent separation, or at least them never becoming a "couple."

That's how Miyazaki ended "Princess Mononoke" anyway...In the end, it was a heartfelt ending, but San said she could never trust humans, which was her rejection of Ashitaka, then Ashitaka pretty much said then "okay" but he'll visit occasionally to say hello....I hope that's not what we get from Spice and Wolf ^_^

I really want them to be able to live on the same time-frame, living their life together.....
