Started working through this game today and oh my god, the music is fantastic. Played very much like an active turn based isometric RPG somewhat akin to Final Fantasy ATB battle system that allows you to queue up combos during your activated turn but still allows manual attacks in real time combat.
While there isn't any equipment setup like traditional RPGs, the skill system is very robust that allow tons of mix and match. Each skill can be either set as an active skill, coupled to another skill as enhancement or used as an passive buff. With 4 active skill slot each with 2 possible enhancement slot and 4 passive buff slot, there's tons of combination you can use to customize your playstyle. Really enjoyed my time with it so far with both gameplay and story so far. There's just enough mystery to the narrative to keep me pushing forward without being too obtuse and I looked forward to every level my character gained since it opens up new playing options with skill options and customization rather than the typical RPG stat gain.

^It's not, you have to run a New Game+ to get to max level (at which point you'll end up getting a copy of every function... so you can do a combination of Jaunt + Jaunt, for example).
I completed the game about two days ago and it was simply a beautiful experience. It's shorter than Bastion, if I'm remembering the length of the latter game correctly (and that's with the inclusion all of the side challenges and whatnot in both games), but I have mixed feelings about whether I think that's a bad thing or not. Had it gone on for twice as long, it might've overstayed its welcome. I started a NG+ mainly to complete all of the Function Files so I could read some more lore about the characters (and to boost my achievement score). With the Process becoming more difficult and more numerous (and that is with or without limiters, mind you) and higher amount of functions/memory available to you, the combat system opens up and gets a little more robust than before. I'm enjoying it a lot. Also, just... Dat soundtrack. Get it if you don't already have it. Seriously.

As a big fan of Bastion... was not disappointed. The art is beautiful, the music is beautiful, the story is beautiful. A work of art, tbh, with enjoyable gameplay.
Currently roughly halfway through NG+... which is providing a far bigger challenge with several limiters activated. I never got a Game Over in my first run. Haven't gotten one in NG+ yet, but it's close sometimes...

Just finished my first run through of the game, it's about 8 hr or so. While you can extend the game time further with new game+, i think the best part of Transistor lies in your first playthrough unravelling the story and experiencing the soundtrack for the first time.
Not to say the gameplay mechanic isn't good, but it does lack variety by focusing their effort solely on the skill system. Granted they could have easily just extend the gameplay length just by adding regular RPG element but on the flip side, the story maintain a brisk pace that kept my interest high throughout the game. However, I wish there's more boss battles to punctuate the story better. Out of the 8 hrs, there's probably only 3 encounter that felt boss-like to me. Personally, i had a lot of fun just going through the story and fiddling around with the skill system however, for folks that are tight on budget, $20 might be a bit too high for the length of the game. Whether you want to buy it now or later @ a discounted price, it's definitely a game you want to play and experience atleast once for both the story and music.
