Well, you may remember Ophélie Winter back to the 90's when she sang how God gave her the Faith. Diam's made that kinf of twist, but with Islam this time. Actually she got married, converted herself to Islam and "found a new spiritual path".

lots of different things here. I won't argue with anyone but...
I could not say French make bad music - I saw les Wampas live last week and it definitely rocked in a real "punk" way - but the people mentioned here are much about lousy "variétés", which is not music, but money making, to me, and I think it gives a very bad idea of what France really is, musically speaking. Sorry.
Maybe I'm just fed up with that meaningless "french touch" thing.

I am not too fond of contemporary french music ...

I hate hip hop and I am not much into electronic music which seems to be the only genres where french artists stand out. I love Air though.
There aren't many great french rock bands, but I am a fan of Noir Désir and like Dyonisos and Eiffel a lot. I am also into songwriters like Miossec, Delerm, Thiefaine or Katerine, Renaud and the Ancients (Brassens, Ferré, Brel)

The song I am listening all the time currently : Dionysos covering good old Leo Ferré
