Well she certainly channeled Disney's Snow White in the Sheryl manga.

Yeah...again, it's kind of a shame, I think. The art in the Sheryl comic is REALLY DAMN GOOD, I think...if only the story were better...

It's definitely got me interested to check out the artist's other works, though. Same with Kikuya Megane, whose Nyan Dra comics are also quite lovely.

Well, it's a parody of the typical Disney princess.

IIRC, Yot-chan said a couple of times that the TV series ending was Yoshino's idea and not Kawamori's idea. While there was no outspoken resolution (due to Alto's fail self-awareness), wasn't Yoshino the one who said episode 24 scene was about Alto's feelings for Sheryl?

If we take the TV series as his vision... the balance tips at one side.

I have to wonder what kind of ending did Kawamori want:

Edit: FORGET THAT. I read that as AxS.

...You know that the girls will have to tour and Alto would probably want to remain behind in his open sky. It gets lonely.

Well, I wonder if people in Japan will still want to have a proper conclusion to the series and will nag Kawamori for an OVA. ^^

I think the manga it is different ..., the manga is some sweet romance ending for people who want that kind of happy ending...

If we don't like the movie ending... We should forget it and consider the manga as the true ending...

Kawamori want everyone to be happy with their own choice of ending

In movie, novel, and manga (tv is not count)

Execept he will make an OVA... Maybe all ending will be same after all

That could work. An added episode 26 OVA, that's been done before by series such as Oreimo or Clannad. In fact they could do two, a Ranka and a Sheryl route like in visual novels.

Wouldn't make a difference for the continuity either, as at the end of the TV-series the main characters have completed their roles in the events of Frontier. Who ends up with who is trivial assuming future Macross shows will star a new cast anyway.

Huh? It is not trivial in Macross, because the love triangle is the most important aspect in the story, not the subplot. The war plot, mecha and music are actually in fact the subplots. Didn't Kawamori said so? Also it's not about the fate of who marries who but

Spoiler for spoilers for the movie:

The love triangle is essential to the overall storyline of Frontier, that's true, but it's resolution is not. At least not in the TV-series. The pivotal moment in the series is in ep 25 when the three way friendship/romance of Ranka, Alto and Sheryl expressed in song makes the Vaijra understand humans thereby turn around the battle and end the conflict. The final scene on the planet is just aftermath.

Frontiers last episodes set up a brilliant inversion of the DYRL finale. I find it quite grating that shippers often ignore that, so they can complain about Kawamori not letting their girl win Alto's heart. As if it's a random harem comedy. Ah well, rant mode off...

Anyway Macross has always been about three things: Valkyries, romance, and conflict resolution through music/songs. All three are needed to make it a true Macross show.

Um. I agree, however, Word of God (Kawamori himself) said Macross should depict a "love triangle against the backdrop of great battles".

Resolution IS part of any good storytelling.

Would it be good storytelling if the plot was about the war and the series depicted what started it, how it executed it and then we see the ending credits before we know the outcome? No. Of course not. That's shoddy storytelling. It's obvious of why Kawamori wasn't pleased with Yoshino for leaving the triangle like that, when for him, Macross is a love story first.

The problem in the TV series was that there was NOT a resolution, not even OT3 as the phrase Alto said (you are both my wings) were not meant in a romantic sense.

It's like it ended with Frontier and the Vajyra staring at each others, still no certainty if there's ceasefire or they are at war. Had the focus be the battles (but it's not), would you think that's a proper ending?
