I feel really sorry for her. She's getting totally shunned. Perhaps because she is most distant from the 1st Division? Or is she really hiding a lot of her power? (I REALLY hope she's not as weak as it seems)...

Episode 8 Opinions and Thoughts

The first half was very funny. Right from the moment of revelation of what Mikoto was eating ( "Ramen of the Sun - very hot!" ) and getting the 'water, water' reaction, to her running everywhere and up pops the scene of Shiho knocking the octopi ( a funny sense of irony there with the octopus even settling down on her hair at the end ). The comedy at the fair sort of ends at the stage at what Natsuki calls Mai when she brought Mikoto back to the others ( "pet owner"

).

The second half deals more with the nature of the Child and HiME in the anime, as well as looking more into the romantic attachments of Mai. From the OP, it can be obvious that Mai's love lines are going to be cross with Tate's and Kanzaki's. However I think it is far more likely that she will be paired with Tate at the end. Check out their interactions and the manner in which she said "I made a promise to Shiho as well". Also they might be following the manga for the main romantic pairing.

My own anime speculation for the second half is that...

Nagi has a plan for the Childs. Childs are simply sealed up metaphysical power entities. Over the years, the bonds will break down and a Child might escape, assuming a physical shape. A HiME-less Child becomes an Orphan, going around doing things out of its own will. Now Nagi plans to bind HiMEs with the Childs, thereby preventing them from becoming Orphans and gathering them to keep down the population of Orphans. Of course, he does this with the help of Miss Shiro. For all we know, Nagi might be a Child himself.

The binding involves the twining of the lifeforce of the one 'most precious' to the HiME to the Child itself. When the Child is killed, it is equivalent to destroying the 'precious'. One wonders if the 'precious' of Mai would remain her brother or Tate at the end...

However, there is another organisation, SEARRS that desires to destroy all Childs, Orphans or not. They might have some involvement with Fuuka Academy or not. Their ultimate method to do so is the development of MIYU who is to gather data and learn how to kill Childs or Orphans herself. Thus it seems that a final showdown might be between SEARRS and Fuuka Academy.

What would be a fan's opinion of what distinguishes this from any other magical girl anime series? I mean, just as a question.

If anyone has high quality scans of Mai-Hime, send me a PM please. The only scans I've seen so far are small and really poor quality, which makes the kind hard to work with if you know what I mean....

It's much more action-oriented than your average magical-girl show. And there isn't any transformation scene (minus Midori... lol ).

In fact I never thought about MH as a magical girl show until your question, but much more as a kind of girls-only "Scryed", with lots of funs and interesting characters.

I mean, Mikoto for example... sure neko-girls are maybe a little overused, especially this season, but how could you not laught when she goes on rampage ? ^^

completely agree, I think Mai-HiME so far looks more or less a shounen hot blood fighting show, just replace the shounen part with shoujo

but then I guess maybe one can say that shows like Saint Seiya, Dragonball and Scryed are "magical boy shows"?

and as for the "magical girl" question, sure Mai hime looks like a mahou shoujo, but it's fulled with ecchi and it's by sunrise, so i woudn't put it under that genre. More like comedy, drama, romance, school, superpowers..

gawd i want to kill nagi...

There's absolutely nothing wrong with the plot development in Mai Hime. The story is told bit by bit, at a very nice pace.

But to answer your question - yes, MAJOR plot development in the second half of Ep8.

PS: Why do you want to kill Nagi? Did you watch ep8 yet? If anything, this episode proved that he is _not_ just a coldhearted smart aleck.

About it being like a magical girl show. Sure it has some elements that are similar but it adds enough more original parts and hardly following the "classic" rules of magical girl shows thus making it something of it's own.

You could also say it's like Digimon with the difference that the 'trainers' also participate in the fights.
For some reason I love the materializing scenes of the CHILDs, how it's done different for each of them. I really like when Kagutsuchi shows up. Then again, I loved the summons when I played FF7 ages ago, and I think they are somewhat similar. Heck, Kagutsuchi could've been taken from a FF game. Organic creature with mechanical parts in it like the two power generators.

It airs on six different channels, TV Tokyo was the first with it airing it on Thursdays.

Yep, I would tend to agree with you. Even ep 4 which some people said was the epitome of fan-service in anime wasn't much more than another "underwear robbery" episode in the grand tradition of Ranma's Happosai or City Hunter's Ryo Saeba.

Fan-service-wise, I am sure we all have seen worse. Far worse.

compared to all other mahou shojo shows (sailor moon, ojamajo doremi, nadja, lyrical nanoha), mai hime has LOTs more ecchi than those shows

but compared to shounen anime, it's normal

man i need mai hime 8 subbed...

The manga is different from the anime, Spoiler for Manga differences: Mainly the theme in the manga is more of a shounen harem genre through the eyes of Yuuichi whilst the anime is a shounen formula following the adventures of Mai. So far both are entertaining in their own rights. I like the way in that right off the start, the manga and anime started off differently and would not confuse anyone that they might be the same. They have their similarities and their differences. The crucial difference so far is of course the way a Child is summoned, which requires the HiME and the Key. The way this is handled also is of tactical concern in HiME combat. In the manga, the primary characteristic of the HiME is more tied with her Element. As such, Mikoto is clearly a HiME in the manga. In the anime however, we are led to believe the HiME is tied to both Element ( which they never talk about I believe ) and the Child. As such, for the anime it is harder to discern what Mikoto is. Other differences include the introductions of the characters and some of their relationships. Oh yes, Mai is not afraid of spiders as well in the manga.
