Well, Matt Smith wasn't my favorite doctor (only watched the new series), Christopher Eccleston was my favorite followed by David Tennant.

Still wishing for a female Doctor.

I like Smith - he's solidly in the middle of the pack for me, but I'm not disappointed. It seems as if the series was in a bit of a trough this year and it might not be bad to see a fresh face.

My hope - as it's been for a while - is that Moffat will go with an older actor this time around (though obviously it won't be John Hurt or anyone of his generation). The dynamic of a slightly more mature Doctor - both in terms of look and personality - can be a very good one.

I've felt recently that Matt Smith was a decent actor hidebound by lousy writing, and suspect he'll go on to do good things.

In the meantime we can expect massive speculation regarding his replacement and parts of the fanosphere going completely mental at the suggestion that the next Doctor might not fulfil the triple criteria of being a white British guy.

Feels a bit too soon like it did for David Tennant and Christopher Eccleston but I have faith in Moffat and his crew. This might not have been a fantastic season as a whole but it did have some good episodes. Got me on the edge of my seat a couple of times.

I hope that the creators aren't rushing this with showing the new Doctor, and I kinda hoped to see Matt Smith for at least 3 or 4 regular episodes...

I'm sad to see Matt leave since he's my favorite Doctor.

And who will be the 12th Doctor?

Younger? Older? Black? Asian? Female? Dalek?

To be fair, Smith's episode count is equal to Tennant's (save for the amount of specials). And while I would love for Smith to be in another season, it's probably for the best that the series hold off on presenting the next Doctor until he (or she...? ) gets an entire season to themselves, so we'll only get the final two Specials with Matt Smith.

I do hope that Clara gets to stick around for some of the next season, even if it is with a new Doctor.

I must say I really hope Clara moves on - she's been a disappointment to me. No chemistry with Smith at all, and her conspiracy plot was more a distraction than anything else.

I thoroughly disagree that she and Smith lacked chemistry. Whatever her incarnation she played off of and with Smith quite well. Good dialogue and nice emotion, sadly she only had 7 or so episode in which to play around, and that's not enough.

That being said, I completely agree that her mysterious origins turned out to be lackluster. She deserved an entire season and a better ending to her mystery...

I am going to have to agree with Enzo. I found this 1/2 a season to be a disappointment & I think that is in large part because I didn't feel anything from the Clara & 11 relationship.

But who knows maybe Clara will have better chemistry with 12.

As The Doctor said a lot of times "At least let it not be ginger".

Wasn't Colin Baker (the 6th Doctor) slightly ginger?

Some do, but mostly all the fans say that he's not. I didn't watch much of the original Doctor (but I've watched all 2005-present), so I don't know very much about the old Doctors.

Interestingly, Wil Wheaton seems to be telling people he knows who's been cast as Twelve, and has for weeks. Probably BS but Wheaton doesn't normally seem like the sort of guy to that that stuff out of his ass, and he is friends with Jon Barrowman so I suppose it's possible. He also may or may not have hinted that it's Chiwetel Ejiofor.

While I would love to see Chiwetel Ejiofor take the part of the Doctor (and I know he said he would do it just a few years ago), frankly it would be a step-down for the actor, especially if the upcoming 12 Years a Slave is as good as many hope it will be. Dr. Who simply wouldn't help his career currently. Similarly, fellow rumored potential candidates Martin Freeman, Ben Whishaw, Chris O’Dowd, David Morrissey, Tilda Swinton are also extreme long shots.

Russell Tovey is also still a front runner, and he would be a decent choice, though I find it unlikely that he would abandon Him & Her so easily (not that he can't do both, but he is obviously trying to distance himself from his sci-fi/fantasy past). The aforementioned Rupert Grint is also seemingly in contention, but I find it doubtful that he would tie himself down so to another franchise so easily (he is trying to show his dramatic range right now).

Of the names I've seen brought up, Andrew Scott would be a cool choice, as would Olivia Colman.

Widespread reports in the UK press that Rory Kinnear has been offered the role, though the Beeb is denying it. Major betting houses have suspended wagering.
