How exactly do they end it? Any insights into the characters minds during the last moments of the book? Is there, as in the anime, a slight moment of hesitation during the "sound world" sequence when Alto says to Sheryl "You are...." then looks at Ranka "Both of you are my wings!"?

I did this scene first, one of my fave scenes

and hmmm, now that I've translate this one, it is indeed better to translate it, than using my own words to describe it. I'd ruin it all if I made it in my own words

Spoiler for sheryl's thoughts:

Hiding her delight, the young girl set her face as a woman and cooly said that. She knows she'd cry if she didnt do that.
The intensity at the backstage, are the same like that of military. The spacy room was given to Sheryl only, is her evidence as a star.
and Sheryl who sit facing the mirror is as beautiful as a greek sculpture.

"Sheryl. I'm coming back. I'll survive this battle and definitely come back. I just came to say that."
"Alto..."
She took her eyes off the mirror, and fixed her gaze upon Alto's eyes.
It's clear as a lake, a beautiful eyes.
What is reflected in it now is, only me. What a kind looking eyes. And, what a sincere eyes. From the first time we met that day, it turn angry, cry, and laugh for someone. A truly beatiful eyes.
The whole ears, are listening deeply to each words flowing, and there's myself who wait for it wholly. It feel so clear it hurts, the warmth.

"Once cannot fly alone. .... He musnt fly. I understand that now so...
Sheryl was about to say something instinctively, and moved her lips, but muttered a different sentence.
Because it musnt be said. The act must continue. I am Sheryl Nome, the Galaxy Fairy.
It's not a role which Grace given to, it's the one she chosed herself.
Standing in the abyss of death, the one she chosed lastly, she cant betray it.

"You finally realized that? You're really slow."
Yes, One cannot fly alone.
The one who helped me realized that, is Alto.
The warmth hugs he gave, the loneliness when he left her alone, the warmth of the kiss, it's not only a phrase, he taught Sheryl the real love and happiness. One's feeling towards other, one held other's hand. such simple things, isn't it wonderful!

That face, kindly smiling. For that smile, Sheryl can stand against anything. That sweetness, which melted the barrier of the heart, in an instant.
"Then its okay. Lets end the lovers game here."
"!? Wait, Sheryl. I-!"
I don't want to hear what he should say next. I want to hear it so badly I can't afford to hear it.
That's why Sheryl, stole his lips.
She moved her tongue, crawled her arm, and moved her legs, a passionate kiss.
How she hope the time would stop. and a second would be an eternity.
"Don't say anything."
I love you.

My soul and body, it's all yours.
If she said that, and if he answered that, he would surely kill Ranka.
Even if that would be only a kind lie to Sheryl, he would faithfully true to his principles as a man, and do just like that.
But, what would face him from tomorrow?
After losing Sheryl, He who have killed Ranka wont be get his happiness. I see, if that happened, then perhaps I would always be in his heart. But, would Sheryl Nome do that?
No.
Let me be the proud woman he loved.
Let me be the one, who let the man she loves keep living, and also let that girl who is like a sunflower keep living.
"If you say it now, I... won't be able to sing. And I wont give up myself."
"That s why..."
"Thats why Alto"

"Save Ranka-chan"
"!"
"Once you've done that, I'll hear out the rest."
"Make sure to come back, you hear me?"
"Sheryl..."
Aah, yes. just let him mad about me. about me, and about Ranka.
I love such Alto. Then when I vanished turned into ashes, the two can live happily.
"Just remember! You'll rarely find as wonderful a woman as me!"
With a smile like angel, Sheryl sent Alto with real painful reluctance.

But too bad the author didn't write this scene from Altos point of view, too.

Just when I thought this scene can't get any more romantic.

Oh, but telling Alto to save Ranka was probably the best choice for Sheryl's happiness. She got cured in the end. If Alto proceed according to plan to kill Ranka, Ranka would have died, Alto might have died during the battle, and Sheryl would have died soon after.

Not sure, but I think this means (I think this is a verb+you sentence... Is it funny to ask for a scan of a novel? ):

I will be [or "Let me be"] the proud woman he loved.
I will be someone who lets the man she loves keep living, and who also lets that girl who is like a sunflower keep living.
