Though I am pretty surprised that nobody from Guilty Crown made it to the list...

Just weird.

^ There's a good reason for that. The results actually reflect what was popular two months before.

Newtype January 2012

I've been looking on-and-off for about 3 weeks, but that was the best I could find.

Sheryl moved up one place to 5th, five of the MadoMagi girls fought each other for votes (and apparently stole some off Yui too), leaving Saber to claim 1st place, and Inori 4th. All rounded out by Ika-chan at #9.

At least I think that's Inori at #4. It's pretty hard to see. nvm, it's a shot from the 4th episode.

As for the guys poll, all I managed to find out was that 'a tussle between the old brigade (Steins;Gate and Tiger & Bunny) and the brat pack (Guilty Crown and Fate/Zero) resulted in Gin-tan slipping through with his loyal retainers to claim the top spot'. If Gai was in there, I bet Alto wasn't.

The other interesting thing to note is that the voting period for this poll started on October 10th (when the 2011 Nov edition came out). I expect the effect of the K-ON movie to be more fully felt in next month's results, or even the month after.

Hm, so the DVD release of the MF movie has yet to be felt in the poll, too?

And thank you, karice, for finding the chart. I suppose the one for February will be out at the mid of this month?

Not shocking. Give it a while.

In my understanding, the polls usually take place months in advance. Why they name it THAT month is beyond me, since it usually takes place the month (or months) before.

Not to forget that the poll is also for one month in advance, i.e. you get a December poll in the November magazine. ^^

I thought we have cleared up this issue way, way back then, both of you~

Short version of explanation: Japanese magazine 'numbering' (month/year-wise) is different than Western; they always have the month(s) (depends on the interval of the magazine publication period) for the issued magazine in advance to when it's published.

Even if you have a hard time accepting it, that is simply how it works in Japan.

Hey, Natsu, nice seeing you.

But, uh, that went over my head. Could you do a chart? Me cave-Magnus, ugh.

Klan owns Alto in the poll.

Didn't expect that at all even though I like Klan too.

No, it's standard practice in America, too. The date on the magazine is usually the date that it should be pulled from the shelf, not the date it goes on sale.

Note, for example, that the current issue of Time Magazine is "January 9."

Back for the holidays, Maggy!

It's actually pretty simple, you just don't have to think that the printed month number in the magazine is the month it is published at <see Yottchin's quote for clarity>. ^^

Yottchin gives better explanation to as why it is issued like that (My fail in English shows since I have no idea to explain that orz):

Thanks Yottchin, I usually bought newspaper than magazine, so I am pretty clueless about American's and other countries' numeral system. Bought Asian version only of Reader's Digest back then before switching to newspaper

I do admit that I actually am used to that kind of numbering system already... I'm even a bit confused with different numberings (aka, used both for different magazines orz) in my home country of all things!

Anyway hope that do clear up the confusion and end the off-topic-ing ^^~

Yot-chan's right. I think it should be the same everywhere, even in Europe, non?

That said, most magazines/publications I know about tend to be referred to by issue number rather than day/month/year.

To explain in relation to the monthly Japanese anime magazines (specifically: Newtype, Animedia, Animage), let's take the upcoming February issue of Newtype.

It'll be published on January 10th, and contain the results of the votes from the December issue (which was published on Nov 10th). The votes that fans will send in for this February issue are for the April issue (to be published March 10th).

It's probably easiest to separate the two threads into:
  • the magazines are published on the 10th of each month
  • the poll always reflects what was popular 2 months prior

I can try to refer to them by issue number if it makes it easier. I'd just have to find out which issue we're currently on...

News of the male character poll came out super early this time, like, on the 7th of Jan.

Anyone want to hazard a guess why?

I wonder who's got the longevity record of being in the Top 10 female anime characters.

Lacus Clyne. She only became a spotty placeholder last year. Otherwise, she had enjoyed a decade-long position on the polls.
