I don't know... but I think episode 9 isn't the pivotal point for Madarame yet. Just the beginning. He was just being his normal otaku self. His crush on Saki truly begins after she cosplays.

Sorry for not making sense there ... haven't been reading the episode spoilers so didn't know what ep 9 was about; it's just that I got the impression that since the Madarame-likes-Saki arc isn't over in the manga, it wasn't appearing in the anime
And no, I didn't get Saki mixed up with Kohsaka - the latter would be so much more wrong that my wee little mind didn't even entertain the possibility, and now boggles at the evil images it's going to have to fend off...

i've just had the pleasure of picture-reading the Genshiken manga raws, and now im even more curious over the new girl!

Is it just my crappy picture-reading skills, or does there seem to be some sort of "rival" thing with her and Ohno-san?

And maybe it's just my wishful thinking (since i think he needs some loving!) but do i see the new lass and Sasahara getting close? (bear with me, i'm kinda still depressed over Ohno-san's pairing...)
I mean in chapter 31 they seem to get alooong reaaallly well.... I'll be gutted if they don't get together. And i also suspect it won't show up in the anime either, eh?

oh. and about Saki's cosplay and er...kosaka...erm...crossdressing cosplay. i really hope they put it in the Anime!! i swear, if they have to end this short series, at leased end it with Saki cosplaying the Chairman (chairwoman?)er i mean chairperson!!!

I never watched gundam (not a mech fan) and I'm not into models so it was really new stuff to me. I was stopping every 10 seconds to read the notes at the top.

After watching episode 8, I must say i never realised that model building is a part of what otaku's do as well... I thought that was a completely different hobby. By the looks of it it ain't that simple either. I wonder if the majority of otaku's in japan also builds models or is it just a minority, a subgroup if you want.

I tried buildng a model once and I must say it was damn hard, and it required lots of patience, I discovered very fast that it wasn't my kind of thing

Oh I didn't think Saki did it on purpose, she was just acting like any complete ignorant civilian would I did feel sorry for Ohno though (after all she is my favorite char closely followed by madarame-kun )

The fansubs section is for the discussion about fansubs, the anime series. The manga section is about the discussion about the manga. When someone sees spoilers in the fansub section they expect to see fansub spoilers, not manga spoilers. Yes, you can make lame ass excuses about how the anime might not follow the manga exactly. But that doesn't change the fact that if the anime follows the manga pretty closely then the manga stuff will probably happen, as in this case.

You guys are not predicting on the story line but predicting on whether or not something in the manga will make it to the anime, which it has a very high possibility of making, as in almost 100%. That way people like me who doesn't want to know everything in advance before we watch the anime won't spoil ourselves. Regular spoilers is for the current fansub version only, which means that the stuff on there won't spoil you if you seen the most recently fansubbed episode. But you guys' spoilers are way ahead. Please be considerate of others next time you post manga stuff, and please at least use manga spoilers.

As for episode 8 itself.

I've never known anything about model kits, so this whole episode was uncharted territory for me. It was funny that this seemed to be the first time that the club members resented having Saki around. I'm not sure if she broke it on purpose, only because I've never seen one in person so I don't know how fragile they really are. If anything, she might have broke it because of how nervous Tanaka made her felt jumping on her every move.

Besides Tanaka, the Genshiken members looked like they only tried it out of curiousity but really weren't into it in a big way. So it's probably more of a subculture.

The good thing about this episode is that it shows how un-otaku Saki is, in the sense that she can't relate with the other members at all. This can be seen from her alienation from specific plamo-related terms, the building process, "the toy vs. model" perspective and much more. However, it also shows how Saki begins to view herself as a part of Genshiken.

And no, I don't think she broke it on purpose. She was just being curious of how durable the model was--since she probably figured it would be similar to a toy.

In a way, I can also relate with Tanaka and co. even though I'm not into model building. For instance, I tend to worry a lot when my friends borrow my manga or dvds. I'm worried that they might open the manga too wide or ruin the plastic covering of the dvd case. It's my money so I have the right to be anal about it.

Considering the amount of material in the manga, and the short length of the series, no it doesn't. Look at episode 3 for instance. That combined two seperate chapters of the manga. I don't think any of us would've predicted that at first.

Wow, my vocabulary has really expanded with this episode!^^

I felt episode 8 was a huge step up from ep7 - though the animation quality still isn't that good, it has improved, the whole plamo-building plot premise is very funny in itself, and the character interactions were priceless (the accompanying BGM/sound effects really added to the scenes - I was almost biting my nails when Saki was handling Ohno's model!) Gotta say I identified more with Saki rather than the other Genshiken members this time round. Not being very conversant with the Gundam universe (still trying to catch up!) nor model building, I found her "You guys need to speak Japanese!" doubly funny since I don't understand Japanese either!

Tanaka blissfully explaining the effects of the seasons on model building, Saki's unconcerned opinion of plamos ("oh, so they're worse than toys"), her pinpointing with painful accuracy why Madarame doesn't build plamodels very often, Kohsaka's response to her wanting to try out one-shoulders, Ohno-Tanaka-Sasahara going hysterical in the courtyard ...... ah, so many good scenes, I can't list them all!

Was anybody else touched by how nice and decent Saki was in this episode? I don't think the genshiken members actually resented her being around, but they (and her) obviously didn't feel comfortable with her being in the clubroom. I felt so sorry for her feeling left out of a club she didn't even want to join in the first place! And despite that, she actually stood up for them against that fungus-footed female, and was trying to be nice by showing interest in Ohno's model. The last few minutes from ~ 22:00 onwards to the end of the next episode preview were some of the funniest consecutive minutes I've ever had with anime.

Oh, and can anybody tell me what it means when Saki says "A Gauf because it's spring?" just before the OP? A small point, but is there another Gundam joke I'm not getting?

Even if you don't click them, it's very annoying to be unable to read half the posts because of the spoilers. If something has already happened in the anime, and you're comparing it to the same events in the manga, that's one thing. However, speculating about what will happen in future episodes based on the manga is uncalled for. You can do that in the manga thread. Whether or not you think it necessary is irrelevant. If there are other people who do, it's just common courtesy to respect their wishes. Is it really that much trouble to go to another thread to talk about this stuff?

This is a reasonable request so can I ask people to follow these suggestions. It shouldn't be that much hassle to mark spoilers in this way (or to supply a header with any of the spoiler tags you make).

I also don't think that Saki broke the palmo on purpose. I've seen many people have similar reactions to this (not just in handling plastic models but with anything fragile). They just don't know the limits, mostly due to lack of experience, and assume that if one bit can move, then any bit can do the same. It's not that they are clumsy or heavy handed, it's just outside their normal experience.

Like so many of these Genshiken episodes, I can relate to the reactions and feeling (of both sides really), how Saki is mystified and how the group members so easily relate to common interests.

They really need Saki in the club for "diplomatic" purposes. Like on one of the previous episodes when the club was on the brink of cancellation, it was mainly through her efforts--along with Kanako and the weird chairman--that ultimately kept them afloat. (Saki's silent laugh for me was the Genshiken moment of the day in that episode. )

I also like that part in episode 8 where Madarame and co. were fantasizing about Saki wearing the cat ears--also that old preview where they imagine a maid character with cat ears and bandages. Such weird humor! It was if they were making fun of the cat ears/maid stereotypes that are abundant in anime and manga.

Another combined episode, that somehow managed to actually expand on both the chapters (Cleaning the clubroom and Kasukabe cosplay). Sadly, it doesn't look like Kasukabe is going to be interested in cosplay after this. A certain evil person made sure she had to talk to the police about the incident while still in her cosplay outfit. If it hadn't been for that, she was well on her way to accepting and understanding cosplay. A pity.

Oh yes, and of course, we had more development on the Madarame/Kasukabe feelings subplot.

Most importantly, it looks like next weeks episode is an almost totally new chapter, not from the manga. Be interesting how this turns out.

I thought this was one of the funniest lines of the show thus far. Along with her "It's springtime, don't you guys have anything better to do?" So they stare at her for a few seconds before she says "Nevermind".
