Maybe Sony should stick to insurance?

Quote:
Its financial arm accounts for 63 percent of Sony’s total operating profit last year. Life insurance has been its biggest moneymaker over the last decade, earning the company 933 billion yen ($9.07 billion) in operating profit in the 10 years that ended in March.

Sony’s film and music divisions, which produced hits like the Spider-Man movies and “Zero Dark Thirty” and recorded musicians like the cellist Yo-Yo Ma and the electronic music duo Daft Punk, have contributed $7 billion to the company’s bottom line over the last decade.

In that time, Sony’s electronics division has lost a cumulative $8.5 billion.

But then who will make my PlayStation 4?

By the way, I'll drop this footnote of a story to underscore earlier observations about Han chauvinism.

China says Xinjiang minorities prefer dancing over making trouble
Quote:
Beijing (May 28, Tue): Ethnic minority people in China's Xinjiang are far more fond of dancing, singing and being good hosts than making trouble, a top official said today, dismissing the idea that the far western region is a hotbed of unrest.

Many Uighurs, a Turkic-speaking Muslim people who live in energy-rich Xinjiang, chafe at Chinese restrictions on their culture, language and religion, and the region is frequently the scene of deadly ethnic violence.

Last month, 21 people were killed in clashes in the heavily ethnic Uighur part of Xinjiang near the old Silk Road city of Kashgar, the deadliest unrest since July 2009, when nearly 200 people were killed in riots in the Xinjiang capital of Urumqi.

But China says it offers broad freedoms in Xinjiang, though few Chinese officials make the effort to learn the Uighur language or understand much about Islam in what is officially an atheist country.

Speaking to reporters in Beijing, deputy Xinjiang governor Shi Dagang said he had worked in southern Xinjiang for more than a decade and never had to carry a gun or have a police escort.

This was the common experience of government officials who are members of the majority Han Chinese ethnicity, many of whom work in areas heavily populated by minorities, he said.

"There is mutual respect by Han cadres and ethnic minorities, and we are friends. When we go into their houses as guests we are treated to meat and wine, with song and dance," Shi said.

"The ethnic minorities are simple-hearted and honest, very kind and unaffected. They love guests," he added. "I hope people don't have misapprehensions and go to Xinjiang and see for themselves."

Sad story

But then, if United States in the 90s were any indication, China probably would see a lot more of these before it is over. The problem is China is getting more westernized (including on sex), but sex Ed isn't catching up. The ideas of condoms/birth control are still behind.

Good. I don't know what the maximum punishment is for attempted murder in China, but I hope they get it. Also, I sincerely hope that he finds a good home, and is not returned to his "parents". It looks like a lot of offers are being made already.

Historically sexual ignorance in Asia was normal. Girls are only suppose to be taught the ropes by the mum the day before the wedding. Guys.. As usual, guys are just suppose to find out from other guys, probably also by visiting brothels. But that's just what happens before the information age.

The weird thing is it isn't religiously motivated. It's just tradition, that some things you just don't talk about.

Now in modern day of course, everyone can find out about ANYTHING they want, they just had to ask. Society had to adjust according to realities. You can't depend on ignorance any more.

I'm not very certain it's Westernisation or just simply modernisation. To label the latter as "Westernisation" seems to imply that only the West is "modern", and that Chinese youth are blindly copying a "Western" lifestyle rather than being themselves in a local context unique to them.

I think the situation may be more complicated. It's not as though amorous relationships are unknown in China, be it today or historically. It may well have simply been less reported in the past and therefore out of the public eye. It doesn't necessarily mean that *wink* *wink* *nudge* *nudge* wasn't going on, out of sight from nosy neighbours. Meanwhile:

Anthropology professor shares stories of how animals grieve

Quote:
Williamsburg, Virginia (May 27, Mon): Attributing human characteristics to animals makes for great cartoons, but it's not usually considered rigorous science. Now, a new book argues that animals do think and feel in ways similar to humans.

Dr Barbara J. King is a professor of anthropology and a commentator on National Public Radio's science blog. And her book, How Animals Grieve, makes a powerful case for the presence of love, affection and grief in animals — from a house cat mourning her lost sister to elephants who pay respects to the bones of their matriarchs.

While there's little research right now on grief in animals, Dr King says that's starting to change. "It's a very exciting time to be studying animal emotion, because there's an immense sea change underway. Scientists are starting to pay attention to animal grief, both at field sites and in zoos and sanctuaries," she writes in an e-mail.

"In the 19th century, Charles Darwin readily saw emotions as varied as grief, jealousy, and joy expressed by a variety of species. But then there developed a concern that we were projecting our own feelings wrongly onto other animals — in other words, there developed a worry about anthropomorphism. That stance of scepticism has taken a long time to recover from, but in fact we're once again opening up to a key realisation. If we look at their behaviour with an open mind, it's the animals themselves who will tell us in no uncertain terms how deeply they feel their lives.

"Credible definitions, cautious observation, and winnowing out what doesn't count as grief in the array of animals' responses to death are all important. But I think the primary requirement is a refusal to assume on principle that human emotions are unique in the animal kingdom.

"The more we understand that the chimpanzee (or cat or rabbit) confined to a biomedical lab feels his life and his friend's death in the next cage over, and that the dairy cow sorrows over the repeated loss of her calves as they're taken away to slaughter, the more we work effectively towards animal welfare.

"Each one of us can do something for animals. Maybe you're all about educating children in wildlife conservation, or working to get cats and dogs spay-neutered. Or maybe you decide not to eat animals any more. Whatever works for you, it all makes a difference."

Woman Beheaded by Elevator in China

A nurse in China was beheaded in an elevator accident and the incident was caught by a CCTV.

The nurse was riding in an elevator at the Changhong Tower in Shenzhen’s Luohu district on May 15, 2013, and the footage clearly shows too many passengers squeezed inside the car.

As the elevator stopped at a lower floor, the woman tries to exit. Just at that moment the elevator car drops, despite the doors still being open, and falls another 3 floors until its brakes kick in.

The sequence, linked to below, is horrific enough, although the actual beheading is obscured and pixelated. The other passengers seemed to have tried to help the unlucky woman, but it all happened so fast there was nothing they could do.

The sequence ends as the doors open in the lobby and the overloaded car empties out, leaving the unfortunate woman behind.

In China, US official promotes military ties

U.S. National Security Adviser Tom Donilon pushed Tuesday for stronger military relations with China, on the final day of a visit to Beijing to set the stage for a summit next month between President Barack Obama and China's Xi Jinping.

Nontraditional military activities such as peacekeeping, disaster relief and anti-piracy operations offer opportunities to boost cooperation and "contribute to greater mutual confidence and understanding," Donilon told Gen. Fan Changlong, a vice chairman of the commission overseeing China's armed forces.

But China has state funded, government sponsored abortion available to everyone.
I don't think ignorance is a valid excuse.

The cheap access of abortion is just the necessity of 1 child policy; if you don't want people to have children, you need to give them the option of following the law.
Uniquely, because they are trying to discourage gender bias selective abortions, the government is trying to ban ultrasounds for the purpose of gender identification.

But people do it anyway because there is money to be made. And this caused the famous gender imbalance. I wonder how they are going in fixing it?

No my point is, since abortion is a given option by the government, the parents who went ahead and gave birth then flushed the kid down the toilet has no excuse.
They were given government funded abortion option long before getting to that point. Ignorance of protected sex may lead to pregnancy, but since they had an option to fall back on, ignorance is not a valid excuse.

I'm not sure what you're going about, it's not relevant to the case.

The old way was to take over someone else's land, kill their men, an take their women to breed them into extinction. That was how one handled a gender imbalance.

I wasn't disagreeing with you. But still, it doesn't mean the case isn't relevant. Even though people still do it, gender identification is still illegal. So the baby being flushed might be gender-motivated. They might have decided to get rid of a female child because they could only have one kid. And they didn't get an abortion earlier because they didn't get the gender identified.

South China Sea tension mounts near Filipino shipwreck
http://www.reuters.com/article/2013/...94R0YS20130529
Quote:
A wrecked navy transport ship perched on a remote coral reef could be the next flashpoint in the South China Sea, where China and five other claimants bitterly dispute territory.

The Philippines is accusing China of encroachment after three Chinese ships, including a naval frigate, converged just 5 nautical miles from an old transport ship that Manila ran aground on a reef in 1999 to mark its territory.

I wish we can find a way to solve fish stock shortages so we can stop fighting over fishing rights. Didn't Somalia pirates start as unemployed fishermen? We need to mass produce farmed fish.

Various reports suggest the woman dropped the baby into the sewer pipe by accident.

Woman who reported baby in sewer pipe admits she's the mother
Quote:
Beijing (May 29, Wed): A 22-year-old woman who raised the initial alarm about a newborn baby trapped in a sewer pipe in China kept quiet about being his mother even as she watched the sensational two-hour rescue unfold, reports said today.

The woman, whose name was not revealed in state media reports, confessed to police a couple of days later when they asked her to undergo a medical checkup after searching her rented room and finding toys and blood-stained toilet paper, the state-run Zhejiang News website said.

The single woman, a tenant in the building, told the police she could not afford an abortion and secretly delivered the child on Saturday afternoon in the toilet. She said the newborn baby slipped into the sewer line and that she alerted her landlord of the trapped baby after she could not pull the child out, Zhejiang News said.

The police initially said they were treating the case of as possible attempted homicide, but it was not immediately clear whether the mother would face any criminal charges.

In China, unwanted pregnancies have been on the rise because of a lack of sex education and of an increasingly lax attitude towards sex. Young men and women often are engaged in unprotected sex, and abortions have become increasingly common.
