After playing Muv-Luv I have to say Kazumi Okushima's role as Meiya Mitsurugi has to be one of my all time favourite characters. XD

I have a hard time picking what seiyuu I like in order. But to me, my favorite would have to be Kaori Nazuka. To me, she seems like a very underrated seiyuu. I like most of her work from Miyu in Daa! Daa! Daa! to Eureka from Eureka Seven all the way up to Lynnette from Strike Witches and Ayatsuji from Amagami. Not to mention Totori from Atelier Totori/Meruru. She has that sort of charm in her voice that I find very attractive. And being that she's done this since age 14 up until last year, I have a lot of respect for her. I could even say the same for Miyuki Sawashiro. They're both very talented and fun to listen to.

Other seiyuu I like (in no particular order):

Yui Horie
Rie Tanaka
Yukari Tamura
Marina Inoue
Eri Kitamura
Mamiko Noto
Mai Kadowaki
Misato Fukuen

For me it would be Toyasaki Aki and Tomatsu Haruka. Both of this VA have voice range especially Tomatus Haruka. She creates a new flavour for every character she plays and gives a sense of excitement hearing how would her character sound like this time. The same also goes with Toyasaki where she could play diffrent roles to that tease people to their core. Some of her good roles like Aoi from Beelzebub really show her true talent making you smile everytime you hear her voice.

I want to mention male voice actors who I'm impressed with.
The first one would be Shintaro Asanuma. I was blown away when I was watching Tatami Galaxy. I think he needs more roles but very unappreciated.

I like Hiroshi Kamiya and he's got a good range and the chops but maybe too overused.
In English voice actor side, I like Troy Baker, Luci Christian, Josh Phillips, Erica Weinstein and Carrie Savage.

These are some of my favorites. I'll try to limit myself to a couple of handfuls.

Female

Horie Yui. Her voice is incredibly soft, cute and adorable. She has a distinct and unique quality that is instantly recognizable, and I tend to find all characters she lends her voice to compelling in one way or another. In addition to just drop-dead adorable roles which which she is well known for, I find that a lot of her roles are pretty strong female characters. Her voice lends itself very easily to females who perform great balancing acts of femininity and strength.

Some of my favorite roles of hers include: Hanyuu (Higurashi), Ayu (Kanon), Minori (Toradora), Tsurara (Nurarihyon no Mago)

Hanazawa Kana.
Do I really need to say anything? If you're interested in current anime, you've very likely intimately familiar with her work. The empress of cute, the queen of moe and mistress of all things adorable, she brings forth peerless levels of affection and cuteness with her outstanding performances. She's well deserving of her immense popularity, and I never tire of her voice. Again, she's instantly recognizable and possesses a unique trait unseen in any other voice actress I've come across. She's almost too cute, but I don't believe such a thing exists as long as it's genuine.

Bring on the diabetes; it's so worth it.

Favorite roles: Charlotte (Infinite Stratos), Zange (Kannagi), Sengoku Nadeko (Bakemonogatari), Susukihotaru (Otome Youkai Zakuro)

Kuwashima Houko. A living incarnation of female coolness, her roles encompass everything awesome and bad-ass the gentler gender has to offer. From calm and collected to enigmatic to bloodthirsty, she delivers them all excellently. Her range is great, and several of her roles have really stuck with me through the years; a testament to her ability.

Favorite roles: Quon (Rahxephon), Clare (Claymore), Tomoyo (Clannad)

Tamura Yukari. Tamura has an incredibly high-pitched voice, which you'd think would be annoying, however it is anything but. She brings tons of life and character to all her roles, and though her voice is always recognizable, her range is still strong. She can be incredibly funny, and her voice always brings a smile to my face.

Favorite roles: Togame (Katanagatri), Rika(Higurashi), Mai (Kanon), Nanoha (Nanoha)

Ueda Kana. I could literally just say "versatility" and end it there. Her repertoire speaks for itself, the woman can pull off almost any role on earth convincingly, and do it just as well as those who specialize in the field. Just an all-around impressive performer, with many of my favorite characters under her belt.

Favorite roles: Fumika (Shigofumi), Tohsaka Rin (Fate-Stay/Night), Rachel (Blazblue)

Imai Asami. The only newcomer on the list, and I don't include her among my favorites due to some spur of the moment infatuation. She's well deserving of it. I first became familiar with her work through her voicing of Tsubaki Yayoi from the game Blazblue, and fell in love with the character. What really solidified my interest in her as an actress was the character songs that accompanied it, though. They're some of the best music I've heard in a long time, and her vocals are absolutely outstanding. I'm sure she's entered a lot more people's radar now that she's voicing the ever-incredible Makise Kurisu from Steins;Gate, and will hopefully gain a lot more fans through this and her current role in The Idolm@aster.

Favorite roles: Tsubaki Yayoi (Blazblue), Chelsea (Shufuku no Campanella), Makise Kurisu (Steins;Gate)

Male

Females often take a lot of the spotlight, but there are a lot of tremendous male actors out there.

Koyasu Takehito. He's an obligatory inclusion. He has a deep and authoritative voice, and has lent his talent to more characters than any of us can be asked to remember. I love his bishounen, silver-tongued characters, but he can do a lot of different roles, proving to be both hilarious and quite bad ass.

Favorite roles: Jade Curtiss (Tales of the Abyss), Shark (Seto no Hanayome), Calian Loss (Chrome Shelled Regios)

Fukuyama Jun. The quintessential male performer. He's done just about everything, handling both down to earth characters and intimidating tough guys. He has a special smooth-talking style, you'd follow this guy to hell and back.

Favorite roles. Lawrence Kraft (Spice and Wolf), Nura Riko (Nurarihyon no Mago), Lelouch (Code Geass)

Wakamoto Norio. If Hanazawa Kana epitomizes everything cutely feminine, Wakamoto Norio is the counterweight, exemplifying almost absurd levels of badassery (should be a word) and inspiring outright awe in his listeners. His voice is incredible, he is so bad-ass you can do nothing but stare in amazement when he's on-screen. No one comes close to be as cool and tough as this guy; no one. He's the anime equivalent of Clint Eastwood, and that statement should carry a lot of weight. He's also incredibly funny when his voice is used for comedic purposes.

Favorite roles: Alexander Anderson (Hellsing Ultimate), Vicious (Cowboy Bebop), Charles of Britannia (Code Geass), Johnny (Guilty Gear)

That's it. There are at least a dozen more I feel horrible about not including, especially on the female end, but suffice to say that I appreciate the work of voice actors and actresses immensely. It's a huge part of why I enjoy anime to the extent that I do.

Since we appear to watch rather a different spectrum of programs, I'll add two more distinctive roles for Kuwashima, who is also in my list of top female seiyuu. For me her most impressive performance was Shurrei in Saiunkoku Monogatari. She slides easily between comedic and serious material throughout this show. Her speech in episode eight of the second season of Saiunkoku where she berates the (uniformly male) members of the Imperial Court remains her single most-memorable performance for me.

I also think she brings an appropriate edge of menace to a mere ten-year-old girl in her performance as "Isako" in Dennou Coil. . I've rarely heard her voice children, but she's quite effective in Coil and also as Sheila in Mahou Shoujo Tai Arusu.

Totally agree with you here ... she did an amazing job in the 2 Saiunkoku seasons!

Kuwashima Houko is also a favorite of mine. I am kind of sad she has not been in anything recently or at least not in anything I've been watching.

Now that the novels are finished, I'm really hoping we will get a final season of Saiunkoku.

My favorite seiyuu is probably Yui Horie, she's the only one whose voice will make me melt instantly, no matter what character she's playing. Her role as Minorin was probably the one that burned her into my memory forever xD
I also like Katou Emiri a lot and am sort of amazed by how different Tomatsu Haruka sounds as Yuina compared to her role as Anaru. And I'm staring to like Tsuda Minami after hearing Yui's character songs, so I'm curious about how she'll do in future roles.

Male
Hiroshi Kamiya's Takemoto from HnC was impressive, and his performance as Natsume is just as amazing. Another VA I like is Sakurai Takahiro.

Scanning her list of roles, the last performance I remember seeing is the main character Chizuru in the Hakuouki series.

She's done a lot of work for Madhouse, which lately doesn't seem to be turning out compelling series at the pace they displayed just a few years ago. I hope they don't get led too astray by their Marvel collaborations which I have no interest in watching.

I didn't think much of Aoi's performance in Madoka because, to be frank, the script gave her little to do. I thought her work in SHAFT's Dance in the Vampire Bund was a far superior performance because it demanded she voice Mina in a wide variety of settings and emotions. That and her sparkling performance at age sixteen as Kuhouin Murasaki in Kure-nai are my favorites.

And, yes, Ayu Matsuura is quite impressive as Rin, and she's only ten!

It's probably true that we watch different types of anime to an extent, but my list of favorite roles in this thread doesn't necessarily represent my general taste; my favorite shows stretch across all genres. I've seen and loves several of the shows displayed in your signature too. I haven't watched either of these two, though. I'll make a note of them!

In any event, I'm glad to see a lot of love for Kuwashima here. I didn't except that many people to have her on their list of favorites as well. I appear to be in good company!

I... didn't even notice. I guess it's been a good while since I've seen here in anything else. Great performance there too, but a bit of an inconsistent series, the first season especially.

You're not missing out on much with what I've seen (everything except Wolverine, which was too boring to sit through) of the Marvel collaborations... mediocrity incarnate.

Aoi Yuuki was another person I wanted to include. She's pretty incredible. I completely agree with you here. I found her performance in Madoka to be very good, but like you say, it's a one-note deal. Not too memorable. She was fantastic in both Vampire Bund and Kurenai. The former of which receives a bit more hate than it has warranted, I think. But that's probably a discussion for another thread.

Yuuki's current work as Alice in Ikoku Meiro no Croisse has a lot of flare and liveliness to it as well. She makes an otherwise pretty cookie-cutter character stand out with her performance.

Agreed. I thought Yuki's performance as Princess Mina was GREAT. She also had some moments I thought were really great in Gosick as well!

I also really liked her as Ichigo in Yumeiro Patissiere and have recently been enjoying her as Alice in Ikoku Meiro.

In both of the latter roles she seems to have gotten plenty of opportunities to let loose some of her characteristic squeaks and shouts of wrath and surprise that I find I like quite a bit.

She is an "up and coming" voice I find I enjoy almost in every role she is cast in ... almost. I wasn't too thrilled with her roles in Yutori-chan or Madoka either, but as Seiji said, I also think that the roles themselves did not really let her "shine" as much as she has been able to in other ones I enjoyed much more.

This is a great thread.

My absolute favorite female seiyuu is Noto Mamiko. Her unique and soft spoken voice has given way to some of my favorite characters. Her acting always grabs me, and I feel calm at times.

Some of her more notible roles includes: Nina Fortner (Monster), Tsukamoto Yakumo (School Rumble), Enma Ai (Hell Girl), Hecate/Konoe Fumina (Shakugan no Shana), Toudou Shimako (Maria-sama ga Miteru), Miyazaki Nodoka (Negima!?), and Kuronuma Sawako (Kimi ni Todoke), among many, many more roles.

After her, there are two others that I really like as well.

Inoue Kikuko is always the "big sister" for us. She has a reliable and soothing voice, and she has done many great roles.

Some of her roles are: Tendou Kasumi (Ranma 1/2), Belldandy (Ah! My Goddess), Kazami Mizuho (Please Teacher!), Miria (Claymore), and Cecile Croomy (Code Geass).

Also, Tanaka Rie has been someone I have enjoyed watching for many years. She has a lot of range, and adds a lot of emotions to her roles.

Some of her roles are: Sanada Mitsuki (Dual! Parallel Trouble Adventures), Chii/Freya (Chobits), Lacus Clyne/Meer Campbell (Gundam Seed), Suigintou (Rozen Maiden), Simca (Air Gear), Futami Eriko (KimiKiss Pure Rouge), Maria (Hayate no Gotoku!),and Aizawa Chizuru (Shinryaku! Ika Musume).

As for male seiyuu, there are quite a few good ones I like, but none that I like most. Fukuyama Jun (Lelouche in Code Geass), Koyasu Takehito (Aokiji in One Piece), and Wakamoto Norio (Narrator in Hayate no Gotoku!) are some of my favorites.

While Tanaka is known for voicing moe~ characters like the ones you list, for me, her most outstanding performance is her portrayal of the frustrated magazine editor in Hataraki Man. Subs for this show by [Arienai] exist but aren't widely listed. It's well worth the effort to track them down if you're a Tanaka fan, though. You'll hear an entirely different range of vocal characterizations.

Great discussion in this thread. My favorite right now is Yuuki Aoi. She always seems to come up with something a bit different. And she has a great instrument to work with. I'm really looking forward to what she can do in the new Last Exile.

But I agree she didn't do much in MadoMagi. My favorite performances of hers are from Yumeiro Patissiere, Vampire Bund, Ichiban Ushiro no Dao Maou, Yutori-chan, and Shiki. Her strongest Japanese fans seem to prefer Kiruminzoo, where I believe she was given a lot of freedom to indulge her fantasies. But that meant her voice changed volume so much that it seemed to drop out for me from time to time.

But I can't really rank seiyuus, since I like so many of them, and they all have their special talents. I find myself not much of a fan of such big names as Horie Yui, Tanaka Rie, and Mizuki Nana -- although Nana's recent performances have caught my attention. I love a wide range of voices, from Kuwashima Houko through Saitou Chiwa, Sawashiro Miyuki, Yukino Satsuki, Tamura Yukari, Sanpei Yuuko, Koshimizu Ami, Kawasumi Ayako, Endou Aya, Yahagi Sayuri, Toyosaki Aki, Takagaki Ayahi, Hanazawa Kana, and recently Tomatsu Haruka.

And I've begun to appreciate the male voices more: e.g., Miyano Mamoru, Irino Miyu, Miki Shinichirou, Fujiwara Keiji, Kamiya Hiroshi, Ono Daisuke, Sugita Tomokazu, and recently relative newcomer Kimura Ryouhei.
