That's what got me interested, but then they started moving.

And while I agree LNs in general have been swarmed with rehashed stuff filled with moe/harem/imoutos in the last 5 (or more?) years, the blanket judgement on how 'bad' LNs are is uncalled for. I can list 10 LN titles right now that are far from 'generic' (IMO), and nothing resembling this:
1. Rental Magica
2. Chrome Shelled Regios
3. Asura Cryin'
4. Densetsu no Yuusha no Densetsu (even though the literary style is questionable )
5. Toradora
6. Kami-sama no Memochou
7. Kokoro Connect
8. Utsuro no Hako to Zero no Maria
9. Kino no Tabi
10. Iris on Rainy Days

Furthermore, titles like Fate/Zero and Another have been republished under LN labels, in addition to their original Bunko labels. And Hyouka first started under a LN label before the switch.
I don't particularly like a lot of those titles you mentioned, but the more general point is that for every LN like that, you get a lot of things like Haganai. Sturgeon's law in full effect here. Wish we got more stuff like Mahouka.

But don't worry, I doubt I'll be back for episode 2 .

I find ridiculous your appreciation. This show, since the very adaptation announcement, was expected to be a kaminomi-like series with scifi elements so I don't what do you had in mind e.e. To each their own, I guess.
The main characters lacks all the charm of Keima's character. He's not funny at all.

Keima wasn't funny until some episode later(him throwing like Nobita isn't funny) when he did shine and still I don't get used to his voice actor...

This has serious Infinite Stratos vibes, and from what I've seen I think the series will be divided into arcs, which might be a good thing.

Not that I didn't enjoy IS before, but having all the girls fawning over the male lead did get tiresome around halfway through. I still watched it for the battles though.

if this turns out to be one of those predictable generic harem comedy series, at least I'll have a chance to see some nice action scenes.

also, did they upgrade the student council president from girls und panzer into an airship commander now? lol, she also picked up a lollipop along the way.

So, this show is pretty much Kaminomi in a sci-fi setting, huh? Not sure what to think of it yet.
Let us hope. I was liking her character until her personality pulled a 180. In his shoes I'd seriously be wondering if I went insane or hit my head so hard that I was still unconscious. I'd really regret in his shoes bothering to be worried.

Will have to see how things go in the coming episodes to get a better feel for her total character.

The bubbly atmosphere of the show due to it's 'childish' bgm feels weird somehow... Though I get it that they're pushing for an eroge feel?

Same here... however this is the same way I was feeling when I read the light novel until later. Touka is still at the top for me but... COMMANDER KOTORI~ Great, now I'm broken too...

To be fair, Great Imouto Kotori wasn't exactly ideal either- but it was doable... In certain sense of the word.

It's a wonder how Kotori can find time to command her invisible skyship while role playing as the school-life imouto. Are the shadows beneath Reine's eyes eyebags or some kind of strange make-up? She looks perpetually in need of sleep. Only in anime can eyebags look so moe.

Anything can look moe in anime. That's a given? Just think about Heterochromia eyes. Have you look at Fujima Takuya's art (if you ever think about Nanoha ViVid) or some of the other characters with those type of eyes (Mihoko Fukuji from Saki), oh my god, HHHNNNNGGGGHHHH!!! But in real life... it's different. Also red irises. In anime it looks great but one of friend when I was a child had red irises. She does not look as cute with those eys...

Yeah, I wouldn't say that Imouto Kotori was perfect. But she was pretty damn entertaining .

[mod edit: remove spoiler about future content]

EDIT: Oh and maybe it's because I'm already a gigantic fan of the light novel, but outside of some odd pacing in the second half of ep1, and the omission of a scene along with altering the blackboard scene in the second ep, I love this series. It's overused classic visual novel tropes, plus Infinite Stratos like feel and harem stereotypes all mashed together into a beautiful blend of cute and awesome. It's derivative, it knows it, and it revels in it. It's great.

EDIT2: There is one thing the anime changed that they did better over the novel, and that's

Spoiler:

EDIT3: Oh and people keep making Tohka - Houki comparisons. Just you wait. Houki's your typical bitchy tsundere, but Tohka..... well, just wait and see.

But but but... to save the world, you must date these walking disasters. Is that not fun enough?! Also, each episode have around 24 minutes. You watched 5 minutes? Congratulation! You missed all the good stuff.
