Bandai Entertainment: No New BDs. DVDs, Manga after February

http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/news...dvds-bds-manga

At least they'll still print out DVDs of their existing library until the licenses expire but I am very sad to hear that Gosick won't be released by them. I hope Sentai or Funimation license rescues that(although Funi getting it would mean that CR will lose another library title). I am sure that Nichijou being cancelled for a release will upset some.

I hope that Sentai picks up the second season of K-On so I can buy that(and maybe down the line be able to do a boxset of the first season with the right music in one scene and with the JP extras).

Three out of five of their full timers are losing their jobs! They only had five full time employees!? Wow.

First Tokyo Pop and now Bandai... this isn't good.

Damning, but not unexpected. Honestly I'm surprised they even lasted this long.

After the first contraction in 2008ish, they had basically switched entirely to contractors. I actually believe all 5 full time employees are the ones who were on stage at Otakon.

<sigh> I can only buy so many products, more anime fans need to actually buy what they like... Some of the industry I've said, "Good riddance" but Bandai I always appreciated.

Was looking forward to making Turn A Gundam my first anime purchase of the year, but honestly really not surprised this is how it turned out. When I first heard it announced I thought it was too good to be true and as it turns out it was.

This sucks. Not only North American licensors are now one company less, this means that R1 purchases of anime is becoming closer to becoming extinct.

This is really unfortunate.

Ohh man

I was planning on buying the first season of K-On, I have yet to watch it but I hear a lot of positive things about it. I'm glad i'll still be able to buy it for the time being, but I guess the second season is a no go

Does this also include the K-On movie being effected?

It means neither the second season or the movie will be released by Bandai. Beyond that - who knows. They could, in theory, be licensed for US release by someone else. Or not.

They just threw the DVDs in an over sized box and sent it out the door. About half the DVDs arrived as floaters all scratched up.

Anyway, I hope that the second Gundam 0079 set actually makes it out. That's the only thing they have left on their schedule I'm interested in other than Nichijou. And I seriously hope Nichijou doesn't end up in some sort of licensing hell that prevents a R1 disc release. It would suck if they don't sub-license it for DVD release by someone else and just stream it (or never release it at all).

What would be best is if they lose their licenses and someone like Funimation picks Code Geass and Gundam 00 up and gives us blu-ray releases.

Seriously, Bandai has made some really poor choices. They release Unicorn in two movie parts on DVD only... *shakes head*...

How else are they supposed to do this? Bandai Japan is handling the BD release.

There's also Aniplex which is super expensive and whatever left of the old ADV. Other than that, I guess you have small fish like Media Blasters and NIS America...

That's not my job. But I imagine the best way is to show them how they can make more money by doing BDs as well. However, the root is probably the region coding and the fear of reverse importing. Need to make a different region for Japan like DVDs.

They also should have revised their release style. No three parted volumes or anything. Funi did their homework and found the consumer prefers to have more episodes in a release and I think it's working out well for them.

Double bummer since I was following Gurren Laggan as well...

At least I got eight volumes of Lucky Star out of it (and the first season of K-ON!).
