5 Million downloads reached, for a game that released fully in August that is impressive.

  • they are currently reflecting on how to "speed up content" as they understand that they're currently a bit too slow
  • they've been trying to avoid putting in all the new year content in one update
  • at first they was very strict on following the original view of the world in making of the characters, following the timeline of the series(from Stiyl-Acqua was in order of appearance)
  • but having looked at Virutal On and saw the appearance of things such as New Testament characters, Lessar and Ascalon Acqua along with the recent experience of other IP games with a relatively free game world setting(I would assume one example is Fighterz)
  • So in 2018 they decided that they will also think of ways to make player favorite characters as soon as possible instead of restraining characters based on plot or sequence
  • Of course this means they will be less likely to do a original character(I would assume something like Gekota Man)
  • The city story(I assume open world quests) will be fully adjusted this year
  • and alongside this content they will make adjustments internally to improve productivity

The twin-stick controller for Virtual-On will be returning.

I only found an article in French explaining this and allowing for easy translation with Google translate:

Twin Stick project announced for A Certain Magical Virtual-On

The company, Tanita, announced yesterday that it started a development project of a Twin-Stick to the game A Certain Magical Virtual-On, which was released on 15th February in Japan. The company has created a Twitter account dedicated to this project.

For the anecdote, on January 22, a competition between SEGA and Tanita took place in the premises of the second. They challenged themselves on the Dreamcast version and in case of victory, SEGA wanted Tanita to put a poster of the new Virtual-On in the home of the company.

But Tanita had a team of tough guys with veterans of the video game world, result, 3 defeats of SEGA on 5 games!

Tanita's big boss, Mr. Tanita is himself a fan of the series and therefore wanted to develop the ideal controller for Virtual-On; namely a twin-stick.

Tanita is best known for its scales and measuring devices related to health and physical activity, so it is quite surprising to see them develop a device for game consoles. That said, the Twin-Stick will be equipped with heart rate sensors, so they stay in their specialty.

No prices or release date have been announced yet.
So there you go, wavehawk. Somehow, life has found a way for this bipolar crossover.

Lastly, playthrough of the game's story mode has revealed an unlockable character:

Furashina Ririn and VR-44/2000/X Cypher 2000 "Blue Stalker"

Because Touma has a crossover with Virtual-On, this is basically his ticket to the Super Robot Wars universe, thus allowing this interesting crossover match between him and notable characters from Index/Railgun and characters from Code Geass.

This would mark the first time the Toaru Majutsu no Index franchise crossed over with a Super Robot Wars game.

In story in-game, the characters somehow end up in the world of Code Geass and they end up teaming up with the Black Knights as well as the Laserion and Zegapain characters. The climax of the story has Lelouch Lamperouge, main character of Code Geass, betray Touma because he wants the power of the Imagine Breaker, and asks Touma to accompany him back to his world, the world of Code Geass, but he refuses. Seeing this, he uses the Geass on Mikoto but she is able to resist it because she has "experience to these kind of things". Lelouch then has Kallen use her mech to force Mikoto, Kuroko, and Index from returning to their world. Touma then fights Lelouch and is beaten Touma asks Lelouch why he wants the Imagine Breaker, though he doesn't say. CC tells Touma that it's because he wants to erase his past mistakes. Lelouch however says that he doesn't regret his mistakes, and was prepared to shoulder all the sins that come along with the Geass. Lelouch explains that he wants the Imagine Breaker to counter other Geass users. Hearing this, Touma then punches Lelouch's Zero mask, finaly seeing him eye-to-eye.

In a speech, Touma mentions that though Lelouch has betrayed Index even though she helped him, he is still his friend, and that he is confident that Lelouch, who carries the burden of many lives, will not fall into despair if he's not there with him. He then says if Lelouch ever feels crushed by that burden then he need only remember the "Touma inside of him" that will punch him back to his senses. As the world crumbles, Touma and Lelouch have one final battle again, with Touma determined to break Lelouch's illusions. Touma comes out victorious, though severely damaging his mech. After the battle, Touma wants to know why he didn't just use Geass. First, Lelouch thinks that Touma might have just negated it, but then he admits that he didn't use it because he doesn't want to make the same mistake again of using Geass on a friend, harking back to his earlier flashback of using Geass on Euphemia.

As the characters go back to their respective worlds, CC asks if Lelouch wanted the Imagine Breaker or Kamijou Touma instead. Lelouch doesn't reply as CC guesses that Lelouch may have been after something that can support him as he moves toward the future. CC asks Lelouch if she and Kallen is not enough for him. But Lelouch merely laughs it off, once again proclaiming that he is Zero, and that he will continue to move forward with his own power.

A very in-depth retrospective/review of the entire Virtual-on series, game by game:

https://aaltomies.wordpress.com/robo...ted-materials/

But more importantly, for A Certain Magical Virtual-On:

https://aaltomies.wordpress.com/2018...al-virtual-on/

Key quotes:

Quote:
You could say that the game is spartan in content, but the emphasize has been on quality over quantity, as A Certain Magical Virtual-On is probably the best entry in the series.
Quote:
Prior to the game’s release, both A Certain Magical Index and Virtual-On fans seemed to have a negative reaction to the game overall, especially in the Western fandom. It wasn’t all too uncommon to accuse Sega to turn Virtual-On into a waifugame (which they already had done with Oratorio Tangram, but clang clang is something people usually don’t think about) and lamenting that such an awful IP had to sully a legendary game series.

Some Index fans lamented similar fate, as none of the previous games based on the series are particularly high quality. However, it would seem the game has won the Japanese fans over with its high-quality production.

The most common complaint in both East and West has been how it plays differently from Oratorio Tangram, but as usual, you can’t simply repackage the same game over and over again. Oratorio Tangram has been deified by Virtual-On fans to the point that they’ll settle nothing else but Oratorio Tangram 2.0, which would have very little point to it. With the changes and addition A Certain Magical Virtual-On has done to the systems, we’ve gained something different that is in many places superior to Oratorio Tangram.

I have hopes that this title will revive the interest on Virtual-On for the time being, and that the game will ensure future entries in the franchise to keep it relevant, be it tied to A Certain Magical Index or not.
