The Surge

When playing any of the Dark Souls games (or even Salt & Sanctuary), did you find yourself thinking, 'hey, wouldn't it be cool if someone applied these mechanics to a sci-fi setting?'

If so, Focus Home Interactive and Deck 13 have your back with this tale of a workday gone very, very wrong. While the official site is pretty bare at the moment, there is a GameInformer article that helps answer those six basic questions. And there's video, thanks to IGN.

Wow, a futuristic sci-fi dark souls'esque game.

Read the article. Interesting. But I don't think there will a be a character creator. I think it's only focused on a guy named Warren.

But the dark souls like gameplay might be enough to make me shell-out my money for this game.

Then again, later on, if they allow to choose between multiple characters... let's just say that if I can choose between Warren and a white-haired girl (just like NieR: Automata)... you can be sure I'll buy this game.

About damn time someone made a scifi dark souls, though actually when I'm playing on NG++ of Dark Souls I had this yearning for scifi instead of fantasy, but it's kinda hard for me to imagine that... Why? Guns. That's why.

Correct. However, given that crafting is a big part of the game, I imagine you'll at least be able to recolor your exo components to suit your tastes.[/QUOTE]

Keeping in mind that it's a matter of being faster that the operator (instead of actually trying to outrun the beam/bolt/projectile), it's not that hard to imagine, especially if your scifi setting also gets into augmentations (Cyberpunk 2020 and the upcoming 2077; Shadowrun; Deus Ex; et cetera). This particular game gets points for end-running that issue in a way that's fairly justified in-universe.

Well, they spat out the Gamescom trailer...

It's the same portion of the game, but actually touches on how crafting works. Each area has an ops center, which contains not only the crafting station, but the 'bank' for the tech points needed to raise your core level (see also: how shrines function in Nioh). When you relieve an enemy of, say, a weapon arm, that's dropped in game as a blueprint; you take that to the crafting station and fabricate a replica of it for your own use. Interestingly, at least in this demo, these can be swapped out on the fly.

And the plot thickens...

A new trailer is out...

A couple of things which stand out:
  • at least one mook type seems to be able to remain active after being... Bishop'd (see also: necromorphs);
  • we see a new, unusual enemy type that can bifurcate;
  • oddly, stealth attacks/backstabs don't seem to be incorporated as yet - the very first encounter is a textbook example of where one would be eminently appropriate...

The journey of a thousand miles...

...begins, as the saying goes, with a single step. Behold the introductory area of the game, complete with a few deaths.
