Do you know a martial arts?

When I was younger I took a bit of jiu jitsu - quit pretty quickly cause i couldnt handle it (i was a big quitter back then) I wanted to get back into it now since i could definitely use the exercise and i never know when i might need to have some form of self defense. Is anyone here taking any martial arts or has? How did you like it? Has your training ever been useful to you yet?

This thread pretty much covers the main part of this topic. As for myself, I've done a little tae kwon do, which ended up as a pretty big handicap when I came around to learning capoeira, due to the difference in stances.

While the former was alright, capoeira is very fun to practice. My school has set on a new path, focusing on attacks, grabs and evasive maneuvers, but I've experienced ~4 months of traditional capoeira, singing, dancing and playing the instruments.

It's been two years since I started out. I am physically stronger, more fit, but more importantly, I've earned battle experience: knowing when to do what, where an attack is coming from...it's a thing you develop after taking a lot of hits - it cannot be studied, but rather, it is passed down. I don't participate in events, but I'd love to enter a bigger group, if only for the chance to fight against more people.

As for quitting...it had occured to me during the first two sessions. The warm-up alone was enough to make my muscles so sore, that I couldn't get out of bed, plus I sweat a lot. Of course, I've gotten used to it by now, although I still remember some attempts we had at tricking (which required an even more vicious warm-up, for good reason).

Been doing Tang Soo Do since I was eight. It's closely related to Tae Kwon Do and my club goes for a fairly family orientated atmosphere with many cases of parents and children training together, as well as a few grandparents and grandchildren too.

All in all, its likely were my interest in Asian culture started

Okinawa Karatedo, shōdan, and my training, I use everyday. My dōjō places a lot of emphasis on mental and spiritual training. Never had to apply the practical training yet, thankfully.

I trained in Eskrima for a little over a year. It's a pretty interesting, lesser known martial art that basically encompasses hand-to-hand and weapon training.
