So just wondering, is Samui dead in the story? Seeing as she got absorbed by that bucket thing, and then that bucket thing was fed to the Gedo Mazo in order to form the Jyuubi, which was then sealed inside Obito...

the bucket wasn't sealed inside obito. he extracted the gold and silver bros and had the gedo mazo absorb their chakra. most likely samui, her dumb brother, and anyone who was inside the bucket is probably in some genjutsu stupor/tied up at the akatsuki hideout and will get saved along with yamato at some point.

on a side note, it would have been much more interesting for kishi to introduce long-dead characters into the story by extracting them from sealing devices and techniques like that bucket and the reaper as opposed to edo-tensei. just my opinion, but it would have been something different and felt less like a hack

How can you "keep" someone as a person they never were?

not to mention it being nonsensical, out of character and a horrible story line

It was a popular fan theory many years ago, People still want it to be real.

Yondaime being Naruto's pop was a popular fan theory years ago as well. I remember the endless discussions, with the same arguments being made over and over again, how they looked alike, etc. And yet there were so many people who ridiculed the notion. And hey guess what, it turned out to be true.

Same deal with Tobi being Obito.

There was strong evidence in both those cases, None in this one.
