Adaware and Spybot

To prevent getting them in the first place, use a web browser that lets you turn off javascript and block popups (I use firefox), don't install crappy freeware software, don't use Outlook, and get a firewall like zone alarm (it will tell you when things make an outgoing connection to try to download and install crap).

As stated above, AdAware and Spybot together generally provide enough detection for the average user. However, HijackThis can give you a snapshot of whats running on your computer. It doesnt miss anything like the Taskmanager can.

WARNING:HijackThis can be destructive to usefull programs, don't just go around deleting things!

Also, if you are using Windows XP, I suggest Service Pack 2. It has some very minor problems in it still, but it stops unsigned ActiveX downloads (which is where much spyware comes from). XPSP2 even has a handy way to allow ActiveX on sites you trust. If worse comes to worse, you can always uninstall it.

It is easy, actually:

1) Get ZoneAlarm from (free version).
2) Do a fresh install (it's the easiest way to start). Just in case, un-plug your Internet cable.
3) Install the firewall right away, then update the OS.
4) Get a non-IE browser, like Mozilla/Konqueror/Firefox/etc. Currently, IE is the most vulnerable and outdated browser you can choose.

That's it; nothing more. Just remember to to check for updates at least once a year, and you will have a trouble-free year in the deal. Above mentioned:

a) Patch the common vulnerabilities in your OS and browser, thus preventing automatic infections.
b) Keep everything out, and make sure that there isn't traffic without your permission.

Thank you for reading appendix 1 of "Internet for Dummies."
