Well, this existed.
You know, it's funny that this series aired along with Tachibanakan Triangle this same season, because they share a number of problems. Both have low production values and poor direction, both are really bad at characterization even when basically handling stereotypes, and both have absolutely no use being shorts. When I watched an episode of either I always wondered why they lasted 3 minutes (aside from relieving me from further suffering of course). They are clearly not set for this length. The episodes just shorten the actions and reactions to a point they don't have any way of engaging me as a viewer. It's a delivery that lacks enthusiasm, like it's more worried about cramming enough in 3 minutes than actually making this short length have a meaning or a purpose. I mean, I have my issues with Fumikiri Jikan and certainly more than my first impression expected, but if I compare with either of these it is miles above. The characters are episodic, and yet, I know more of a character who appeared in a single 3-minute episode than I do of the entire cast of these two. The direction is dynamic, it actually makes use of framing and visual language actively, to convey a message. The writing is set for its length, no more no less. Alice or Alice, regardless of my own dislike for a lot of themes it has, doesn't have an excuse to be this bad. It is just lazy and effortless, and that only damages it more. With that said, I found this series consistently cringey and embarrassing to watch. In that aspect it kind of stepped ahead of Tachibanakan Triangle, which is just regular bad and exploitative. But Alice or Alice instead was... jarring to watch. Like I wanted to punch the screen every time. It is cutesy to the most painfully obvious, shamelessly marketable and low common denominator level. It has attempts at comedy that fall completely flat because the series has zero confidence in its audience's ability to interpret and laugh by themselves, or rather because it has zero confidence in itself, and the jokes regardless of that are simply terrible. It is annoying and forced in its pandering, in its attempts to make things sweet, in its situations in general. Watching each episode made me feel uncomfortable and even disturbed. I can't emphasize well enough how much of a weekly disgrace this little show was to me. In fact, I'm giving it a lot more words than it deserves. After 12 episodes, I still ask myself why. |
