What are some good anime with characters who are sort of the ones who are 'next in line'? Sort of like Buffy, where she's the next Slayer, and when she dies, another is called, and so forth. I can think of Kamikaze Kaitou Jeanne, but what else is there?

Mai HIME, Pretear, Mai Otome, Kannaduki no Miko all fit this mold in some way. To lesser degrees you have SaiKano and SaiKano: Another Love Song, Ikkitousen, the Full Metal Panic series (in regards to the Whispered), Chrono Crusade, Jubei-Chan the Ninja Girl series, and the Blue Seed series.

All of these have similar to what you're looking for, sometimes the main characters, sometimes it's the underlying story of things...but for the most part, there are lineage-style undertakings.

For example, think of Pretear just like Buffy, but without the vampires and general Hell spawn :P

Ack, forgot to mention Pretear...thanks. Do we see/hear of any of the other Pretears in the series?

You hear of several, but only get to meet one during the course of the series.

DarkCntry's and Jedinat's choices are great but some additions are
Gantz - people die and are replaced all the time
Princess Tutu - reincarnation (best series after full moon wo sagashite ever)
Revolutionary Girl Utena - duels to take over the rose bride and if lose replaced by winner
CardCaptor Sakura - just like buffy but way cuter
Fruits Basket - a curse within the family of animals of the chinese zodiac that if one of them dies a new family member will have the curse

Well Im not sure what type of genre you want but I mainly listed shoujo except Gantz. Hope that helps

Okusama wa Maho Shojo - since Ureshiko get married so someone was appointed to take her place as manager of the wonderland.
