Been a pretty mediocre couple of seasons really.

Kure-nai is perhaps the best (unlicensed) series of the last few seasons (imo)

yeah, which genre do you prefer though?

as for recommendations for hidden gems... I'd go for:

Natsume Yuujinchou - the only anime I know of that has a similar feeling to Mushishi, but different in that it is much more related to our real world, and has many more funny moments. A wonderful anime to watch for peaceful yet emotionally evocative moments.

Natsu no Sora - mixing magic and the modern, a slice of life anime that explores human lives from the perspective of a country, shy yet determined girl.

Putting personal preferences aside (since I don't know what you like anyway) I'd say take a look at Kurenai, Daughter of Twenty Faces and Kaiba which were/are the three best series of the spring season.
- Any ideas how to fill this space?

I can't tell you which were or weren't hidden, but the best shows that have aired/are airing this year are Spice and Wolf, Shigofumi, Kure-nai, Kaiba, Bounen no Xamdou, and Birdy the Mighty Decode

Pretty vague, everyone has different taste...esp. with the gems. They lack universal appeal, which is why they usually stay undiscovered.

I really like character driven anime, so I suggest:
Shigofumi, Mahou Tsukai ni Taisetsu na Koto

This year?
The previous recommendations of Kurenai, Nijuu Mensou no Musume (Daughter of Twenty Faces), and Shigofumi I can second. I'm looking into Kaiba myself as well.

I'll also add Kara no Kyoukai, a set of seven movies (three have been released on DVD and subbed) based on Type-Moon's work.

Not very recent, but I recommend Gargoyle of the Yoshinagas.
