Very interesting premise and it has a staff behind that lives in a different realm to the typical otaku one that we're used to.

It's already been licensed in the UK, which is nice.

I kept wondering why this sounded familiar, then I realised the manga was mentioned in a chapter of Kingyo Used Books, the manga about a second hand manga store which only got four volumes translated in English because the rights issues were immense.

It definitely sounds interesting, and if it's coming out here then I'd be liable to get it just to encourage this sort of thing!

A fictional recounting of Hokusai's life? This could be good, as long as they don't make his 'daughter' too shrill and annoying.

Nobody is talking about the most important element of this film, which is Hara being the director. The guy is the silent genius of anime - both "Koo" and "Colorful" are masterpieces, and the latter is among the greatest animated films ever made in any language. I'm excited to see him working with I.G..

Licensed in France as well by eurozoom, they've picked up rights for theatrical distribution this summer, there's talk of it being shown at the annecy film festival but nothing confirmed yet.

Colorful won the top prize at Anency, didn't it? I think France appreciates Hara more than Japan does.

Was already interested long before the trailer, but this truly looks fantastic. Also means it'll be largely ignored by the otaku population at large.

The trailer didn't do anything for me either way, since it was just a collection of random scenes. I like the art, though, so that's a start.

LOL, so O-Ei will be sort of deadpun sneaker. I though the MC is more Yamato Nadeshiko-like. But that's even better

I've seen the movie and enjoyed it a lot. I see criticism that it's just a string of unrelated incidents, but I differ: I think they all go to develop Oei's character. I grew fonder and fonder of her as time went on.

She is not a character I've seen before. The spinsterish heroine who is weak yet strong, cool yet warm. Her attempts to learn how to get along with men were touching, as was her desperate attempt to learn sensuality, for the sake of her art. Her relationship with her sister brought tears to my eyes. And Hokusai himself was portrayed well, as dedicated to his art and his own ability, quite selfish, but also loving toward his daughters, in his gruff and awkward way.

And the scenes of Edo-period life were good, too. Almost possible to imagine living in such a situation.

Definitely worth seeing, if you like a quiet, sad character study, leavened with gentle humour.

Saw it at the TIFF just right now, and...

I... don't get it? I mean, besides them killing the imouto so that winter scene with the boy was so pointless, they also introduced 2 (or 3 if you really count ZenZero) potential LIs that never did amount to anything. Not one of them even contributed to her growth as an artist either (actually ZenZero did but neither him nor her are interested in the other), so what was the point? If this was based on a true historical figure, they already made liberties with the supernatural aspects, so why not cut out these LIs and have more supernatural like stories?

Maybe I'm just too entrenched in the moe standard of anime that I just can't seem to enjoy 'regular movies', but my brother who's a film addict wasn't enthralled with it either. Miss Hokusai just seemed too disjointed for me to ever really enjoy.

On the bright side, the English VA for Oei was AMAZING. Her Kaori (from Your Lie in April) sounded TOO mature at times, but she was perfect for someone older like Oei. I'm a bit worried since she's Futaba in Persona 5, but at least Erica Lindbeck showed up for this movie.
