Winter 2009 Anime Review Thread: Post Your Opinion and Grade

Like we've done in previous seasons, list any Winter 2009 anime that you've seen, talk about why you like (or dislike) it, and give it a grade. Winter 2009 refers to anime which begun airing in late December, January, February and March.

For a reference of which anime are airing in the above said timespan, you may refer to this thread: Winter 2009: Your Expectations and Anticipated Series

This is an example of a format you might use:

Title: Title of anime i.e. Minami-ke Okaeri
Rating: A+ - F scale, i.e. D+ or C or B-
Episodes Viewed: Episodes you have seen. i.e. 1 - 3
(Mini-Review goes here. i.e. Insert your comment here)

Akkikan: Grade: F If you take it seriously. Maybe a C for enertainment value of sheer stupid novelty and absurdity.

Its horrible, but funny, simply because of how stupid idea and ridiculous the whole premise is. I'll watch until it gets old.

Asu no Yoichi: Grade: B

I like the style of comedy of the series a lot, thus the high grade despite how generic the plot is. I'll watch if they can keep up the level of comedy from the first episode, and if they can actually make a good plot out of what looks to be a very generic one.

Black God: Grade: C+

Interesting first episode, but I'm not really sure what to think. There was a cool fight scene and some WTF moments. I'll watch it for now to see where they take it.

Chrome Shelled Regios: Grade: C

Good action, interesting setting, seems like a solid action/fantasy series. I'll give it a couple episodes at least.

Clannad After story: Grade: B+

Its had some ups and downs, but Clannad's still going strong and I'll watch till the end. This recent one was the best episode so far.

Girl who leapt through space: Grade: C+

I liked the lead and the setting, and Lelouch as the colony AI was great. Not sure if I'll watch this till completion.

Hajime no Ippo: New Challenger: Grade: A+

Ippo's my 6th favorite anime series. This did not dissappoint. The shower scene was an odd choice to include in the first episode of a new season though. I've been going nuts at how long it was taking this to air. I'm absolutely excited for Takamura vs Hawk.

Michiko + Hatchin: Grade: C+

Michiko has been a pretty solid series so far. Nothing particually amazing, but its been pretty enertaining.

Toradora: Grade: A

I've been loving Toradora. It has one of my favorite casts in a long time. I liked JC Staff's take on the spinoff chapter.

Grade: B-

One of the best episodes so far. This series has a weird charm to it. It took forever to get moving, but watching Tytania discuss things over tea has been weirdly enertaining.

White Album:
Grade: C-

Slow first episode, but set up for some interesting potential drama. I found the second episode kind of boring, but again, we've got some more set up which could be good. I'll give it a couple more episodes to hook me. Slow drama series like tend to be hit or miss with me.

I'm just trying stuff out. I doubt I'll stick with all of these series to the end.

To me, this format is very easy to do and very easy to understand. If you want to use it, copy and paste the following and add ]

White Album----interesting start, hope for more
Hajime no Ippo: New Challenger-----new Ippo, always liked the first one
Sora wo Kakeru Shoujo--------weird and interesting start....want more!
Chrome Shelled Regios-----great start thus far

Minami-ke Okaeri-----more of the same in the third season
Asu no Yoichi!-----an okay start

Akikan! (DROPPED).....bad bad bad

Ride Back: Grade A-

Damn. I wasn't expecting this to be so awesome. This will probably be my favorite show this season thats not Ippo, Slayers, or Toradora.

Title: Ride Back
Rating: A
Episodes Viewed: 1
Incredible first episode. It is the first time in a long while that I've gotten excited about an anime.

Title: Maria-sama ga Miteru 4th
Rating: A-
Episodes Viewed: 2
I've nothing to complain about so far. Looks like Yumi will finally choose an imouto! (I will be sorely disappointed if she doesn't choose Touko... but I really don't see how she could not.)

Title: Zoku Natsume Yuujinchou
Rating: B+
Episodes Viewed: 1
More of the same, which is good.

Title: Asu no Yoichi!
Rating: B-
Episodes Viewed: 1
Looks like it might entertain me more than usual for an anime of its type.

Most of the others I've dropped...

My first thoughts.

There are, IMO, two particularly intriguing titles, and the rest are hit-or-miss. It's a fairly standard season, a few goodies, a few not-so. Lots of sequels, though, which has pretty much become staple of recent.

Among the anime that fight for my attention, let's start with the dead and heavily wounded.

White Album (2 eps), probability that I finish this: 0 percent (dropped)
Dropped for being what it is: triangle/harem melodrama. With idols. Nothing more nothing less. I'd watch White album if it was the only anime of the season.

Akikan (1.25 eps), probability that I finish this: 0 percent (dropped)
This is totally random even for ecchi comedy standards and has no charm at all that would let me make an exception to my general drop rule. I'd watch Akikan if you paid me.

Maria Holic (1.25 eps), probability that I finish this: 0 percent (dropped)
I skipped half of the second episode and paid only half attention, thus it counts only as a quarter of an episode watched. I can't really draw amusement from people being bullied. Or from maids. I'd watch Maria Holic if you paid me ... but you don't have that much money.

Koukaku no Regios (2 eps): 10 percent
Main character is a Mary Sue if there ever was one and the instant harem is only a symptom to that fact. Furthermore, the scenario is uninspired and all over the place but this is a rule of the genre so I'm probably just being unfair. I'll give it one more episode and I don't even know why.

Asu no Yoichi (2 eps): 20 percent
Somehow I thought this is about kendo but it's about samurai with wooden swords. Anyway, compared to Maria Holic, Akikan and Koukaku no Regios the male lead is actually likable and funny (is winter 2009 the season of the jerks?), but that won't carry my interest much further. Two more eps maybe?

The drops and near-drops all lie in or close to the 4D space spanned by harem, sudden girlfriend appearance, ecchi, and romance melodrama. A familiar pattern ...

Sora o Kakeru Shoujo (2 eps): 50 percent

Oh, I don't know. It seems I get a remarkably small fraction of the references because I watch the wrong shows. That should serve as a warning. On the other hand, there was nothing really annoying so far.

Kurokami (2 eps): 60 percent
Another shounen action show but of the better ones. If it's only 13 eps long I give it even more than 60 percent, if it's longer I might run out of steam.

The anime with the freaking long title reflected in the eyes of an otaku with a short attention span (1 eps - and the full OVA): 80 percent.
Aka Munto TV. Well, since it's starts with the OVA I've seen at least 4 eps already. It looks like one of those anime that will never become my favorite but remain entertaining enough not to drop it. Not stellar but safe.

Ride Back: (1 ep) 80 percent
This might become one of my favorites. It's much better than Munto so far but seems harder to predict so it gets "only" 80 percent too. Oh, and the background story makes no sense, so yes, I am unfair (see Koukaku no Regios above).

Shikabane Hime: Kuro: (1 ep) 80 percent
80 percent is actually low for a sequel I decide to watch. But my interest declined already during Aka and while I think that I'll finish this I won't rule out a drop either.

Minami-ke Okaeri: (2 eps) >90 percent
A more typical number for a sequel. It's already my favorite comedy of the season. Hyakko was better though.

Tetsuwan Birdy Decode 2: (1 ep) >90 percent
Another sequel, another safe bet.

Zoku Natsume Yuujin-Chou: (2 eps) >90 percent
And another.

I'm still waiting for ...

Kemono no Souja Erin: (1 ep raw) -
Has the potential to become a favorite. I hope SS and or that Alex(?) group will really sub it. Otherwise I'll watch the raw.

Slayers Evolution-R: (1 ep raw) -
Contact to the hostage remains difficult. The hostage-taker who identified himself only as "Funi" demands 500 million Yen, the pantsu of Megumi Hayashibara and a getaway car. More at 11. Anonymous to the rescue ... or more raws to watch.

Viper`s Creed: (1 ep raw) -
Kemono no Souja Erin has little girls and 50 epsiodes, Slayers has Funi, so I'm not surprised that it hasn't been subbed rightaway. But this one? It's probably that it's an original work and lacks a solid base of rabid fans (who'd later complain about the inferiority of the adaption of course). Maybe not bad but I don't feel tempted to watch it raw.

Oh, and what is Examurai Sengoku?

If I haven't forgotten anything that's all I wanted to watch (out of the TV series' that is).
- Any ideas how to fill this space?

I will update this later!

Maria-sama ga Miteru 4th Season: A-
Episodes Seen: 1
While its animation quality not as good as the previous seasons, at least its story is about the same. In fact its great. I will give an A+ if its animation quality will be "repaired" in later episodes.

Minami-ke Okaeri: B
Episodes Seen: 1
Still made by the same studio that made the second season. Fortunately it turns out much better than I thought, at least better than its second season but not as good as the first one. The scriptwriters and the director should make better jokes someday.

Maria+Holic: E
Episodes Seen: 1 (dropped)
This show just plain horrible, maybe I put too many hope on it since I thought this will be a yuri show but unfortunately for me it is an anti-yuri show instead. I also never consider seeing someone get bullied as "entertainment", let alone as "anime". I also puzzled who's the target audience of this show anyway? Obviously not yuri fanboys unless they want to get pissed at first place.

In alphabetical order:
Akikan! -- watched the 1st five minutes of this huge pile of crap, the only positive was that the file deleted quickly. The description "Akikan (”Empty Can”) is the unlikely story of high school boy Kakeru Daichi, whose can of melon juice soda magically transforms into a human girl. Naturally, more “akikan” girls begin appearing, each of them needing to be infused with carbon dioxide from kissing to survive." did not give me much hope going into the series. I usually avoid the harem, sudden girlfriend appearance, ecchi and near porn shows I should have done so with this pile of dung.
Grade: F

Asu no Yoichi! -- Wow what an attempt to get every topic that only a hard core anime fan would ever care to see in one show. I was expecting to see a giant robot to pop out of no where with no real reason.
Grade: C

Birdy the Might DECODE:02 -- I liked the first season and the second season seems to be going well.
Grade B+

Chrome Shelled Regios -- Character originality is not this shows strong point neither is plot, art, animation, soundtrack or voice acting. It does have lots of action.
Grade D-

Genji Monogatari Sennenki -- So far very different in a good way, beautiful art with a fantastic use of colors. Some use of poetry and you have an anime like no other on the air right now.
Grade: A-

Kemono no Souja Erin: Nice concept, nice art, nice animation and a good job putting it all together, but the key is nice...not great
Grade B-

Minami-ke Okaeri -- Loved the first season, liked the second season, and I am liking the third one so far. I hope the downward trend does not continue.
Grade B

Ride Back -- So far the highlight of the season, other then the continuing of Casshern Sins
Grade: A

White Album -- Was hoping that this was more then what most descriptions were hinting at, but it was not. Plot seemed overly generic but the characters were good so it is not a complete loss
Grade: C-

Zoku Natsume Yuujinchou: I liked the first season and the second season seems to be going well.
Grade B+

Viper`s Creed -- Ghost in the Shell meets Patlabor, not a bad marriage, not going to rack as good as either of those series but a solid way to pass some time. Not sure why no public fansub group has worked on this show.
Grade B+

Still need to watch
Kurokami The Animation -- art work not my cup of tea, but I'll give it a Look
Afro Samurai Resurrection -- Samuel L. Jackson chopping peoples heads off, and making love to the ladies how can you go wrong.

Munto (2 Episodes) - Feels so.... average?
Grade: C+

Ride Back (2 Episodes) - I do not know if I am going to keep watching this, the main character has not been so interesting to me so far.
Grade: B-

White Album (4 Episodes) - Like the characters, like the style, has a good soundtrack, so it should be something to entertain me this season.

good > mediocre > bad
  • Minami-ke Okaeri (just the life of 3 sisters, dont expect much, watched 4 Eps)
Its a sequel, I guess its a little better then the 2nd but the jokes are fully reaching me.

  • Akikan! (didnt bother)
    Girls from soda? no thanks.

  • Genji Monogatari Sennenki (30 frames per episode?!, watched 1/2 Ep)
Some people see great color and animation I see 1 frame/minute, dialog that can put you to sleep and a plot of never ending boredom.

  • Kemono no Souja Erin (didnt bother)

  • Munto (there are islands in the sky?!, watched 3 Eps)
That old school fantasy style hit me like a rock, in a good way.

  • Rideback (girls on motorcycles, nuff said, watched 3 Eps)

  • Sora Kake Girl (action and stupidity!, watched 5 Eps)
The show doesnt take itself very seriously but overall its a very nice action fiction.

  • White Album (didnt bother)
Possible washy harem or shool days, seen enough of them lately.

  • Kurokami (didnt bother)
Read the manga, from what I'm reading the male lead is just as much of a ass in the anime.

  • Hajime no Ippo: New Challenger (didnt bother)

(to be completed when I bother with the rest)

And a lurker pops out of the ground.

6 episodes = C
I know how horrendous the art is (or will be... *shudder*), but the toilet humor and... well, the art itself, really, make this one funny anime.
I don't know if this is a good sign, but I laughed throughout the latest episode.

Sora o Miageru whatever/Munto TV
3 episodes = C+
Honestly, Munto just gives me "average" vibes.
I can't see anything outstanding about the anime.
Plus the difference in the art in the opening and in the actual anime is so striking.
It's like "Here, look at this fancy lobster. Now eat this raw potato."

5 episodes = C
I'm not just giving Cs because that's what they do 'in my homeland of Egypt.'
The first thing I felt after watching five minutes of this was "Shana -loli" ... but I hadn't felt any failure emanating from it yet.
Once I hit episode 3, my jaw hung open for days. I couldn't believe how badly done episode 3 was, from the animation (monkey swinging arms = teacher attacking Kuro) to the music (wtfnomusic at one point) to the plot ("Teacher! Stop!" "Hold up, let me beat your friend up first!"), etc.

2 episodes = D
I really hate this show, for no specific reason.
Everything about it just doesn't strike me as good.
Baby Italy wasn't really cute to me; I felt like I was wasting my time.
Germany vs. the box wasn't humorous to me.

I feel like I picked the wrong anime to watch this season.

To-watch for Winter '08-'09:
  • Sora wo Kakeru Shoujo
  • Okaeri once I finally get down to finishing Okawari
  • Maria-sama
  • Possibly Ride Back
I've heard so many good things about Hajime no Ippo, but it's not my style.

You are not alone, I also thought it was complete crap from start to end.
  • Chrome Shelled Regios (defeat the bug!, watched 5 Eps)
Like what had expected after reading the manga, its over complicated. But while the un-explained things ruin the excitment for me, its still a intresting show.

White Album - I found this anime to be especially slow to start, not to mention that the plot seem very cliche of what I've seen so far. However, it isn't bad or anything, just nothing new so far. Will probably stick around for at least a while longer
Grade: C

Druaga no Tou : Sword of Uruk - Surprisingly to me, gonzo's doing a good job with the second season. The first season was funny at times but rather mediocre, so hopefully the good start of is a sign of more to come. Looking forward to the rest of this.
Grade: B

Rideback - Very interesting sotry line and probably the most promising when coming to new anime this season. Will be sticking around till the end.
Grade: A

Akikan - Watched only the beginning of the first episode. Seriously, the only good thing was that I could laugh at how stupid the story line was. Not worth the watch at all.
Grade: F-

Clannad After Story - I'm enjoying watching this emotional rollercoaster. From laughter to tears in the span of a single episode. Will finish most likely
Grade: B

Toradora! - Probably one of my favorites of all time. I'd put it in my top 5 of anime I've ever watched. Truly a comedy/drama worth watching!
Grade: A+

Ratings: 1-5 5 being awesome. I'm up to date on all series.

Akikan! - .5 pure crap.... that's all that really needs to be said.

Asu no Yoichi! - 3 not overly sure why i'm enjoying this one as i'm not one for harem anime normally. but it caught me with the first ep and i've been loving it since

Birdy the Might DECODE:02 - 4 ahhh birdy. it's awesome to see a continuation of this series. the OVA was so much fun and it was a shame the way they left it. This new one is really fun though and goes into a bit more depth.

Chrome Shelled Regios - 4 the use of electronic music is interesting to me. and the story is interesting enough to keep me watching

Druaga no Tou: Sword of Uruk - 3 i quickly watched S1 once i heard a S2 was coming for this and it was a fun ride that continues nicely. there are so many parodies in it it's almost hard to catch them.

Genji Monogatari Sennenki - 3 lovely animation and the story is griping and keeping me interested despite it being about romance

Hetalia Axis Powers - 4 haha this one is hilarious. the world in chibi form LOL what's not to giggle at there

Kemono no Souja Erin - 4 simply beautiful. makes me think of the 12 kingdoms with the animation. the creatures are amazing.

Kurokami - 3.5 blood is awesome. and this anime has a good chunk of it. with a girl that gets beaten up a lot and a guy that isn't a total pussy for once. it's fun.

Maria-sama ga Miteru 4th Season - 3 more fun with the sisters. fun to make me sleepy as it is kinda boring at times but at least it's nothing as boring as season 3

Maria†Holic - 2.5 cute for a laugh but nothing overly jumps out at me. it's to cliche i suppose

Munto TV - 1 i was hoping this would be better than the OVA's but sadly i was mistaken. Maybe with more eps...yeah that must be it...

Ride Back - 2.5 i was expecting a little more. but it still has time to improve

Shikabane-hime Kuro - 3.5 another lovely follow up to the season before. i like the thought of dead people killing other dead people for a punishment and when they do enough of the killing they get to go to heaven or whatever. interesting lol

Sora wo Kakeru Shoujo - 1 i love sci-fi but this one is just terrible... the girls are annoying and i'm not sure what's going on cause i can't even remember what it's really about because it's that forgettable.

White Album - 2 ummm... pretty meh. ep 2 i think had like 10 min of just talking on the phone... and i don't get what's with the floating words. I assume something to do with manga or internal thought...

Zoku Natsume Yuujinchou - 5 lovely follow up to the first season. wonderful animation and i just love that fat cat!!

Ongoing from last season:
Toradora! - 3 neither love or hate this. it's a interesting story but that's all it has going for me.

Tytania - 5 best anime to be airing right now imo. i can't wait for each ep to come out week after week. I love space drama's a lot :P

Kurogane no Linebarrels - 2 bleh... the first ep was terrible. the main character redeemed himself briefly then it turned to crap again....

Casshern Sins - 3 I can't help but think it's so emo. walking around being like ohhh how did this happen, it's all my fault, why can't i remember. but it's a nice follow up to the original and the animation is weird yet intriguing.

One Outs - 3 I hate baseball but I'm still watching this.. I'm drawn to it because i like the characters... or maybe it really is just the pretty drawn boys and awesome soundtrack...

Kuro Shitsuji - 4 simply hilarious. slow at times but who wouldn't want a butler like that!

Skip Beat! - 3.5 very funny and a cute slice of life story. some of the things that the main girl does is pure genius!

Tales of the Abyss - 3.5 I haven't played the game or anything but i'm still enjoying the story. The main character gets annoying at times
