Anime/manga where you feel bad for the hero

I'm looking for an anime or manga where the hero gets put into situations where you feel so sorry the hero and your heart really goes out to him. The hero has to be someone who's a good guy that just has bad luck or the world is against him.

But I'm not looking to pity him! What I mean is, I don't want to feel sorry for a hero simply because he's pathetic, one of those heroes who's meek, shy, and gets bullied or something like that. I don't want that, I can't stand those types of protagonists.

A perfect example of what I'm looking for is Angel Densetsu. The protagonist in there is a really good guy with a heart of gold, but everyone hates/fears him because of how he looks. Naruto, in the very beginning, is also a good example, how all of Konoha hated him.

The most hardcore characters of that kind are Akabara Strauss from Vampire Juuji kai and the two heroes from Zetman. They are both manga, and be warned, the latter is 18+ and contains strong violence and gore.
From anime you could try D.Gray-man, Black Cat and Casshern SINS.

Umm... maybe the old man in Sumire 16. He is sort of the main character, lol, and gets abused, misunderstood, beat up... simply because he has a life-size teenage girl doll and attends high school with it, and makes it act exactly like a high school girl might act. I mean what's wrong with that? Poor guy...

How about Code Geass R2?
A lot of bad things happen to Lelouch there. One could almost feel sorry for that guy...

I think Inuyasha would fit the bill perfectly.

Berserk, Gantz, Battle Royale, Battle Angel Alita.
All of them great manga, all of them with ultra violence and tragic heroes.

Seirei no Moribito certainly fits, from the perspective of Chagum as the hero (which he is, from a dramatic standpoint).

Dr. Tenma from Monster fits this description as does Nina Fortner in that show. Youko in Twelve Kingdoms also finds herself thrust into a difficult situation. She's not a very sympathetic character at the outset but becomes one as the story unfolds.

Noein's Haruka bears the fate of multiple dimensions on her twelve-year-old shoulders.

Tamaya Seikichi of Oh! Edo Rocket is the target of state-sponsored repression because he dares to fire off skyrockets in defiance of the Shogunate's ban on public entertainments.

Ode to Kirihito (manga) came to mind immediately, heh. It's really quite dark though and has a typical Tezuka non-ending

Deadman Wonderland comes to mind.
At the start it feels like the main character suddenly thrown to the worst possible fate ever, it makes me wonder how it will end...

Kira from Gundam Seed fits this IMO, especially the first 20-30 episodes.

Doesn't get any worse than when you know that all the main characters are definitely going to off it, one by one. And they're only kids, albeit pretty screwed up kids.

What about Hayate no Gotoku?:

Though abandoned by his parents and cursed with bad luck, Hayate perseveres,
lands a job as a butler, and has many (mis)adventures.

I kind of understand what you mean.... some of my suggestions would be:

Saikano - There was never a romance more miserable, sad and bitter sweet than this one It makes you wanna smack those couples in romance / slice of life that takes 10 episodes to say " i love you" >.<

Fate Stay Night - Only the ending fits what you are looking for but it definitly is worth it.... Fantasy / action / romance anime.

Kure-nai - You cant do anything but feel for the little murasaki when you see how fucked up (coudnt think of something else that fits better..) the family she was born in is...

Tsubasa Chronicle - "During an excavation at the mysterious ruins in Clow Country, Syaoran discovers his childhood friend Princess Sakura appear on the site with wings that disperse into many feathers. As the feather’s disappear to different dimensions, so does Sakura’s memory. In attempts to save Sakura’s life and restore her memory, Syaoran travels through to another world to find a solution."

well it does fit from your description but i dont think this anime was meant for you to "feel sorry" for hayates daily life and more like "laugh" at it xD
