The black bars usually happen when the DVD is in a "widescreen" aspect ratio, but the display is not. If the aspect ratio is 16:9 (1.78:1), it should fill the all or most of the screen of a computer with a widescreen display. Some displays are 16:10, so they may show thin black bars top and bottom with a 16:9 image.

If the DVD is in the 2:35:1 aspect (movies like Star Wars, for instance), you should see black bars top and bottom on any type of screen.

If the display itself is in the 4:3 aspect ratio, all widescreen content will have black borders.
