The anime focuses on badminton players on a corporate team, with characters who work at a day job in a company and also play badminton. The story centers on Mikoto Shiratori, a childhood prodigy at badminton, but who never recovered from a major loss during a high school competition. Now, he works in the sales department of the Sunlight Beverage company, playing badminton on the side.

I liked episode one. I hope they will do more animations of the rallies, the few that they showed were pretty good, but of course we are shown the angle with the character hitting the shuttle most of the time, not the full court viewpoint. One thing I liked was showing some of the footwork, and the transition to backhand. I hope there won't be too many "super powers", because having good game sense, and reading the other player is not super special, but can be learned.
Story wise, I'm digging it. As others have posted, its about adults playing sports, which breaks the over done middle/high school setting so many other sports anime focus on. They definitely parodied some of the Japanese companies. Sunlight is Suntory, Tomari is Tonami, Unisics is Unisys, Mitsuhoshi Bank is ??? This will be an interesting insight into the Japanese corporate sports world, as some, if not all of the badminton athletes of the Japanese National Team are employed by some of these companies as part of their "day job". I would also not be too surprised if they pulled some characteristics from select players like Yuta Watanabe, Kento Momota etc. |

Maybe you're referring to Mizuho Financial Group?

I finally got around to watching Castlevania, and ended up watching the Japanese dub simply because he voiced Alucard. The rest of of the Japanese dub cast was great to though. I was just coming to ask if this was a thing. Having your players do double duty like with Sunlight seems like it could be stressful for the players though.

The animation was a let-down for me, felt it dropped a notch or two compared to the pilot.
Having stills during a match of a sports anime? The idea of dropping this crossed my mind a few times during the first set of doubles. Giving this a couple more eps.

Yay for episode 2! Badaryman rules will always be sacred and followed.
It's too bad the car got damaged. Looked like a good car, so hopefully that relationship isn't soured too much. As a badminton player, I'm going to be critical of the animation and scenes. There were a lot of still shots and awkward looking poses/footwork shown. We didn't get any real fluidity compared to episode 1. The only real fluid animation were the jump smashes, which was just really repeated a lot. We really only get the characters in action shots (i.e. showing one side most of the time), instead of the full court of 2 or 4 players moving at the same time. I hope what we saw this episode won't be the norm when it comes to showcasing badminton. I would really like to see sequences of plays and full rallies to some extent. Also, every shot sounds the same! Badminton is full of intrigue. There's power, speed, finesse, and deception. All of these game traits translate to different ways the racket hits or slices the shuttle. Which means the sounds of these shots are different. Some are sharp, some are soft, others loud and snappy etc. Tactics wise, it was great to show their partnership develop and support each other, although this near "super power" is really just astute game sense. I don't really buy it, but hey, if he's really that good at predicting moves and limiting his opponent's options, then for the sake of the story, I'll give that to him. The explanation scene gave me a nice chuckle when he grabbed most of the snacks before his partner could get to them. The Unisys team was full of intrigue. Some of them get carried away, but are brought back down to earth. I suppose because it's a reflection of the corporate sports structure, and the fact that they are mostly adults that there's less of the shonen super ego character traits, and more of a realistic and respectful approach to the opposition (the Unisys pair played at a higher level in the 3rd game). Ending scene was nice. That was probably his old partner. |

A lot of anime (well, not a lot, but some) try for that "guys just being guys" vibe, but it's almost always too mannered and affected to really be authentic. It's working very well here. I also like that the series had enough confidence to do an episode without sports so early on (though I suppose that helps with the animation budget, too).
