Bungou Stray Dogs [Anticipation]

Manga 'Bungou Stray Dogs' is getting an anime adaptation.

Plot Summary:
Quote:
Nakajima Atsushi was kicked out of his orphanage, and now he has no place to go and no food. While he is standing by a river, on the brink of starvation, he rescues a man whimsically attempting suicide. That man is Dazai Osamu, and he and his partner Kunikida are members of a very special detective agency. They have supernatural powers, and deal with cases that are too dangerous for the police or the military. They're tracking down a tiger that has appeared in the area recently, around the time Atsushi came to the area. The tiger seems to have a connection to Atsushi, and by the time the case is solved, it is clear that Atsushi's future will involve much more of Dazai and the rest of the detectives!
Director will be Takuya Igarashi
Studio: BONES

No surprise... I tried reading the manga, but all along I had the feeling of "they're really shooting for a TV anime here" and "I'd like this so much more if it was an anime". With it being anime now, hopefully I'll enjoy it more.

I've never heard of Bungou's mangaka, Asagiri Kafka, before. Is he or she very popular?

Asagiri Kafka is the writer. Bungou Stray Dogs is I think his (I think he's a guy) first published work, before that he did a relatively popular doujin project at Niconico, I think?

The mangaka is Harukawa Sango, dunno if they're male or female. As far as I'm aware Bungou Stray Dogs is their first published manga, otherwise they did some illustrations...

(Actually, now that I think about it all this might just explain why the manga felt so peculiarly gimmicky...)

For those unfamiliar with Japanese literature outside LNs, this is the equivalent of having F. Scott Fitzgerald, Ernest Hemingway, Raymond Chandler and Emily Dickinson as superpowered detectives.

This sounds interesting. With Bones here the visuals are at least guaranteed to be good. The premise is a bit intriguing. Will look out for this one.

Too bad that as far as I read it didn't really do anything particularly interesting with it, even though the special abilities and character quirks like Dazai Osamu's suicide mania were fun. But again, maybe it will be better in anime.

ETA:
Wait, what, it's Igarashi Takuya AND Enokido Youji? OK, sign me up, I'm in! This is guaranteed to be, at the very least, fun.

Did not know characters were named after 20th century Japanese authors.

Researching the names, it seems the real Dazai Osamu had suicide mania too. He had depression and tried to kill himself multiple times over the course of his life. He succeeded in 1948, aged 39.

Hmm...well...my interest is picqued at least. Willing to give it a try if nothing else...maybe the pv will help. I have only heard of the title - I do not recall ever giving it a try.

I should mention Fitzgerald, Hemingway and other western writers show up with super powers as well.

Yuto Uemura? Yu Shimamura? Kensho Ono?

LITERARY REFERENCES? (Though I know nothing about Japanese literature, grrr...)

I'm interested, at the very least, and cautiously hopeful. The writer and director don't exactly inspire confidence- I disliked Star Driver, found Captain Earth to be only a marginal improvement over SD, and have never watched Utena- but this is an adaptation, so who knows.

Did you like Ouran Host Club? Because these two did the Ouran Host Club anime, and it was not only great but lightyears better than the manga. I hope that's going to happen here, too - the manga didn't grab me, but the anime might just.
