Episode 1:
Good episode overall, a lot of darker themes with the setting. What I like about this is how the episode really made the rivalry with revenge and hate themes. The violence is realistic too although I think it gave a good insight about the setting. Usage of the soundtrack is nice with the eerie atmosphere it gives off, especially the ED theme song.

Very good, I love the tone and all the characters so far.
Unfortunately all of the character have obvious death flags. Every time Corelo said they were brothers and the he hoped to go to school, I just knew he wasn't long for this world. Angelo is obsssed with revenge and you can understand his reasons. The music held traces of the Godfather theme, especially in the opening credits, which I must say, actually tricked me into thinking the episode was over. I was like, "There's more?!" And then smiled and settled in to get comfortable.

That was excellent.
Sure, it's going to be full of tragedy, the best Mafia shows are, and I also picked up the slight similarities to the Godfather theme in the late OP (which had me also thinking it was the end). If it keeps this up, could be a top show of the season. |

Great start. They certainty established the right atmosphere. I already get the feeling that this is going to end in a tragedy.
Angelo's desire for revenge could be his undoing, not to mention that he is slowly dragging Corelo into his plans. Corelo also keeps raising death flags too.

Yeah, this was one of the better shows this season, one that certainly came out of (mostly) nowhere. But I'll wait to see where it goes before starting the "best anime of the season" hype. (That's Bananya, anyway.) It's altogether pretty capable, not high budget but it's doing its best with what it has, and thank god Eguchi Takuya sounds better in the actual show than in the CM (but he likely recorded that line out of context, anyway so I hope he just didn't find the correct voice at the moment). Let's just see if the staff brings something interesting to the table.
One thing that kept bothering me, though, was Fango, the animation's limits were obvious with him. The character is obviously supposed to be flamboyant and animated, and Tsuda is doing the whole flamboyant character routine, but the animation can't catch up. Fango was so static, and it created a really distracting disconnect between sound and image. (While we're talking about mafia anime, my favorite is probably Gungrave. To the point where I kept expecting to hear Imahori Tsuneo's BGM in this show. Sure, the mafia part of Gungrave was basically Mob Drama 101, and the revenge part was marred by the "oh yes, this is supposed to be based on a game, here's some really awkward boss fights" thing, but Harry & Brandon were absolutely excellent and they not only saved the entire show but managed to elevate it.) |

Looks promising so far... Though I'll wait until the end of the series for a final verdict, since these things can end up either way. Angelo/Avilio looks like he's fallen deep into the pit of revenge. The fact that he's dragging his friend into it is certainly pointing to some cracks in his moral compass (if it isn't broken already, having stewed in revenge for seven years).
I agree with Irenesharda about the death flags. I'm predicting it now. 90% of the cast is going to hit the bucket by the end of this series. |

Good 1st episode. It does set the premise for a very promising storyline. Definitely will continue with this.
Feel sorry for his little brother. The kid was too young to realize the danger and just ran out. Edit: Some say that Corelos is waving a death flag but I think otherwise. I think Corelos will be the only one to survive but Angelo will most likely die while achieving his revenge.
