And Hanekawa was purrfect as usual. The "bakemono" aspect of her personality was quite apparent in this episode, despite her short screen time. In contrast, Senjougahara's lack of screen time was definitely noticeable. Cute though Hachikuji is, she's a poor match for Senjougahara's acidic wit and presence, which is palpable even when she's off-screen ("Put down the staplers, tsundere-chan!!!"). As things stand though, I increasingly suspect there won't be any romantic feelings between Araragi and Senjougahara, especially given what Araragi observed in his fast-forward monologue at the beginning of the episode. Quote:
It's also clear that Senjougahara possesses a great deal of pride that borders on outright snobbery. That's the root of her intense dislike for children — she doesn't know how to behave around them and, unlike Araragi and Hanekawa, she loathes interacting with them as equals. That would be "low-classed" behaviour far beneath her sense of dignity. Given her aloofness, it's hardly surprising that Araragi doesn't quite connect with her, let alone develop something more than friendship. Nonetheless, the show does enjoy teasing with us, what with the thumping of Araragi's heart as Hanekawa tried to put two-and-two together, and with the "lover" icon that appeared on his mobile while talking to Oshino. Meanwhile, it's interesting that — despite their dislike for each other — Hachikuji and Senjougahara have something in common: they both have a missing mother whom they long to meet. Or maybe that's the other reason for Senjougahara's instinctive hostility: she will not tolerate anyone sharing a common trait with her. Talking about hostility though, I don't understand why Hachikuji bit Araragi's hand. It was an unprovoked attack. Snails don't attack people, do they? If anything, they're more likely to die squishy deaths when someone accidentally steps on them... And, yeah, I don't get the punchline of Hachikuji's tongue-twister either. |

Senjougahara's amount of screen time was about right as she is not a "globally likeable" character but more an "acquired taste" character imo. She is also quickly becoming fanservice bait. In her case, less is more.

I noticed that there's no ending illustration in the sub I have (a mix of frostii, qq, gg) at least until episode 4. Not a problem because they can be easily found on the official website (with the extended previews) http://www.bakemonogatari.com/special/
someone please could tell who is the author for illustration for 2 (*_*) and 3? Anyway I collected them all from the raws. Last edited by Woland; 2009-07-29 at 05:47. |

Shaft is just pure enjoyment. Nothing compares.
On the conversation thus far: 1. Not really digging the 'brilliant writing' etc. comments, or interpretations of artistic meaning into the stylistic choices of the show. While some interesting points have been pointed out (the 'crab' and 'snail' symbolic imagery is especially apparent now that it's been pointed out), c'mon guys, it's not that deep (direction-wise)/subtle (writing-wise). 2. As much as Senjougahara brings to the show for me, I'm not liking the somewhat exaggerated fanboyism either. Again, she's not that hot/attractive (lol holy shit I am gonna get lynched for that--okay, okay, maybe she is :P). I am just not looking forward to prospective future whining from people who'll dump on any episode without much of her in it. 3. Um, the answer to Mayoi's 'mankind eats dreams' riddle seems pretty clear to me. Mayoi's just expressing a stereotypical sentiment of adults/grumpy old men/greedy corporations crushing the hopes and dreams of innocent children (etc. etc.), which is why Araragi responds "that's not clever at all". On the new OP: It's somewhat unsettling. On Nishio Ishin: This is actually a bit of a negative for me as I'm finding Medaka Box mediocre. On the ridiculous oversubbing: I usually associate gg with quality, but their ep1 seemed to suck. Minimal typesetting, and in comparison to qIIq's their wording felt significantly less natural. There were numerous (I suppose generally minor) differences in translation as well, though, which I've no idea about, so I ended up keeping both of them. Translation differences persist with ep2, though with the later episodes gg's got full typesetting now, and I've stopped noticing awkward wording. I am basically pretty damn confused about who I should archive, though. Frostii's come out with ep1 as well now, way too late to the party. I'm nearly tempted to download theirs as well, though, just to get one more perspective. Anybody got an opinion on this? I suppose who's got the most accurate translation is the most important thing. |
