I admit that I felt that the Book of Eibon Arc had a lot of potential that I now feel wasn't fully exploited. I was hoping that we'd get to see a lot more of each characters' darker sides and eventually see them descending dangerously close to insanity. That hasn't really happened tho.

They are stuck in a fucking book with little to almost no way to advance, the Book of Eibon isn't a big fortress like Arachnophobia, wich leaves less space for the surprise. Knowing this it's to be expected this current arc won't be as exciting as the Arachnophobia arc, but how is that going downhill? IMO things are building up nicely for a future big arc full of surprises. That said, the arc had interesting developments and is specially focusing on technician/weapon relationships, first with Maka/Soul, now with Kid/Liz/Patti.

The chapter was really good, btw. The highlight was the Thompson sisters.

That's a good point. I also feel like we've seen something completely new. Right now, we're seeing both Black*Star and Kid using the power of insanity but not becoming consumed by it at the same time. I say this because throughout the fight, Black*Star was fighting using the insanity, but despite that he was still able to maintain his own sense of self and eventually overcome it. The fact he was still dressed in black meant that he was still experiencing the effects of the insanity but all the while controlling it as he wished. It looks like Kid got to that stage as well thanks to Black*Star. It'll be interesting to see if either one can make use of this power outside of the book. Maka and Soul used the power against Arachne as well after all. The Black Blood is a catalyst for insanity as well after all, from what I understand.

Talking about Maka and Soul, I'm interested in knowing how their relationship will develop from now on. Their fight against Giriko exposed all their flaws.

Maka: Sucks at physical fight, can't handle her weapon properly, always has to rely on Soul in order to survive critical situations.

Soul: Can't fight by himself as a weapon, as Death Scythe he's still a noob.

The reason why they could defeat Arachne: She was a witch who relied mainly on insanity.

The reason why they were outwilled by Giriko: He's a weapon who relies on physical fighting style, or to put it bluntly, direct attacks.

Yeah, it will be very interesting.

Indeed. Maka has potential to be an excellent Meister, perhaps on equal footing as Stein, considering she's had the ability to see people's souls from the very beginning of the series. If she could take advantage of that talent, she could be capable of manipulating her souls wavelength to a great extent, making her a lot better in close combat.

As for Soul, he can't fight alone because he's a lot more accustomed to fighting with Maka. All he needs is training to make use of his own individual powers, and I'm sure he's got plenty of those now that he's a Death Scythe.

I disagree. Maka doesn't suck at physical fighting... How to you think she's been fighting all this time? She's the strongest known female meister for crying out loud (Patti might be better though but so far that's unconfirmed). That she was completely overpowered by Giriko means nothing. We are talking about someone who could have at least given Mifune and Mosquito a run for their money. Someone who despite knowing the density of the black bood was confident that he could decapitate Crona.

Soul can and does fight by himself. He's just not as good at that as Giriko and or Justin. But that's only to be expected is it not? Besides wouldn't it suck if Soul was stronger by himself than with Maka? I won't deny Soul's still a novice Death Scythe though.

The reason they beat Arachne was a) her madness triggered the black blood in Soul and b) leaving her physical body left her with too little physical attack power.

Again I disagree. Giriko was just that much stronger. If it wasn't for Giriko's torture, plans of torture, fantasies for torture and Soul's brand new Death Scythe ability. Giriko's golem alone would have done the trick.

@Orangejellosphere: I couldn't agree more!

Of course, I was just commenting about the development both Maka and Soul will undergo after their experience in the Envy chapter of the book. Maka needs to improve the handling of her weapon, while Soul needs to train his ass and grow as Death Scythe in order to fight against the likes of Giriko, Justin, etc. equally and by himself, and without relying on Maka

Warning: Long post with a simple, obvious point:

Come to think of it, it seems that there are more than a few weapons other than Soul who don't fight for themselves much or at all, contrary to the pros Justin and Giriko.

Soul Eater has transformed just his arm into the scythe's blade to prepare to fight Giriko and to futilely stab Free. At both of these incidences, he and Maka were in the midst of some circumstance which hindered their ability to work together or even get along well. Soul would much rather fight with Maka because it's better for both of them.
Soul felt particularly useless when Arachne paralyzed Maka. He wished he was more capable on his own so he could defend Maka in dire situations. The Little Demon offered his help to Soul so Soul could go with Black*Star to help Sid and Azusa on their mission to an Arachnophobia facility (Mifune was there.)
It seems that Soul intends to never use the black blood to make himself a stronger fighter as just a weapon. He and the Little Demon planned ahead of time to use Soul's piano against Giriko. This suggests Soul has a good handle on the black blood for now.

Death Scythe has been shown partially transformed. Being able to fight on your own probably isn't very important to him when he's Shinigami-sama's choice weapon and he has other powerful meisters around him like Stein. He may have been doing some sort of training just in case he's caught without a meister, but I doubt that would be important. Seems like he's mostly been sticking to business matters until his current trip with Marie, Stein, Tezca, and Enrique.

Azusa, also a death scythe hasn't shown any combat-related individual abilities. She was a pretty cool mission coordinator and super-scribe during the Witch's Research arc.

Marie could deliver a powerful punch to Justin by transforming part of her fist into part of her weapon form. That was just for personal satisfaction and the real fight started when Stein used her.

Giriko operates alone and only alone, apart from the use of his golem. Therefore, he is very skilled at fighting solo.

Justin also works only on his own with the exception of his recent collaboration with the Clown.

My point is that only the weapons that usually work alone are apt at working solo. Soul could still have a few surprises in store as a death scythe. I'm looking forward to it.

Not really; the chapter came out on the 11th or 12th.
Unless you mean too soon after the scanlation release of the previous chapter, in which case.... yeah.

The spoilers were completely inaccurate and delivered by someone who still didn't have the raw. But now I've read it I can say what to think: Absolutely awesome, what an epic way to finish the arc.

How in the world are the inaccurate? they are spot on. And they were delivered by a JAPANESE who have READ the chapter.

If you think it's an awesome way to finish an arc you should have thought the same with the spoilers, because the raw is only a extended version of it.
