I admit that I felt that the Book of Eibon Arc had a lot of potential that I now feel wasn't fully exploited. I was hoping that we'd get to see a lot more of each characters' darker sides and eventually see them descending dangerously close to insanity. That hasn't really happened tho.

They are stuck in a fucking book with little to almost no way to advance, the Book of Eibon isn't a big fortress like Arachnophobia, wich leaves less space for the surprise. Knowing this it's to be expected this current arc won't be as exciting as the Arachnophobia arc, but how is that going downhill? IMO things are building up nicely for a future big arc full of surprises. That said, the arc had interesting developments and is specially focusing on technician/weapon relationships, first with Maka/Soul, now with Kid/Liz/Patti.
The chapter was really good, btw. The highlight was the Thompson sisters. |

Maka: Sucks at physical fight, can't handle her weapon properly, always has to rely on Soul in order to survive critical situations. Soul: Can't fight by himself as a weapon, as Death Scythe he's still a noob. The reason why they could defeat Arachne: She was a witch who relied mainly on insanity. The reason why they were outwilled by Giriko: He's a weapon who relies on physical fighting style, or to put it bluntly, direct attacks. Yeah, it will be very interesting. |

As for Soul, he can't fight alone because he's a lot more accustomed to fighting with Maka. All he needs is training to make use of his own individual powers, and I'm sure he's got plenty of those now that he's a Death Scythe. |

Warning: Long post with a simple, obvious point:
Come to think of it, it seems that there are more than a few weapons other than Soul who don't fight for themselves much or at all, contrary to the pros Justin and Giriko. Soul Eater has transformed just his arm into the scythe's blade to prepare to fight Giriko and to futilely stab Free. At both of these incidences, he and Maka were in the midst of some circumstance which hindered their ability to work together or even get along well. Soul would much rather fight with Maka because it's better for both of them. Soul felt particularly useless when Arachne paralyzed Maka. He wished he was more capable on his own so he could defend Maka in dire situations. The Little Demon offered his help to Soul so Soul could go with Black*Star to help Sid and Azusa on their mission to an Arachnophobia facility (Mifune was there.) It seems that Soul intends to never use the black blood to make himself a stronger fighter as just a weapon. He and the Little Demon planned ahead of time to use Soul's piano against Giriko. This suggests Soul has a good handle on the black blood for now. Death Scythe has been shown partially transformed. Being able to fight on your own probably isn't very important to him when he's Shinigami-sama's choice weapon and he has other powerful meisters around him like Stein. He may have been doing some sort of training just in case he's caught without a meister, but I doubt that would be important. Seems like he's mostly been sticking to business matters until his current trip with Marie, Stein, Tezca, and Enrique. Azusa, also a death scythe hasn't shown any combat-related individual abilities. She was a pretty cool mission coordinator and super-scribe during the Witch's Research arc. Marie could deliver a powerful punch to Justin by transforming part of her fist into part of her weapon form. That was just for personal satisfaction and the real fight started when Stein used her. Giriko operates alone and only alone, apart from the use of his golem. Therefore, he is very skilled at fighting solo. Justin also works only on his own with the exception of his recent collaboration with the Clown. My point is that only the weapons that usually work alone are apt at working solo. Soul could still have a few surprises in store as a death scythe. I'm looking forward to it.

If you think it's an awesome way to finish an arc you should have thought the same with the spoilers, because the raw is only a extended version of it. |
