Episode 5 3rd part.... it's really telling how a segment that manages to tell a story without dialogue is the most heartwarming and poignant of them all, and the way the story ended was
And LOL, found this: Quote:

Everybody loves Squid Girl. How can you not love Squid Girl?
When I come here after watching an episode, I find that everything I felt and wanted to say has already been said. This show is so simple and straightforward that everybody gets it. There's no mystery or anything to figure out. It's all on the surface, and yet it stays fresh and interesting. It's adorable and yet not cliched or saccharine. She's unbelievably cute and bloodthirsty at the same time. Quote:

The first part seemed kinda average. Although average for this show has come to mean really good. The second part was great. A whole new environment, lots of new things to misunderstand. She jumps the principal, takes over the school, Eiko kicks her in the head and drags her out. Priceless. But please don't start sending her to school every week! She's too special for that. The third part was just stunning. What an inspiration and executed so well! A complete and moving story told in just a few minutes. No dialog, but the music and seiyuu work were phenomenal. Warmth, humor, and pathos. Like a Chaplin flick.

Looking at the preview of next week's episodes, I should've known it was coming since the beginning. Nohmen Rider has been in the opening the whole time, and for him to get his own short...like I said, throw something vaguely toku-like at the screen, and I'll pay attention to it.

As much as I loved that third sequence - which is lots - lets not call it unique. The summer's best comedy, Mitsudomoe, did a great dialogue-free Chaplinesque sketch in episode 10.
That was just a great episode all around, but they've pretty much all been great. The dialogue free skit was the best - really genuinely moving and funny at the same time. I loved the way Ika was discovered - a nod to Ponyo. I also loved the fact that Ika was at the siblings house watching Eiko get ready to "cosplay" - after last week I thought she might be permanently staying there now, though that's not clear. Looks like she'll be attending Takeru's school, though. And while the first part was the most conventional, rather than cliched I think it was spoofing cliches, and effectively at that. Ika is certainly garnering a lot of attention from possessive admirers. Ika is a marvel - Galactic, Mini or Standard, she's the engine that drives all this. Yes, I admit it, she's moe - but her combo of denseness, megalomania, and playfulness is irresistible. As Bonta-kun said this is a bit of a fine line - that much cuteness could be cloying, and if the show mocked her too harshly it would feel mean-spirited. And like Mitsudomoe, this show strikes a perfect balance in the tone of its humor. It's edgy and acerbic, but there's a clear affection for all the characters - especially Ika.

This last episode clearly established that at the end of it all, despite how difficult it may be to give such a series an acceptable resolution, that Ika Musume will blow everything else this season out of the water (though I'm personally struggling between deciding which series I love more this season: Ika Musume or Fortune Arterial since MM! and OreImo aren't doing to well right now).
That third part was gold, definitely shows what potential Ika Musume has if it ever explored parts of other genres. Ika Musume is definitely going to be a personal favourite at the end of this whole season. =) Also, despite being a Shana and Index fan, their -tan parodies were only really funny the first time; while Shana-tan developed itself humor somewhat in the later OVAs, it personally stopped being genuinely funny when Index-tan decided to give it a shot. It died there, personally. =/

I...I...ngh- OH GOD MY HEART ITS TOO MUCH.
I was not ready for such an overdose of pure, uncut, adorable cuteness. THEY NEED TO PUT A WARNING ON THAT SEGMENT. I won't say it's the greatest thing ever, nor even the greatest show this season. What I will say though is that Ika Musume is definitely fitting the slot for simple, cute fun; what its aiming to be, it's achieving it well. Whenever I need an easygoing fix, I can just tune into here. |

Honestly...with that episode...episode 5...it would have deserved (for me) a sub-forum of its own. XD
Damn...that Little Ika was soo cute that I can't even help but say kawaii to it. (It's kawaii power is more than 9000!!) Greatest ep this season! (2nd is MM!! 5th ep)

I don't generally comment on shows but ep5 made me more angry than just about any episode of an anime in a while. Say what you will about the segment itself, but I turn to this show for lighthearted humor and that part wasn't lighthearted or funny in the slightest. The phrase "out of place" doesn't fully capture what a bad idea this was.
Even without the misplaced ending to the segment, mini ika just doesn't work. Normal Ika works because, despite all the abuse she gets, she's not defenseless and she's a "person". Mini-ika being a pet seems like a bad call in the context of the abuse her full size counterpart gets every episode. Making her of sub-vocal intelligence is almost insulting. If segments like this become a regular fixture, I can't see watching this show any longer. I don't need heavy downers in my gag show.
