Shinji didn't happen. Shu honestly deserves all the shit treatment that he gets, even if most of it is facepalm-worthy and unfair. He gets some credit for not thinking about going after the pen right after that big shock though (hooray for more unnecessary misunderstandings and melodrama), although he'd have a hard time getting it back in any case as Ayase probably didn't have it on her. And it's kind of sad that the only decent character in the show is a cripple, makes me wonder if that's intentional .
Orbital death rays were not invented in this show, and are certainly more feasible than drawing weapons from people based on their "soul" or whatever, so they get a pass for that one. Interestingly enough they play this card so early on, normally you'd expect this to happen towards the end. Makes me wonder what kind of other nasty surprises GHQ has in store for later on, and whether GHQ will even survive that long. Maybe they're a stand-in for the real last boss, wouldn't be the first time that anime played that card either. |

Episode 5:
- That white long haired guy with the scar on his face wears the most impractically designed glasses ever. I bet the scars come from the glasses repeatedly scratching his face while sleeping on the bus. - There sure is a lot of books in the Funeral Parlor's lair. Nothing says "rebellion" like old dusty books sitting on old dusty bookshelves, a contrast to the cold, futuristic and austere multitouch interfaces that GHQ surrounds themselves with. I find this set-up a bit cliched, but whatever. - "What's your name?" "Ouma Shu." "I know that." To be honest, I'd be pretty pissed off too if I was in Shu's place. I mean, what wit is of a even lower form than irony? - Aww...very little of clown guy this episode. He redeemed himself a little in my eyes with his remark that cages stimulates him. Evil clowns gotta have weird fetishes. - And as expected, Inori had nothing. Gai came to this poor child at her most emotionally vulnerable state, and bestow her with a name, gave her hope, gave her purpose. And now she will follow Gai to the ends of the earth! Rinse and repeat story for Ayase, Tsugumi, Scarred Impractical Glasses guy, and all the other vulnerable child soldiers that make up this Chuunibyou society. - I like the scene where everyone applauds Shu after he made it to the shelter. I can hear it: "Congratulations!" "Omedeto!" "Omedeto!" - The final test should've been an unarmed Shu versus Ayase in her wheelchair. "Beat me in a brawl". My money would've been on Ayase then. - Kido Kenji looks like a little brat. But I suppose he's smarter than he looks. I wonder if he's a mass murderer at all. - I'm calling it now: When Shu extracts Ayase's void, the music playing will be "Renai Circulation".

I thought it was obvious after this episode. It's a target beacon for the orbital laser. Although it is a bit silly that it seems like he didn't lie about how it worked. If he had some brains so would it (also) be remotely activated or after a set time start to work like a bug.

Honestly though, who says they haven't? I honestly have no idea what is going on in this show or what the motivations are.

RIP, crater girl. You took a wrong turn at Sora no Woto.
Five episodes in, and Inori just got a lot more interesting. While it's impossible to buy that she feels nothing for Shu, I can't say I'm surprised that the way she was acting in episode 3 was Gai's idea. She was too familiar with him, too smitten considering that they didn't know each other very well. Counter-intuitively, I actually like her more as a character if she was (under orders) manipulating his feelings, rather than just being a codependent doormat with cleavage. Spoiler for Here's a wild guess theory:
Ayase is a decent character, and she probably got the most focus this episode of the secondary cast. She's pretty much exactly what you'd expect, but she seemed to soften to Shu pretty quickly, considering her misgivings at first. I think the practical side of her realizes what Shu brings to the table, especially after the test. It was a good idea to have her take the pen away from Shu when his relationship with Funeral Parlor and especially Inori was at its most contentious. By the time it's returned by Ayase, she looks a bit too much like a comrade for Shu to want to use it. As an aside, I got a little giddy when I saw the uber satellite of doomy death. You don't put something like that in orbit unless sometime down the line, someone is going to rend it in two with a giant effing sword. And it will be glorious. |

Thoughts on ep 5: Shu had his world come crashing down after Inori flat out rejected him lol and told him that what she said was essentially fake and used to manipulate him. He's jealous of Gai for being a strong, handsome, charismatic, and having Inori. I hope he starts to man up, I'm tired of his emo "I suck at life" attitude. Wasn't impressed at all when he had to resort to using his god mode weapon pulling trick to pass the test, but I guess you use the gift you're given. Ayase is the only likable character in this series for me, it's too bad her crush is wasted on Gai, who will probably never reciprocate her feelings. |

Great episode for getting to know Ayase better. Went from being the ace pilot/Gai fangirl to someone deeper. Funny it was her actions that helped Shu try so hard and fit in. While they got off to a rough foot (once again Shu's inability to say things in a pleasing manner coming into play) but by the end there was some nice respect there. Think seeing Shu like that after the whole Inori thing helped her feel some sympathy for him and reach out more.
You can bet if Shu had that pen they'd all have been dead after that Inori incident. Utterly painful to find out it really was all just a trick. I was hoping not, but unfortunately it was all a cunning move via Gai. Give something for Shu to lean on. Then once he's in it doesn't really matter since he has nowhere to go. Though if the weapons are based on bonds then they could be in trouble since his faith in Inori is shattered. On Inori more interesting things going on. The whole thing with the blood makes you wonder what is up. As expected there is something about Inori being similar in appearance to the girl in Shu's flashback. I'm really leaning on clone at this point. Anyways if Gai goes missing for a while it could get messy. Kenji seems like the type to make things complicated, Ayase will be unstable, and really everyone will be a bit crazy. Geeze how is Shu's void powers supposed to do anything against that ?

Another thing about the trust issue this episode. It has been a roller coaster for Shu these few episodes. He has been betrayed by so many people. Just the past episode, he asked Inori if it was ok to trust her. It seemed like she was the only one he can trust, but in the end, she also lied to him as well. I would not know how I would recover from this.
