Maybe it is because Gravity is still fresh in my mind that I feel can really appreciate all these hard sci-fi elements to the action; the space drifiting, the line of no return, the difficulty of acceleration and navigation in space. It helps to give Sidonia that hook apart from the rest of its sci-fi ilk this season.

I'm kinda expecting a twist to the known gauna/human history. They've been drifting for centuries and very few people know what really went on back then. |

It really is something to behold just how much thought has been put into the setting - and it helps with the whole creepy suspense of it. It's a lot easier to feel in suspense about something which feels almost like it could be real than something which doesn't.

This is Sidonia's equivalent of the 'stranded on an island' trope that's so prevalent in Gundam shows isn't it?
Really great episode overall. They made the survival scenes really interesting we got some nice Hoshijiro development out of it. The urine filtration scene was GLORIOUS. The 256 Gardes link was visually impressive as well. |

lol I hope the knowledge that the Gardes' lubricant could be filtered for water comes in handy another time.
By far the best episode of the show. Bottle episodes are my personal delicacy especially because they're a veritable trove of interesting character development. The episode just stops short of letting the stranded duo go insane from the immediate lack of rations (which is slightly disappointing) but I believe the episode was never aiming for that. The show had been building up the subtext between Tanikaze and Hoshijiro for a couple of episodes so it's not surprising that it soon found a way to lock em up in a coop where no one could possibly interfere. The twain share a lot of interesting tidbits about their past and their motivations, although Tanikaze sleeps through Hoshijiro's most interesting revelation about Gaun, that they might be a bunch of misunderstood aliens that are just trying to befriend humanity. It could also explain why the Gauna sometimes appear to mimic humans. I hope this new romantic development doesn't raise any death flags for Hoshijiro because the show loves to revel in tragedy (albeit much less than AoT). I actually wish they'd saved the important exposition about the alien tetrahedral Swiss cheese for the next episode and dedicated the entire episode to whatever was happening within the claustrophobic confines of the cockpit because it was a little distracting. The odd conversation that the bear and the commander were having definitely felt random and out of place (I wonder if it's just some chick wearing a bear suit). Anyway, I'm a lot more invested in the show than I was an episode ago. At this point, even the prior complaints I had about the CG have disappeared and has been replaced with awe for the beautiful solemn moments shared within the cockpit that were made possible by the CG. |

You can basically imagine it as all the pilots going on strike in protest of not turning around to rescue their "hero". |

Favorite episode of all anime I've watched for the past 2 years in terms of overall satisfactions. Perfect execution in terms of directing and no cliffhanger at the end or other BS. So good that I can't resist coming here to rave about it.
Love, LOVE Aya Suzaki's voice in this as both Mako and Tamako are a bit too high pitched for my preference (coincidentally, Kayanon is the exact opposite as she could use some more high pitch ones like Daishouri-tan from Oreshura instead). Izana's also probably my favorite Aki role from recent memory as well, even Momose from before was amazing (who would've guessed she's the baby kid from Papakiki). I don't know if Iwanami was involved in the casting selection (probably was), but I'm going to say he is critical for the success of this series as he did great with the sound effects also (A+ the entire way). In fact, the entire series so far has been great acoustic pleasure. As 1/10th of a "sakuga-fag", I'd prefer hand-drawn but was never against 3D. The angle rotation during the parallel flow scene was done probably with much less effort yet with the same great effect, not to mention the last part that clearly show the advantage of 3D for this. Either way tl;dr, Hoshijiro(星汁) is truly the bestest. PS: Loved that little bit of extra with Nagate sucking on that tube; it's always the little things that count. |

Very well done episode for the 'lost in space' feel. Had me hooked even if it was fairly predictable that at least one of them survives. I should have seen the photosynthesis scene coming, but I think they did a great job of making it feel realistic and not JUST for service.
I do have a few nitpicks about the realism, though .. I still don't get the 'lets interlock and go together'. How would this be any faster or more efficient? What ... there's no tether for spacewalking? No way they just jump out of their frame into space without tethering. It's even more ridiculous after all the emphasis on emergency tethering when on the station/mother ship. If the lubricant had high water content, you'd think the survival guide would mention that and they'd be trained to do what they did ... but maybe it has a 50-50 chance of ruining the filter or something *shrugs* It certainly would have ruined the suspense if they hadn't waited till the last minute, but it didn't feel very realistic. |

The anime showed Nagate propelling himself towards Hoshijiro. NASA astronauts wears something functionally similar on their backs when they go on spacewalks, which are called SAFERs (which stands for Simplified Aid for EVA Rescue). The following information is taken from NASA website: SAFER uses small jet thrusters to let an astronaut move around in space. If an astronaut were to become untethered and float away, SAFER would help him or her fly back to the spacecraft. Astronauts control SAFER with a small joystick, like on a video game. |

Interesting, where the star from which they receive light? Judging by the story they are in deep space, far from any planetary systems, but the luminous density like from the Sun at the Earth's orbit.

Great episode once again. I've always like those "stranded in space" episodes, and Sidonia executed it perfectly. This led to a lot of romantic development, as expected. Hoshijiro is a nice girl and would be a good match for Nagate, but my personal favorite is still Izana. I hope she'll be able to make up for lost time later.
This episode also provided plenty of very interesting information. We learned that the Earth was destroyed 1100 years ago and that 500 seed ships including Sidonia managed to escape. Sidonia only found out the means to kill the Gaunas 600 hundred years ago, when they came across an alien structure. Captain, Lala and Ochiai (don't know who that is) were part of the expedition that explored this structure, and are therefore more than 6 centuries old. Nagate's grandpa was most likely there too. I assume this is the reason Captain wears a mask, she doesn't want people to learn she's immortal. I'm sure she's hiding a lot of other secrets. Now we know the reason why they have so few Kabizashi: they didn't make them, they found them. They apparently haven't been able to replicate the main component, the Kabi. They didn't tell us when the last contact with another ship was. This could have given us an indication of whether there are sill some out there, or if Sidonia is the last one.

Yeah, me too. I thought Hoshijiro was just gonna be a friend, but it seems she'll be paired up with Nagate. The stranded-and-rescue scene reminds me of a similar scene in the original Macross. It is as though Knights of Sidonia writer wanted to pay homage to the Macross scene. Spoiler for Similarities between Macross and Knights of Sidonia:
