Considering they have manage to incorporate photosynthesis into human genome, i wouldn't be surprised if they manage to repair/extend telomere (which governs anti-aging in human dna) in some way. Since aging is still prevalent among regular people, it's probably kept confidential and limited to upper echelon of the society.
Plus, the immortal council is encased in some sort of machine which i assume to prevent dna damage and provide life support.

Yes, I'm totally hooked. Excellently done, at the levels of both the larger story and the human interactions.
I thought they should have had some kind of tether when they were mooning around in space. Any little bump can send you careening out into emptiness, I believe. The nude fanservice worked by being both attractive and not in-your-face. I don't really get urination fanservice, but this at least had a rationale and was a fascinating solution to their problem. However, somehow I think the light of distant stars would not be adequate for much photosynthesis. Photosynthesis was developed only 100 years ago (revealed in ep2 classroom). The Sidonia left Earth a thousand years ago, and the alien structures were found 600 years ago, with the captain, the Bear, Ochiai, and probably Nagate's grandfather involved at that time. Whether photosynthesis can be retrofitted into adults, I don't know. Granddad and Nagate are the only ones we can be fairly certain did not have it, but possibly all the people who were around 600 years before didn't. I expect that the bear was created by genetic engineering, like all the identical pink-haired girls. Since she is for all intents and purposes a human (in a different form), I think she would be easy enough to get used to. Her fuzzy face, and the captain's mask, both obfuscate the fact that they don't really age. My question might be why Nagate's grandfather died -- or perhaps what the lifespan of these long-lived characters might be. Are the vat-men commanders/officials from the origin of the Sidonia? Speculation only, please, no spoilers from the manga. In ep2, Izana says s/he can breed with either male or female, that his/her body changes when s/he decides who to breed with. So I expect s/he has some version of both genders' physiology, at least in a vestigial form that can grow when s/he decides. And I agree with Kunagisa that Suzaki Aya is very effective here as Hoshijiro. I disliked Tamako Market so much that I couldn't give her a fair hearing there. And Izana so far may be the most I've ever enjoyed Toyosaki Aki's voice. She's giving us some subtlety, it seems to me.

The conversation the captain had with Lala gave off the vibe that something happened from their expedition which resulted in individual afflictions(captain's immortality, Lala becoming a bearwoman, Ochiai ??). That's the idea I'm sticking with until further evidence supports otherwise.

Common sense and mutiny aren't mutually exclusive. If they're going to go out and search for Nagate, send a smaller team to do it and leave the main force at home defending the ship. They didn't even use their greater numbers to split up and search a wider area. What they did was facepalm stupid, and there's no way not one of those 250 pilots had the intelligence to say "Hey guys, maybe we should, I don't know, leave some guys behind to protect the last remnants of humanity?" At the end of the day it's clear the author chose to have the 250 go together for the wow-factor not caring for the fact that anyone with common sense, let alone supposed trained military personnel, would do something this stupid.

-There wasn't any danger anymore, Gaunas dosn't pop from dark matter, but from asteroids and other space objects and are big enough to be observed long before it reach Sidonia. They would be twice back before getting to danger zone.
- They needed large amount of Gardes, because all way to Nagate and back require great amount of fuel. - They didn't need spread because Nagate Garde was sending out distress signal they went straight for him. |

That's why they usually use the Quad formation. Now in order to get to Kunate who has passed the line of no return, this "256-formation" is necessary. |

The formation is a bit questionable. Since they're in space, it's a vacuum and there's really no drag. So while there's an increase in overall momentum of the mech formation, it does nothing to increase its velocity. However, since they do pick up 2 people and 1 mech, the additional mass has less of an impact on the decrease of velocity because its mass contribution is merely 1/256 or 1+ however many mechs there were. The math is rather blurred, since it would be pretty boring to talk about it in detail, so I'm just going to assume that calculations were made and that it was only possible to perform the rescue mission with that many mechs.
It IS a sci-fi show with humanoid robots fighting giant aliens. While we're searching for life forms in other planets by looking for sign of water in real life, the anime has motherfucking Aliens speeding off in space with shooting of laser beams from what seems to me like a male genitalia. Some logic is meant to be discarded for the suspension of disbelief to occur. |

Think about it this way, everything on a Gardes is powered by the Higgs Boson. When it's a single Gardes, a certain amount of power is needed to perform things like navigation, diagnostics, communication, etc. However, when you link the Gardes, you can network the processors so that the load is shared. Some of the essential processes that are required for a Gardes can be disabled as not every unit needs them to be running. This would free up an additional amount of Higgs Boson that can then be used to boost the maximum range. Although I do believe there's an in-universe explanation for why linking increases the speed. I don't remember if they cut it from the anime or it's coming up. |

One word...fanservice!!! We got us some fanservice with this one. lol Who would've thought photosynthesis could be done like that?
I have to admit though, the survival thing was pretty well thought out. Classic survival technique that involves drinking urine when there's no available source of water. It wasn't pointless, nor was it used as some form of twisted fanservice/fetish. It was justified & logical. (The embarrassment was also understood. I wonder though, did he even realize he drank her urine?) Did she say six centuries? She looks damn fine for a six hundred yr old grandma.

If there was a bear running my cafeteria, I wouldn't ask. I would just accept, peacefully. Zen-like.
Also, this is the first romance subplot I've seen that involves one party drinking the other's urine, so well done, Knights of Sidonia. Well done.
