More and more harem series get romantic undertones, or even overtones.
And one of the earliest, and in my opinion, greatest, harem series, Tenchi Muyo, actually canonically (by word of god) ended with a "marry them all" solution. But complaining that something is not harem series because there is no romance, is not really justified. Now, if nobody is romantically interested in anyone, then, yes, it is not a harem. But so far any series where 3 or more persons, of any gender, are romantically (or just sexually)interested in the same person, is justified in calling itself (or being called), a harem. You're not gonna get very far if you're arguing DM doesn't fit under harem. It's not going to be retroactively excluded in a few years either. What wug's describing is literally never a problem unless you're trawling for porn.

No, well it is a bit wexing I have to say. It makes finding real harem novels quite hard. If I am looking for a novel, where there are multiple girls having romantic feelings for the MC and the MC reciprocates their feelings (whether there is a physical relationship or not), what am I to look under? This is how I would define harem, but it is a truth that fanclub is often labeled as harem too...

(I'm sure there are exceptions of course so please don't assume I bashing something you happen to like) There are a few problems I think with "real harems". 1) A real harem results in more concrete relationships which have to be maintained. This means a larger amount of time needs to be spent on "harem management" and less time towards plot, action, etc. 2) A real harem turns the main character from someone "dense", "indecisive" or "aloof" to someone who "plays around". 3) A real harem devalues the female characters in it. - a) There's a big difference between a female character expressing interest/love towards the main character, and actually sleeping with him - b) Any female character in the harem is going to have to accept the fact that either the main character is cheating on them, or being willing to accept other women in the same relationship. While there are definitely character archtypes where this would work, there are plenty of other archtypes where it wouldn't. A harem contains all stores of this female characters, however, a real harem is going to have to amend all of these characters with a +AcceptsCheating or +AcceptsMultipleRelationships trait. - c) With any harem, while the first one or two female characters might take a while to "capture", after that they tend to drop like flys. With a normal harem is fine for them to be in a random scene here and there. With a real harem, it would be pretty bad if he slept with them and didn't pay much attention to them afterwards. (FYI: I'm not talking about Death March here. Most of the main female character have been decently developed, however if this was a real harem he would have slept with him before this point) One real harem series that I like is Long Live Summons. It can work because the main character is entirely shameless, not just in regards to making a harem but an utterly shameless person in every way. All the female characters are aware of this and often get mad at him about it but and it's something that they are going to have to somehow accept before they actually get into a relationship with him. (Well at the moment, he hasn't actually slept with any of the girls so technically it's just a normal harem, perhaps once it transitions into a real harem I'll start to dislike it?) |

^So if Death March becomes real harem you'll hate it instead?
Well because at this point there are too many girls in the harem, it's kinda impossible for it to become real harem anyway If the number of haremettes is limited, it won't degrade the plot and characters too much imho Like Oyaji Terrorist, the number is limited to 5 girls + 1 robot (though MC is cheating with other girls too(snusnu)) Satou's real harem should be just Arisa, Aze, Hikaru, Zena, and Karina.
