Except this time, the director obviously wanted something that is not restricted to broadcast censors. |

Who knows, it might not officially be hentai. I mean, Futari Ecchi isn't listed as such, nor is Canvas, though neither has BTs that I know about. It isn't considered legitimate hentai unless you can see exactly whats going on down south. A stupid technicality, but one that most anime databases agree with. For instance, in a 2-ep OVA called Canvas~Motif of Sepia~, the story seems normal until the very end of each ep. In ep1, at the end, the main girl starts fantasizing about the main guy late at night, when she's home alone, and while certain things are rather obvious, the camera and sheets are always positioned just right. Canvas is as close to hentai as you can get, yet most places I've seen still refer to it only as ecchi. I guess well find out in April.

(Note how close the 'camera' is set, so that it barely cuts off the privates?) Even if it was a dream scene, the stuff involved is technically sex right? |

You guys who are wondering if this is ero or not, you guys can [partially] thank Mr. Douglas MacArthur, the SCAP (Supreme Commander of the Allied Forces of the Pacific) who was the head of the GHQ (General Headquarters) during the Allied (US) Occupation of Japan from 1945-1955. It was he (and his associates) who drafted the current Japanese Constitution and later, the Japanese Criminal Code (most notable in this case is "Article 175") which proclaimed (somewhat) in the form similar to the one written below:
A. Any depiction of gentalia of men or women without "proper censor" is illegal (actually, it is more like: "depiction of pubic hair and genitalia is illegal") B. Depictions "Properly censored" genitalia is legal pornography C. If no genitalia is shown, it is not pornography Before WWII, Japan was fairly open to depiction of genitalia (as seen from Edo-period ukiyo-e, brothel parlor pictures) in art form. For some reason, the people at the GHQ thought this to be disgusting (if Edo-period nudity was considered to be "offensive" I wonder what they would've thought about Italian Renaissance sculptures?) Therefore, a loop-hole exists in this case between B & C: A. It isn't illegal and "is not pornography" if you can depict sex WITHOUT showing genitalia at all. So while "Futari Ecchi" and "GREEN GREEN THIRTEEN" CAN be considered to be ero (porn, hentai, or whatever you guys want to call it), technically, it isn't by law as: "they are depicting sex WITHOUT showing genitalia." You can read how much of a headache this Article 175 of the Japanese Penal Code clause can cause in contradicting with Article 21 (freedom of speech and expression) of the Japanese Constitution by reading these articles: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/low/world/as...ic/3391951.stm http://www.studioproteus.com/mangasex.html Last edited by kj1980; 2004-01-29 at 18:11. |
