Anime figure news?
I haven't been into the internet world of anime for very long, but I'm wondering if there is a good site that has anime figure news - like upcoming statues, PVC figures, etc as well as just general figure news.
Is there such a site? |

Funny enough, ANN just started up a new article series about that very subject:

^ Go to the HobbyHype Forums. If you're particularly interested in Action Figures/Figurines, go to its Toy Land section. I hear it has the latest news on upcoming figures; I'm sure it'll be what you want.

READ OR DIE Yomiko Readman ("ThePaper") Sculpted by Hiroshi Inagaki Craftsmanship Kotobukiya 1/8 Pre-painted First, a disclaimer: I have not watched R.O.D., well, at least not yet; since I do intend to. This is the first figure I've bought that comes from a series I have not watched. So you'll forgive me if I make any booboos in ignorance, they are certainly not intended. But what made me buy it then? I don't know, she's just my kind of girl XD . (all pictures here are under 20 KB in size, and clickable images give you larger versions. Mods/Admins, as always, please let me know if you want any removed) Upon walking into the shop it was the box that literally first caught my attention (it helped that it was on main display ). It was quite unique in that it had its own character, so to speak, that set it apart from the generic "window" boxes around it. It may not be so obvious from the pictures, but the box was designed to be somewhat like an aged, almost arcane, tome; with its "hard embossed cover" (in appearance), title spine, and its right side fashioned as leaves of paper in a book. And I liked that. So that made me pick it up. Upon opening the pretentious cover an even more impressive sight awaited, ThePaper, herself, surrounded by a colourful mural of bookshelves - it really caught my eye. See for yourselves. Spoiler:
Note too the hole that seems to be burned out of the cover; through which one can see the papers she's holding in her left-hand; I'm sure there's some meaning in that apparent only to those who've watched it. The Figure ^ Her pose is definitely interesting; with a one-legged leaning stance. Although from some angles, it does look as if she's lost her balance and is falling over. However, from the delightful dress contortions (mmm creases), the way her hair flows, the papers at her feet and her one-leg stance, one can certainly appreciate that she is in some kind of a vortex; buffeted at by winds, yet ably riding them. Cool. ^ Detail to her clothes is admirable. Coat cuffs, pockets and collar are nicely coloured. Those pockets bulge realistically out from the coat. The white of her sleeves peek out of the coat cuffs. Buttons that pop up from her blouse and jacket are rendered in, so are the button holes. They also made an effort to separate the fringe of her coat from the rest of it; going so far as to give it it's own sense of movement. Why, even her tie is a separate piece! Sadly, it still isn't perfect; with a rather huge scar on the coat collar, and I wish the edges (say, under her left breast) were smoother. Nonetheless, colour and what shading there is seem to be spot on. Also, and I'm sorry, but I can't help it: squish . See inside the spoiler for more of her clothes. (No panty shots this time. I tried, oh I tried, but the darn flash couldn’t go where it was supposed to. ) Spoiler:
The Face... ...is Love. A shy, somewhat reserved and modest, smile dwells on her face; and I love the way her ears peek out from under her hair, and that cute bump of a nose. The deep blue of her eyes were perfectly painted in four colours (including the shading). Framed by her glasses, which have plastic lens, they are fantastic. Period. Unfortunately, as evident in the picture, the rims have a slightly off-coloured appearance, but that is presumably the result of the plastic lens they hold. In anycase, the spectacles are removable, and they've even included an additional 3 extra pairs incase the original gets damaged. From the front, her dark blue, almost black hair looks perfect, and it is. However, it’s a much different story at the back, which brings me to the main gripe of this figurine. Spoiler:
Apparently, the hair was pieced together in sections, and just left with the most blatant seam lines in place. It also has some scars. This was extremely disappointing; I was shocked when I spotted them – alone, it is quite enough to mar an otherwise good Figurine, from my POV. Meh. Other Features ^ The books she lovingly carries. Squish. ^ The base with papers in a rising arc is amazing, but let it not distract you from the fact that with only one slender (though admittedly beautifully shaped) leg supporting the rest of the figure... Well, I am going to have to hope that this Figure doesn’t tip over. (Hmm, apparently Yomiko can control any paper she touches; so that explains the base, which btw, is exclusive to this PVC release. i.e. It wasnt available on the original resin and coldcast versions.) Overall This was a figure that disappointed somewhat; at least, I was expecting a lot more from it; for a figure that cost me SGD 65. Still, where it does have its faults, it more than makes up for them in the detail paid to this figure. What most impresses me with this figure is the realistic rendering of cloth, hair and papers billowing in the wind; which contribute to it being such a dynamic and eye-catching figure. Should you buy it? Each person must decide if the features they've seen on this Figurine can, for them, outweigh its apparent faults, and justify the rather high cost (Japanese retail price 4800 yen). To be honest, the faults I spoke of above are less visible if the figure is well-positioned facing front; and almost invisible if you one doesn't look close enough. From there then, it just boils down to how much you cherish the character this figurine portrays. Last edited by Lost; 2007-02-15 at 04:02. |

I frequent this site a lot it has pics of upcoming stuff and more importantly it shows actual pics of figures etc to show you what they look like in person not those fancy protype models.

Personally i don't prefer one company over the other. I just buy what i feel good looking, outwardly.
---- Looking for a decent deal for this PVC. Any help would be appreciated. It's a discontinued item. The cheapest i've found it so far is $48.00 USD. Ringetsu - Ayumi Hizuki 1/8 PVC Figure. Sexy isn't it ^_^.

Just got this today after it's launched in Japan early this year. Been waiting for it for so long.
Here's some pics of it. The box. Some images taken at work today. Hehe, beside the new 22" LCD monitor, just recently launched. And the lightweight piano black series notebook. Without further ado, the out-of-box pics... The clockwise views of Motoko. Close-ups. The firearm. The ammo pouch. The holster. The display plate. Her face. Aerial view. Link to hobbylink japan on product description: http://www.hlj.com/product/ALP88029 In brief... - This figure is quite light for it's height and size. - The company that produces it is rumoured to have shutdown it's operations. - Apart from HLJ, this figure is sold out mostly. - The detailing, shading, are very well done. - Although, most collectors have found the colour of the hair to be too light, I find that it's just nice. Anyway, this is the figure that I really don't mind splurging on. It's got all the details of the of Major from the TV series GitS:SAC 2nd GiG. The only thing lacking now is probably a tachikoma in the same scale and the rest of section 9. I wonder if another company might do up Batou as a 1/7 figure? |

I actually just picked up this figure of Mayu Tokura by Solid Theater; the URL from 1999.co.jp seems to be selling the limited edition version (black sweater with white skirt). I haven't opened the box yet - mainly because I got one of these - but overall, it's quite good. The skirt's quality has a couple of ticks against it - a small blemish of a gray color, and the black hem's edge isn't as sharp - but not much wrong with it, I think. I usually get resin models now - and picked up loads from the recent Wonder Festival - but this Mayu figure, so far, looks to be a keeper.
