No. You mistake shokugeki, a mock-up-word, for a generic food duel, which it is not.

"Shokugeki" is a duel recognized by the school between two participants, who have agreed on condition of their price. It is initiated by the participants.
It is a specific form of battle, and NOT a generic word.

This here is nothing but the school's official tournament match for the Fall Festival cooking contest.

The only "Shokugeki" we've seen Souma fight in the series is vs Nikumi and vs Shinomiya (unofficial duel).
vs Takumi was not one, and neither are any of the tournament matches.

I had been wondering about this. It is about the overrated Tootsuki school.

Are those students actually study in that school? So far, I don't remember that Soma and other students ever attending a class for a cooking lesson. How are those students going to improve if there is no teacher actually teaches the student the art of cooking? Self-study? That is BS, ya know.

All I can remember was those students were given a random task, and force to complete it or else, get E rank and kicked out from that school.

If that so, what is the point going to that SCHOOL if those students are not going learn anything from the TEACHER? It is completely understandable for those students if they didn't learn anything from the instructors if that SCHOOL part got renamed to ARENA or BATTLEFIELD or something appropriate.

Or I just have to believe that they do attend a class off-screen?

Ummm...even in the army camp, there is an instructor to guides the trainee. I guess before you enroll into that BS school, you need to have a very strong foundation as base?

It does seem like, at least from the impression we readers get, that the school is not actually a place to learn, but to cherry-pick the best. Like a 3 year long test to find the gem, not to cultivate them.

actually it depends. I remember some of them studyng chymics or something like that in the start(it was just a panel or two and without any of the main characters) .I think you can study with a teacher in clubs if you find one who wants to teach.Or you can get equipment and teaching materials that would be hard to get otherwise.

So basically if you don't have a father like Jouichirou, didn't learned much in middle school part, born without talent or doesn't have any experience in cooking. You're fucked when you're in high school.

By the way, can school like this get away with not teaching the normal stuff? I can understand an emphasis on cooking, but neglecting science maths etc seems overkill.

I don't know how private schools work for this matter, but let's just say that the establishment they attend isn't categorized as a state of the art "high school" but a specialist training "call it whatever you want" institution. Taking this into account, as long as you clearly distinguish yourself from being a "high school" you can teach whatever you want.

Or to circumvent any possible arguments, you can just say that this is how it works in this manga, as it has no need to relate to the actual japanese educational system.
