No preview?
Though they couldn't use the original previews because the numbers would be off (so to speak) because Kyon always overwrote Haruhi's numbering pattern.
Except Melancholy I and II aired back to back originally so it would be no issue.
Also, this was the DVD version so it definitely is not HD.

They did, but they were listed as episodes 2 and 3 respectively by Kyon.

I believe some extra animation was sprinkled throughout the DVD release.

But the episode number Haruhi gave would now be the actual episode number based on airing order. I guess the episode number Kyon gave would be confusing if you didn't already know what it meant.

So yeah, it's Melancholy after all?

...What? Uh...

I'm actually surprised that they didn't air Ep 00 first... does this mean that they'll be airing Sighs later instead, and felt that both would be too much...?

I don't even know anymore.

There should have been two new scenes in this episode, if that's the case. One with Kyon arguing with T&K, and one with Kyon musing over the rules for making a club in the student handbook.

See above. There was also a scene with Mikuru fangirling over Koizumi, and a scene in Mysterique Sign where Kyon wonders who he really is... it's fairly interesting.

They also fixed some animation and consistency issues. Kyon now brings his bag to the clubroom, for example.

I can't quite remember all of them, but one of the first ones had Mikuru get up and fall over when Koizumi is first introduced (I think).

I think it's just chron. order, but we'll find out after Boredom if it is (since, after Boredom, Bamboo Leaf Rhapsody is supposed to take place)

I don't remember the fangirling, but I definitley remember the Kyon speech (mostly cause of the music)

Even in Chronological Order, Ep. 00 is first, as it's mostly a setup episode.

No, in chron. order, 00 is the eleventh episode.

No, official chron. order, the DVD broadcast order, 00 is still first.

Hence the joke in the original preview for Live Alive.

"Next up is Episode 11!"

On my German website I have a Trivia section where showed some screenshots of the new scene that was introduced in "The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya III". It starts with Kyon and Itsuki handshaking and ends with as small speech by Haruhi.

http://www.sos-brigade.de/wordpress/?p=187

The part on the page starts with "Für die DVD Veröffentlichung".

Yes, and Mikuru seems to be quite attracted to Itsuki in this scene. The scene is ~45 seconds long.

But I don't have screenshots of other scenes from other episodes.

No, it's 11th in the official "order in which things actually happen" order. I mean, the thing takes place the morning after Haruhi and Kyon stayed after school and stayed up (well, Kyon did) all night editing the movie. In it, all the charactors already know each other, the SOS Brigade is already formed, and the School Festivel is going to take place in a couple hours, with the actual festivel taking place on the 12th episode. Since there are no events that take place between that morning and the festivel itself, that makes 00 the 11th episode, chonologically. DVD orders have nothing to do with when an event takes place.

Hmm, maybe we should drop the subject...

I mean that it's intended to be viewed as the first episode, not that it actually takes place first.

Interestingly, Live Alive could easily have been an ending to a chronologically aired, 12-episode season, if Ep 00 was first. This way it basically comes full-circle, and Live Alive's ending is perfect for the series as a whole, I think.

Of course, Day of Sagittarius is fantastic, so I'm glad they didn't do that after all.

Good point on both accounts. Hearing Haruhi call to launch the Gun$%ams was worth sacrificing any perfect chronological ending.

There's quite a fair bit of things added in the Haruhi DVD versions.

Those I can recall:

- More lines between Kyon, Taniguhi and Kunikida, particularly to the incident 3 years ago.
- Kyon rambling a bit more after Asakura appointed him as Haruhi's messenger.
- Kyon and Haruhi with more lines as they visit Asakura's house.
- Itsuki properly introducing himself to the SOS-dan.
- Kyon with more lines as he comes home after the "cricket" incident.
- Kyon with more lines after the "cosplay cafe" scene.

There's also fixes in scenes, particularly the whereabouts of Kyon's bag etc.
