Awa, I didn't thought Hase would sink that low, that dialogue there almost seems like Hase just gave up on Fujimiya fully. That is why the next chapter is Hase trying to cheer himself by bringing Shougo to a karoke to sing out his sadness.

Can't blame Hase; he thought he was moving forward gradually, but now seems it's not the case. Meanwhile new guy has "history" with Fujimiya and has the power to affect her so greatly.

Normal guy would have run off by now.

So chapter 18 is that "crepe" scene in episode 10, instead of Fujimiya running away, Hase was able to save Fujimiya in time and bring her back to school where she thanks Hase for standing up for her.

This is my opinion but I think the anime handled the scene better than the manga. While the anime didn't handle Kujo's little chat with Fujimiya or Hase saving her but I still think it was able to illustrate the drama better. But that is just an opinion..so it just which one you prefer. The manga did a good job in exploring Kujo and Fujimiya and anime did a good job in presenting the drama. Both of them were able to convey the same answer about Fujimiya.

Ch 19 is available, and for some reason this ch made me feel pained, that is, in the sense of really hoping things would work out for Hase (and Kaori, of course)....

Yeah, he has shortcomings and the like, but he really is a dedicated person.
