Afghan Memo #6 - Glitzy
Throughout pakistan, extravagantly decorated buses and trucks abound, and have even become a tourist attraction. To describe it in a word, "glitzy". They over-decorate their vehicles with a vengance. Some hardcore decorators will spend upwards of 10,000 dollars a year to dress up their vehicles. //TL note: see here for examples of this: http://www.pakistanphotos.co.uk/pakphotos/ |

Afghan Memo #7 -Carrots
Carrots, members of the parsley family, originated in Afghanistan. These original Afghan carrots were spread via the silk road, and eventually separated into two main varieties: long and narrow eastern carrots, and the shorter and thicker western carrots. In modern day Japan mainly the easily grown western varieties are cultivated, however in Afghanistan various types of carrots are still grown. |

Afghan Memo #8 - The Kashmir Problem Kashmir is located at the norwestern tip of the Indian subcontinent, adjoining Afghanistan and China as well. It was once a protectorate monarchy under the British. At the time of the 1947 separation of India and Pakistan, the kingdom was given the choice whether to accede to India or Pakistan. The Maharaja of Kashmir was a Hindu, so he declared his intention to join India, however the majority of the population were muslims, and wanting to join with Pakistan they started an uprising. Due to military intervention from both sides, this conflict evetually escalated to to become the first Indo-Pakistani War. |

Afghan Memo #9 - The Kashmir Problem Pt. 2
There were three Indo-Pakistani Wars fought over the course of the years, but all of them ended with a victory for India against the impoverished Pakistan. In order to strengthen its economy, Pakistan began supporting to stabilize Afghanistan's government in order to secure a better trade route [from Central Asia] to the East. However, India began obstructing Pakistan's motives by supporting Afghanistan's anti-government opposition. Hence, the civil wars within Afghanistan became a side-front for Indo-Pakistani clashes which further impoverishing Afghanistan's economy. The Kashmir conflict still remains a hot-spot between Indo-Pakistani relations to this date. Afghan Memo #10 - Pro-Communist Government As Britain's strength in the world decreased following two major world wars, the Soviet Union (formally established in 1922) became acquiring major influence around Asia. The Communist influence spread to Afghanistan, in which the pro-communist forces deposed the monarchy and established the Republic of Afghanistan in 1973. However, corruption within the government lead to a military coup d'etat in 1978. The new government further strengthened its alliance with the Soviet Union and they renamed their country to the Democratic Republic of Afghanistan. Afghan Memo #11 - The Mujahedeen When pro-communist People's Democratic Party of Afghanistan gained control of the government in 1973, they immediately declared all other political parties to be illegal and began cracking down on Islamic insurgents. As of this, many began to seek refuge into neighboring Pakistan. These Islamic fighters who named themselves the "Mujahedeen" (Arabic for "holy warrior") obtained military support from Pakistan and the U.S. With the supplies and support they received, they launched guerilla insurgencies against the pro-communist Afghani government and the Soviet Union. |
