How do you know if it has nothing to do with the storyline? It hasn't come out. For all we know, it could be a better adaptation of the first story arc than the anime.

I think if did right, the movie could be okay. And trust me, if the characters looked the same, they would look utterly ridiculus. Irie looks pretty great actually.

I don't think making a movie of this is a good idea. Getting across the plot in the time frame allowed by a movie is impossible and while Onikakushi-hen was an excellent start to the series, I'm not sure people unfamiliar with the story can swallow its ending with nothing to follow.

I mean, K1 goes nuts and kills his friends and then himself. Hints at a grand conspiracy are there, but nothing is revealed. THE END. The collective "WTF!?" will be heard in China.

The other arcs on the other hand are probably a bit too much for someone not familiar with the series.

I too think it's too early to judge. Onikakushi-hen is pretty self-contained and when the original game had come out, there was a 6 month period during which people had been left in the dark. Admittedly, people might be disappointed by the fact that there's no real resolution, but there's really no other way to make a Higurashi movie.

Besides, assuming it isn't terrible, it might help popularize the games, manga or anime.

Maybe they'd make it an action movie.

I think that would work quite well; I'd watch it.

Rika: Hey, Takano, remember when I said I would kill you last?
Takano: That's right, Rika! You did!
Rika: I lied.

I don't want to dismiss the movie as a suck-fest, but I'll keep my expectations really, really low for this one. Maybe, I'll make that conclusion when I see it.

Having seen the trash that is the Negima live-action, I wish that the ones who cooked this live-action concept for Higurashi won't follow suit.

I don't expect the movie to be totally faithful to the original, but I'm at least hoping that they make it decent. Heck, I have a knack for Asian horror films, and since Onikakushi-hen feels more of a horror, then maybe, it could work.

Well it wouldn't bear much resembelence to any actual english villages (most "pagan" cults are actually fairly recent, what with over a thousand years of christianity converting most of the local competition. It's just that maypoles, harvest celebrations, much of the traditional christmas imagery and what have you were either co-opted by the church or else became meaningless ritual.) so unless you wanted to completely change the nature of Hinamizawa syndrome you'd have to find some way of Christianising the local faith, make it a really obscure denomination with plenty of pagan inspiration and have the Oyashiro-sama analogue be patron saint or somesuch. Interesting idea but it would end up being so wildly different from the source that you'd be best up writing an original concept with a few inspirations.

I think it would be okay for it not to be a full-fledged cult, but just a local superstition, with maybe a few hardcore believers. Rika's family wouldn't need to be a line of priests, for example, and there could be a festival like Watanagashi without it being a cult. There are just lots of things in European tradition which are hold overs from older traditions, and they co-exist pretty peacefully alongside modern faith. I think the idea of Oyashiro-sama turned into a patron saint would be a pretty cool idea, though. And there could be a conflict between some, is it a saint, is it a demon, etc. I think it could work without being too drastically different, though personally, I think any attempt to remake Higurashi from another cultural perspective would require to fully rewrite the story just in order for it to actually be good and stand on its own feet.

I'm usually not pessimist or criticizing before actually watching the said thing but...
What did they have done to Ooishi !? Even TMA pr0n parody was much more convincing...
Tomitake is as "good" as TMA's...

now for the girls... short hair rika is still a "shocku", but no need to comment on Mion and Rena i guess... (kaii? nein...)
