Well good effort to make a decent episode out of pairing up two characters I really don't care about. Neither Takeo's groupies nor Yamato's friends have really been all that interesting outside of just being "their friends", so pairing two members of those groups together didn't appeal that much to me.
Still, they made a good effort of it and had some solid moments near the end. I just don't expect to care that much about that relationship going forward.

Ep 17

But I must admit that I was giggling throughout the ep before Christmas Eve and then cringing during Christmas Eve itself...man, talk about awkward on both of their parts. Well, it all worked out, I guess.

What kind of establishment encourages patrons to endanger everyone's health and safety like that?
This is the chapter that I thought wouldn't get adapted, because it's just so... superfluous? I mean it's mostly cute and mostly harmless, and I guess any break from the Takeo/Rinko saccharine for something more realistic is good, and it's nice to show that people aside of Takeo and Rinko have actual lives as well, but... this is not my type of story. That aside it was charming in a facepalm-y "oh, teenagers" way, although I wish the writer (well, the manga) didn't go for the cliché "bad guys approach the girls who are unable to handle the situation without a man's help" drama... |

On a completely unrelated note I demand a crossover where Rinko and Souma have a patissérie-themed shokugeki .

When Nanako got mad at him for not stepping up and "being a man" like Takeo put it. I just laughed and told my sister "because clearly this guy likes living". Speaking of which why is it the guy that needs to be a man, if Nanako wanted to date him so much she could have just asked. It would have been funny if she got so annoyed at him for beating around the bush that she climbs the tree, gets the star herself and throws it at him before coming back down in a huff and angrily asking him if he wants to go out. He's so shocked he just says yes, the end. With that said I am enjoying and laughing at how silly this all is.

Yeah, this show makes no attempt to hide its celebration of traditional masculinity. Don't get me wrong. Takeo is not some dumb meathead jock. He's a stupidly sweet, kind, and honest individual...like the whole main cast. But he also represents the alpha male. And maybe that's the writer's vision of the ideal man: the kind-hearted qualities along with all the direct "save the girls" macho junk; the whole package rolled into one. It's interesting...

Ep 18
Please excuse me while I desperately try to recover from the sugar rush of that episode! Just ... incredibly adorable. (Though the cheesecake looked so rich it would cause instant death.) The scene of Sunakawa asking if he had kissed before and the animated traumatized response followed by his reading Dostoevsky absolutely made me roar with laughter. Also ... I and others have said it before, but Takeo's parents are awesome. XD The end of the ep was simply too adorable though ... man. I melted into a puddle. -_-

“...Since the invention of the kiss, there have only been five kisses that were rated the most passionate, the most pure. This one left them all behind.”
Also, that just might have been the cutest version of Happy Birthday I've ever heard. |
