Well, he probably couldn't predict how Butler would react. His first aim was to deprove Gabriel of Butler's support.
If Rose were to lose against Richard he could still have Butler tattle Gabriel out.
If Rose were to win, Gabriel would still remain without Butler's support whom, we were told, was higly beneficial to him as it's Butler who has all the connections and blackmailing material to work in City 23.

Like Gabriel, Butler likely took precautions that, if someone were to try and put him down, his death would have consequences.

Butler was also one who didn't like to stain his own hands personally. He always used Primavera or others for the dirty work so Meiju might have thought he could 'volunteer' for it.

Instead Butler saw the opportunity to use Richard and was so set on it that when Richard failed he didn't hesitate even a moment in taking the matter in his hands... though you might say he still used Richard to hide his own role.

Honestly it's a pity we didn't see what happened afterward. I'm curious about Meiju's reaction to Gabriel's death but I'll be also interested in knowing if Butler figured out Meiju's role.

After all Gabriel's guard was definitely too low and he acted definitely too unaware of what he had done when normally he liked to brag. Meiju is relatively safe as the last Butler knew is that Alan worked for Primavera, so he shouldn't connect the fact he told him he had a sister to Meiju... but Butler might have been informed Alan switched sides (he was a wanted man for Primavera) and that he was connected to Meiju and not to Rose back then when he tried to save him.

While I don't think he'll regret killing Gabriel this would make for interesting American/Chinese relations with Primavera in the middle... and weren't American/Chinese relations already delicate enough due to politics?

Definitely I'll love a sidestory about it but I fear we won't get it...

Too bad. Jeanne didn't even mention how her relationship with Americans and Chinese went on after she became the madam...

I still have trouble imagining that Meijiu would sacrifice completely innocent people just for the sake of his vengeance… that's certainly not something Meixue would have approved at least (but then again she didn't really approve anything of what he did…)

And I'm also skeptical about his sheer ability to pull that off… was the Golden Dragon so powerful that they extended even to the US? Cause Ange wasn't in Japan during the story…

Still, I really hoped there was some kind of secret epilogue hidden somewhere in the game, but it looks it's definitely not the case. I want to kidnap Ryūkishi and ask him what happened afterwards, damnit! This ending is too unfinished.

By no means Meijiu did it for sake of Revenge. What he did was for sake of the GDS. Everyone realized how terrifying Gabriel is and even if he could patch up their relationship with Primavera, there was absolutely nothing that would guarantee that Gabriel wouldn't pull another plot in there.

The whole point was to either prove GDS innocence in this affair or eliminate Gabriel.

Gotta Agree with Klashikari here. If Meiju wanted revenge he would have acted like Richard, but he didn't. To eliminate Gabriel was important, he couldn't be left alive, he was too dangerous. I don't think Butler had any regret about killing Gabriel but he didn't enjoyed it either.
I think he's the character that gets the worse of all the whole thing.
Actually I would love to see some kind of spin off of what happened after the last fight with certain characters.
Like Keith was left alone again (No Stella, No Yuuji, no Richard, no Alan...) Meiju lost all his Family (Meixue died and Alan too) And Philip lost his dignity and his sister.

Going by Meixue's comment and her real name in the credits, I would assume she's an illegitimate child of their family that Meijiu adopted back, but that's only my theory.

Undoubtely Meixue wouldn't have approved but Meiju had done many other things she wouldn't approve.
There's to say though that Meixue didn't want a war to break down and Meiju might believe she would accept him murdering an innocent if this would help avoiding it... as if it was the lesser of the evil.

But Ange's murder is clearly not out of vegeance as Meiju couldn't know what Butler would have done, apart from guessing he'll stop being loyal to Gabriel and, if he could have his way, Meiju wanted to be the one to painfully kill Gabriel. No, Ange's death is purposely to free Butler from his 'loyalty' to Gabriel.

Meiju though is not above killing people for his own ends. In Ep 1 he wanted to kill Wayne and Claudia because they could be used to blackmail Rose. While Wayne wasn't a little angel the most Claudia had done was being a lady of the night and shielding Rose.

Gabriel is TROUBLE in all capital letters. Not only he's wants all the mafia members death and he's doing his best to put Primavera against the GDS but through blackmailing he's also in control of the American forces in city 23.

He kept impressively quiet during 1950, which sort of surprised me, but it probably was because he was waiting for a massive war between Primavera and the GDS to explode. If this were to fail surely, if let on his own, given the chance he would again come up with another plan to get rid of them all.

It's no more a matter of personal vegeance, it's survival. Gabriel has wealth, strength and charisma, he's trusted by Primavera and he has the support of some of the old Chinese faction.

As for killing Ange... I don't want to think at it but if Ange was killed with the same Chinese poison that killed Yuuji (of which Butler knows the effects, that would clearly point his sister didn't die of natural death and that he would immediately connect to Gabriel) all they had to do was to drug her coffee or send her a box of poisoned chocolate or something.
The poison is Chinese after all so Meiju can easily get some and ask someone else to deliver it to Ange.
In short Ange's murder could have been performed pretty easily by one single person. And Meiju had enough time to send someone in America or, even better, to contact someone who was already there for this.

Interesting enough, rechecking I've noticed that when Alan went to save Butler, not only his words implied he didn't come there due to Primavera's orders but he also mentioned that the GDS would be willing to grant Butler a luxury life, which could be seen as an implication Alan had connections with them.

So yes, if Butler were to think at the incident over and over he could very well realize that Gabriel was innocent and that the other group who had the interest, the possibilities and the knowledge to target Ange was the GDS.

Oh and it'll be interesting to know what happened to Keith. Alan seems to be death (that is or he's in coma... but well, since there's not another episode I'll assume he's dead) and Keith wasn't psychologically very stable and he's definitely an enemy of the GDS, refusing to accept they're innocent.

Though since Hsiao-Lan was there she might have taken advantage of Keith mouring/calling Alan to kill him.

Hum... I don't remember much about Hsiao-Lan's backstory as I didn't really like ep 2 and forgot most of it.

I don't really want to admit it, but hat's probably what happened. Ange got killed in a way that would make Philip think it was gabriel, and the thing happened. But jblue got a point in there too. Alan spoke of the GDS while trying to rescue Butler, so you could connect the dots in there.

If Hsiao Lan was an orphan adopted by Meijiu,it's just natural for her to inherit the same family name as Meijiu...And also you can say she is Meijiu's family.

I think Keith either commited suicide or be killed by the GDS.After all,Meijiu wasn't be able to murder Gabriel by his own hands because Bultler did it one step ahead,so perhaps executing the man who is directly responsible for his sister's death would help to quell the anger in his heart.

Well, I think who Wayne's wife is, is probably not relevant. Likely he met a girl, fell in love and married her. For all we know it might have even been Zel or Nina or someone unknown.

Though if he instead married Merryl... well, I would have been interested in knowing it... though I doubt it.
But well, his grandson holds two weapons at the same time, same as Merryl... so one can wonder if it's a conicidence or it was done on purpose :P

The trick is that although Butler killed Gabriel, people believed Gabriel was killed by Richard, who fell on the ground but wasn't dead yet and therefore managed to shoot him. Butler, whom we were told is pretty good in this sort of things, was careful to use Richard's gun while Richard was still holding it in his hand.

Also Gabriel was hated by almost everyone. Even if someone were to suspect Butler did it, it's more likely that Butler will receive unofficial thank you and presents than that he'll be investigated.

Both Butler and Gabriel could blackmail the higher up but Butler was definitely more useful and pleasant to deal than Gabriel, and if left on his own didn't pose any form of threat nor caused troubles, actually he avoided them.

If an investigation were to come up they would probably hurry with it and hush it as soon as possible, pushing all the blame on Richard, who's conveniently dead, Japanese and a mafia guy.

The worse that can happen to Butler is for them to consider transferring him.

As for Keith, well, of all the GDS only Hsiao-Lan was present and I think for her it'll be easier to kill him taking advantage of how Keith is distressed than to bring him to Meiju alive.

Meiju didn't really have a grudge against Richard and Keith, he knew they had been manipulated by Gabriel, so while he might want Keith dead I don't think he'll be too obsessed with killing him himself.

Still, really, Rose Guns Days sort of overlooked the fate of everyone who wasn't Rose, Leo, Wayne or Jeanne.
We don't know what happened to Meryl, to Claudia, to Alfred, to Tequila, to Butler, to the GDS, to Meiju, to Hsiao-Lan, to Sun Tzulung, to Zel, to Nina, to Charles, to Keith and we aren't even confirmed if Alan is dead (though I think so).

I'm not really interested in the fate of some of them and I can sort of assume that it went on the same as before but in some other cases it feels as if things were ended abruptly and they got completely forgotten without reason.

Hey, when I'm playing Rose Guns Days, I notice that some of the music that plays is played in a lower pitch. For example, the music that plays in the title screen when the Last Season is unlocked. The music is called "a-symmetry". And that music piece "peace-eases" which plays when Yuki first appears in Season 3. Is there a way to fix this?

so I'm giving this VN a go now... Thanks for the translation! Excellent quality as with Umineko. Since you seem to be in good terms with the author, have you thought about acquiring a license to sell a full-fledged English release?

I'm perhaps half way into season one, and I have kinda mixed feelings. I like the evocative alternate history setting, the soundtrack, and the art style...even the characters are okay. But the writing, not so much. I think Ryukishi's best writing was the psychological horror stuff. The drama in RGD is kinda tacky and it feels overly long-winded. But maybe it'll get better once it's done with the introductions and world-building.

Also why do Butler's fingers have extra joints?

The Alfred arc is the weakest part of the story by far. It generally improves as it goes on − although some parts are better than others and Rose is a bit annoying in Season 1.

Butler is drawn by Jirou Suzuki, that may be why.

Last chapter feels rushed and many characters virtually dissapear from the scene like the Wandering Dogs, Hsiao-Lan, Keith, Meryl etc after doing a bit of cool stuff like if they were cheap movie extras on a battle scene.

Heck we dont even know Jeanne first years since they skip just to the present so we dont even know if the remaining multiracial problem was solved in the end

One thing was to not have to explain every trick related to a mistery like he did on Umineko, but hell we would like to know what happened to everyone that is not Wayne, Leo or Rose after all that. We can guess clearly what happened with characters like Caleb, Amanda Claudia or even Alfred, but other younger characters really go shafted with such abrupt cut that Jeanne does on his narration
