Wait, they're selling a 24 episode series over 12 volumes? Wow. That's a rip off.

That's how they recoup the production cost of an anime. The makers have to pay the TV stations for a slot to show it on TV (usually really late at night) and earn profits through the sales of expensive DVDs. But then the otakus are willing to fork out the money anyways.

?

I thought that the studios worked for the television networks.

From my understanding anime studios are independent companies that produce the anime, then pays the TV stations to broadcast them. I'm not sure if the TV stations themselves produce their own anime series (which I doubt).

I remember reading a post about the anime industry, probably posted by kj1980, but I can't seem to find the exact post. Basically, unless it's a popular mainstream series (Gundam, Naruto, etc), sponsors hardly cover the production cost. The anime studios have to rely on the sales of the DVDs and merchandise to stay afloat.

Anyways, this is going off topic.

yes, but that is in japan. shows that air in the US receive lots of money to air on TV from the broadcasters. and JP companies get HUGE dollars for those licensing fees.

I was just remembering places like Williams Street and the G4 headquarters... stations like CN and G4 do have their own studios, and they're financially backed by their parent companies.
