I have to agree with the person who questions why Ami was introduced into the story right now. Her initial purpose in the story was to flirt with Ryuuji to make Taiga jealous but after that she just kinda flaps around as if she's just there because the author knows she's popular with her audience. I really liked her through most of the series (She's the only person who says what we're all thinking about Kitamura.) up until she started turning on characters that didn't deserve it.

I don't think Ami is nearly as popular in Japan as she is over here, but I don't know for certain.
Ami fills her role as the catalyst throughout the whole story. Or at least tries to, but no one listens to her. And there's the Greek Chorus thing that I mentioned. She comments on the plot and plot developments, but she gets a little too involved and comes out worse for the wear herself. |

I can relate to Ami, we went through the same thing when I was in high school.......
Everybody thought it was a weird thing when I get between the vending machine and just chill there till lunch was over...... :P I love this ep, Taiga is becoming such a lovable character to me that I even named my kitten Taiga!! http://img177.imageshack.us/img177/1...4customsh6.jpg Loved it when Ryugi saw Taiga since the incident....so warming. |

Indeed, eh? I really don't see where the complaint is... trying to act natural around the girl who said she loved you but doesn't know that you heard her? Trying to bring it up when you're still conflicted with your feelings for another girl? Heck, just imagine trying to bring it up at all. Like, how do you start that conversation? "Oh, you know that stuff you said to Kitamura while you were still half conscious? Well, actually, that was me! Surprised, right? Hey, why are you fainting..."

For myself, episode 19 sealed the deal between Taiga and Ryuuji. Its only a matter of time since Ryuuji knows how Taiga feels now from the end of episode 21. As for everyone else, its up in the air at the moment.

A bit of a tangent but this word popped up this episode as a pun in the ramen scene as well as... episode 18 I think.
I have a definition for "ikemen" ("イケメン (n) cool guy, good-looking, energetic men") but, you know, that's a dictionary definition. I was kind of curious if anyone knows what this means, like (pop) culturally, and for that matter where the heck the word came from ("men" is obvious... but "ike"?). I'm kind of thinking I might open up the subtitle scripts and just replace the relevant translations with "ikemen"... in both cases CoalGuys took the opportunity to make a bit of a self-referential joke instead of more directly translating it... and it makes the ramen pun work, in any case.

I no longer see the point in prolonging this inevitable relationship. It has been clear for episodes now that both characters like each other, if they want to pace this show well and not drag on emotions, next episode is the perfect episode to start breaking the water for Taiga and Ryuji.
Anyhow, I rated this episode as good (7/10), it was a good transition episode. I expect problems to rise with Ryuji's life as we start to learn about his true interests in life. Though Taiga seems to be lonely in life, it is Ryuji who truly seems to be lonely. You can see it in the scene where he is shedding tears because Taiga is in his house. At first I was quite impartial to this RyujixTaiga relationship due to my attachment to Minorin, but because I have tossed aside any disappointment and have started to look at this show from the standpoint of seeing this relationship develop, I have actually started to warm up a lot to this couple. Unlike many shows (Canvas2 is the most blatant example to me), Toradora does not jump the shark with the character emotions at all. It is very consistent and develops their characters incredibly well. I have been quite pleased to find this because I do not get to see this too often in any anime I watch these days, well of this genre. I will be excited to continue this show to the end, my expectations are seemingly a little higher than I would like, but hopefully they will be met.
