Okay so I wanted to know if you guys know any kind of japanese animated series which don't use the conventional anime style (big eyes etc...).Something either more realistic or just quirky.

Are you specifically just talking about art then? Character design usually has little to do with how "realistic" an anime series is. It usually just shows how much money the studio had to work with.

Hm.... I wouldnt consider it "anime" in that case. I almost want to point to all "cartoons".

Well, it's still anime, as it's japanese animation. But the style is what changes.

The ONLY series I have seen go around the normal big-eyed-odd-eyelashes type was Sento Yousei Yukikaze. IMO, it has a bit of Aeon Flux to it, though they're completely unrelated.

This is going to sound bizarre, but Haibane Renmei has some of the most realistic looking characters I've seen. If they didn't have wings, they could pass for ordinary humans (rather than anime humans).

If you mean the character art, then I like that sort of stuff, you might want to try... (simply based only on Character Art, not the story - though some stuff there is awesome, like Planetes and Wings of Rean.)

I'm talking how close to a realistic depiction of human face and body is concerned.It doens't mean tho that said characters can have wings and such.Basically I'm just asking for cartoons with a non-anime feel to their art.Nothing to do with the credibility of the depicted world per se.

OK, then take Popolocrois out of that list.　

Instead you can try Yomigaeru Sora -Rescue Wings-.

I also second Yukikaze and Haibane Renmei.

Oh yes Monster. The women are so ugly. :P

There's also Gankutsuou. With the weird colors and Renaissance art, it sure doesn't feel like your typical anime. Of course, the characters look refined too; you wouldn't find cliche eyes, hairstyles etc.

Also.. Victorian Romance Emma. The people look just like those from the Victorian era, if you will.

I don't know why, but Paradise Kiss doesn't look to me like a typical anime look. They try to give it a real-life feeling, and I think they do it very well.

I know more manga not-manga than anime, though.If you're interested as well...
