Slice of life, no monsters, no action, anime suggestions plz!

Recently got (back) into Anime, having just seen "Full metal panic 2nd Season", "5cm per second", "I can hear the sea". I quite like this kind of thing, where, mostly speaking there is no sci-fi, no fantasy, no action, and just like a soap opera really, but in anime, so it's easier to watch and follow.

Any suggestions of similar stuff?

Your request is kind of vague due to there being a difference between realistic anime (No action/Sci-fi) and Slice-Of-Life (typical everyday life). Anyways i'll post some of my suggestions for more realistic anime, and seperate out Slice-Of-Life.

Comedy
Full Metal Panic? Fumoffu
School rumble (all seasons)
Toradora! (Could be romance/drama)

Romance / Drama
Kimi ga Nozomu Eien
Myself ; Yourself
Hanbun no Tsuki ga Noboru Sora
Clannad (both seasons, first season heavier on harem and comedy, second season more drama. you must watch season 1 first before season two, mild sci-fi)
Kanon (Mild sci-fi)

Slice of Life
Minami-Ke (Also could be Comedy)
K-On (Also could be comedy)
Suzuka (Romance/Drama)

Cross Game

That is what you want to watch. Cross Game

Other (older) greats in that type of category would be Maison Ikkoku, Kimagure Orange Road, and Touch. I especially liked Maison Ikkoku.

You also might like Tokyo Magnitude 8.0, Ai Yori Aoshi, and Sora No Manimani.

Aria is one of the best examples of Slice of Life genre, but it's sort of a sci-fi. However, you barely notice the futuristic things while watching it.

Thanks for the suggestions, I've seen Hanbun no Tsuki go etc (Half moon) a few months ago, I forgot to mention it in the OP. Yer, that was really good, but also kind of sad.

I just checked out Clannad and Kanon as per your suggestion. I think Clannad is the better of the two series, so I will be watching that now. Kanon is too much of a 1 boy x n girls kind of thing, although you mention Clannad is like that too... ... but at least it's slightly more realistic.

I've never played baseball before, and don't know the game at all, so I'm not sure about Cross game. I wonder if Japanese people would watch an English show about Cricket... (I live in the UK.)

As for Maison Ikkoku sounds quite interesting, but where can I go to find old anime like this?

Lots of Aria fans out there it seems, I'll keep an eye out for it.

I had never played baseball and knew nothing about the game before watchiing Cross Game as well. I recommend you at least try out the first few episodes.

Well, you don't have to understand American Football to enjoy Rudy, similarly you don't need to know much about baseball to enjoy Cross Game. Being a baseball fan improves it somewhat, but if the show was about Cricket instead (and I know nothing about cricket except that it involves a deformed bat), I know I'd still be watching it.

Maison Ikkoku is licensed so I suppose you could either buy the DVDs (you wouldn't regret it- but get the subtitles not the dub), or I suppose you could rent it at some video store- if there's an anime specialty video store- I'd think there would be.

*Looks around surreptitiously* There is also a fansub on youtube... I am of course suggesting this only as a means of sampling the merchandise before purchase- and not watching all 96 episodes.

NANA
Bokura Ga Ita

ARIA is practically the dictionary definition of slice of life these days. Before that it was Yokohama Shopping Log, which is another great slice of life series. Both of them have some "sci-fi" levels, but they both kind of take place in a futuristic society which loves a retro look and field, so they balance each other out.

Other than that, Sketchbook ~Full Colors~ is another good option. Cross Game is an excellent option among the running series, whether you know about baseball or not. You'll pick up the things you need on the run, so don't worry.

Cross Game. Post haste. Like right now and 5 minutes ago.

Honey & Clover, though it gets sort of angsty sometimes. In a similar vein, Nodame Cantabile.

You might want to check out NieA 7. There are sci-fi elements to it, but like Aria, that isn't the main focus of the show at all.

I recommend Aria. best show man has created with his hands. Also, Special A deserves a mention.

Well, you can try watching Tokimeki Memorial - Only Love. That's a nice anime with romance.

Kamichu! (big yes)
Natsume Yuujinchou
xxxholic (while it's not exactly slice of life, it follows it somewhat and there's some sweet moments)

Not sure on the first one, but the rest.. are you absolutely sure Natsume or xxxHolic are NOT fantasy and are realistic ? Think again.

Anyway, I'll second Lucky Star and Clannad which you already checked out. I also recommend Kanon 2006 as suggested previously. Although it's more Fantasyish, it has great nice story, and Im sure you will enjoy it. ( Plus, it's not harem or anything really. .. )

Tokimeki Memorial was really weird with the comedy but it was enjoyable too.

And LS will be more enjoyable if you've seen alot anime, as you will get more of the references. However, LS was the first anime I ever saw and it was enjoyable for me nevertheless.. In fact, since I enjoyed it I seeked for more and got addicted to anime in the first place.
