best 'basic' version of photoshop?

i've heard CS is a good one, but i'd like to know, what's the best bare-bones version of photoshop to get? my current comp is pretty sucky, and i'm just going to be using it for image resizing and cleaning-- adding text and maybe a few grey tones.

which of the older versions would you recommend for me?

Photoshop CS3 or earlier should suffice.

Although if you're going to use it simply for resizing, adding text, and such. You might want to try paint.NET instead. Lightweight and easy to use.

thanks a lot.

i was actually using photobucket's online picture editing application, but i feel like it's lowering the resolution when i shrink photos for some reason..also, i'm going to need a program i can plug downloaded fonts into.

Why not just use GIMP ? It's actually free, unlike Photoshop .. Unless you were going to get it by some other means ...

Then instead of spending your money on Photoshop, paint.NET is definitely a choice for you. And like Dist said, GIMP is another good alternative of it.

*cough* User interface could be way better, and tools feel unrefined. It's like hammering a nail with a monkey wrench. Basically, not exactly what you want, but... it kind of works.

Also, 2nd (or 3rd) Paint.NET

There's always GIMPshop

But seriously, if someone dont have an experience with PS, Gimp is fine, the thing is, most peoples that blabbers about GIMP ugly UI is those that are so used with PS own interface.

Learning a new interface is easy, relearning something is what most peoples have problem with.

For an everyday user, you don't need Photoshop unless you are doing webdesign or you are an Art major in College. The free programs will do fine with some minor editing and stuff. You really need the power of Photoshop still, there is a cheaper version of Photoshop called Photoshop Elements. While it doesn't have all the features of Photoshop, it's a good alternative to the full version. The latest version of Elements is 9 and can be obtained for 76.29 off Amazon.

GIMP is just as powerful as older versions of Photoshop, and the UI isn't terrible, but it is completely backwards from Adobe's UI. So if you're used to PS, GIMP will feel fucking awkward as hell.

Not as awesome as CS5 and it's content-aware fill though *grumble grumble*

From my experience with it, I think you're better off just using the free stuff then Elements. I don't remember any particular selling point to it.
